RÉSUMÉ

Dans le ravin du stratotype, les Sédiments de Saint-Pierre sont composés de six lithozones dont trois sont décrites pour la première fois. La microflore et les macrorestes des six lithozones révèlent une végétation à caractère boréal évoquant un climat plus frais que celui d'aujourd'hui. Ceci indique que l'ensemble de l'unité est postérieur à l'optimum climatique du dernier Interglaciaire Sangamonien (stade isotopique 5e). Des spicules d'épongés marines, de la classe des Démosponges, ont été trouvés dans trois des six lithozones. Au stratotype, les Sédiments de Saint-Pierre sont emboîtés, par érosion fluviatile, dans des silts stratifiés grisâtres et sont recouverts par des rythmites supérieures. Ainsi révisés et clairement définis selon les normes du code stratigraphique, les Sédiments de Saint-Pierre atteignent une puissance de 8,25 m. Ils sont emboîtés dans différentes unités quaternaires à l'échelle de la vallée du Saint-Laurent, de Pointe-Fortune à l'ouest jusqu'à l'île aux Coudres à l'est. L'emboîtement des Sédiments de Saint-Pierre dans une unité marine ancienne, à proximité du stratotype, est comparable à celui des sédiments holocenes du Saint-Laurent dans les silts et argiles de la Mer de Champlain. L'emboîtement marque le début d'un cycle sédimentaire représenté par la succession de faciès suivante: fluviatile (Sédiments de Saint-Pierre), lacustre ou glaciolacustre (rythmites et sables), glaciaire (Till de Gentilly), glaciolacustre (argiles à Candona), marin (sédiments de la Mer de Champlain) et lacustre (silts à Lampsilis). Un tel cycle est caractéristique d'une vallée périodiquement englacée puis inondée par enfoncement glacio-isostatique.

ABSTRACT

The St. Pierre Sediments consist of six different lithozones at the stratotype ravine. Organic remains and pollen collected from the six lithozones reveal a boreal vegetation and climatic conditions cooler than today. According to these data, the entire unit of the St. Pierre Sediments is younger than the last Sangamonian climatic optimum (isotopic stage 5e). At the stratotype, the St. Pierre Sediments are inset into stratified grey silts and overlain by upper rhythmites. The St. Pierre Sediments, revised in accordance with the North American Stratigraphie Code, are 8,25 m thick at the type section. The St. Pierre Sediments are inset into several Quaternary units in the St. Lawrence Valley, from Pointe-Fortune in the west to île aux Coudres in the east. The channeling of the St. Pierre Sediments into an older marine unit is similar to the actual fluvial encasing of the St. Lawrence River sediments into the marine sediments of the Champlain Sea. It indicates the beginning of a new sedimentary cycle represented by the following faciès: fluvial (St. Pierre Sediments), lacustrine or glaciolacustrine (rhythmites and sands), glacial (Gentilly Till), glaciolacustrine (Candona clay), marine (Champlain Sea sediments) and lacustrine (Lampsilis silts). Such a sedimentary cycle is characteristic of a periodically englaciated, glacioisostatically depressed and flooded valley.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG

In dem Graben des Stratotypus bestehen die Sedimente von Saint-Pierre aus 6 Lithozonen, von denen drei zum ersten Mal beschrieben werden. Die Mikroflora und die Makroreste der sechs Lithozonen enthullen eine Vegetation nôrdlichen Charakters, welche an ein Kuhleres Klima als das heutige denken Iasst. Dies weist darauf hin, dass die gesamte Einheit auf das klimatische Optimum des letzten sangamonischen Interglazial folgte (5e itosopisches Stadium), Man hat Teile von Meeresschwammskeletten von der Klasse der Demospongiae in drei der sechs Lithozonen gefunden. Bei dem Stratotypus sind die Sedimente von Saint-Pierre durch Flusserosion in leicht grauen geschichteten Schlamm eingefugt und durch hôhere Rythmite bedeckt. Die so nach den Normen des stratigraphischen Kodex ùberprùften und klar definierten Sedimente von Saint-Pierre erreichen eine Stàrke von 8,25 m. Sie sind in verschiedene Quaternàr-Einheiten des Sankt Lorenz-Tals eingefugt, von Pointe-Fortune im Westen bis zur île aux Coudres im Osten. Die Einfùgung der Sedimente von Saint-Pierre in eine alte marine Einheit in der Nàhe des Stratotypus ist derjenigen der Holozàn-Sedimente des Sankt Lorenz im Schlamm und Ton des Meeres von Champlain vergleichbar. Die Einfùgung macht den Beginn eines Sediment-Zyklus deutlich, der sich in der folgenden Fazies-Aufeinanderfolge abzeichnet: Fluss-Candona-Ton), Meeres- (Sedimente vom Meer von Champlain) und Seen-(Lampsilis-Schlamm) Fazies. Ein solcher Zyklus ist charakteristisch fur ein TaI, das periodisch vereist und dann durch glazio-isostatisches Einsenken ùberschwemmt wurde.
