ABSTRACT
The author studies some of the conditions of group formation and reproduction which characterize Trois-Rivières' notables in the last third of the nineteenth century, more particularly by an analysis of their matrimonial relations and kinship networks. The notables are first selected using several sources and their group is briefly described. Their births, marriages and children's marriages are then scrutinized to determine their origins and social positions, and to investigate practices favouring social integration or exclusion. It appears that the notables used restrictive matrimonial practices to preserve, exploit and improve their situation. During the town's emergence as a regional centre, belonging to regional kinship networks helped one to become a notable in Trois-Rivières. However, by the end of the century, new matrimonial links with notables from other towns became more numerous than new links with the surrounding rural areas, while the proportion of local intra-urban links remained stable. This reorganization of kinship networks is perceived as a result of the process of urbanization.
