La genèse d’une communauté canadienne-française en Nouvelle-Angleterre : Lewiston, Maine, 1800-1880

Résumé

Le présent article a pour sujet la genèse d'une communauté canadienne-française en Nouvelle-Angleterre, celle de Lewiston, Maine, avant 1880. L'auteur décrit d'abord la localité à la veille de l'arrivée des premiers Canadiens français en I860, s'attardant plus particulièrement aux bouleversements causés par la Révolution industrielle, qui fit de Lewiston un des plus importants centres textiles des États-Unis. Il explique ensuite la nature des migrations canadiennes-françaises au 19e siècle, et le rôle de premier plan qu'y jouaient la famille et la parenté. De fait, la famille était la cellule de base de la communauté ethnique en formation. L'économie familiale caractérisait les ménages nucléaires et se tissèrent entre ceux-ci et les manufactures de coton des liens étroits et complexes. La parenté aussi avait des fonctions économiques, sociales et psychologiques, facilitant l'adaptation des migrants dans leur nouveau milieu, un milieu où les conditions d'existence étaient très précaires. De cette masse de paysans devenu ouvriers émergea une petite-bourgeoisie composée d'hommes d'affaires, de professionnels et de prêtres. Ces hommes utilisèrent leur pouvoir pour intensifier le sentiment religieux de leurs coreligionnaires et pour tenter d'instiller en eux l'idéologie de la survivance culturelle. Certains prirent leur distance de la masse des migrants, alors que d'autres, le curé et les professionnels notamment, travaillèrent à la création d'un réseau institutionnel centré sur la paroisse, contribuant ainsi thnique sur des fondations solides et à transformer les migrants en immigrants.

Abstract

This article examines the emergence of a French-Canadian community in New England, that of Lewiston, Maine, before 1880. It first describes the area before the arrival of the initial French Canadians in I860, focusing especially on those changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution, which transformed Lewiston into one of the most important centres of textile production in the United States. It proceeds to explain the character of the in-migration in the nineteenth century, and focuses on the central role played by the immediate and extended family. In fact, the family unit was central to the emerging ethnic community. The family economy was founded on the nuclear household, and a closely knit and complex web of relationships was woven among family members and between them and the cotton manufacturers. Family lies also played economic, social, and psychological roles within the community, easing the transition of new arrivals into an often precarious economic situation. From this group of rural-workers-turned- labourers emerged the petite-bourgeoisie of businessmen, professionals, and priests. These men would use their community influence to strengthen the religious sentiments of their fellow Catholics, in an attempt to instill in them the ideology of cultural survival. Some set themselves at a distance from the vast majority of the migrants, whereas others — notably the curé and the professional élite — would work towards the establishment of an institutional support network centred on the parish. This element would help to establish this ethnic group solidly within the roader social framework and would contibute towards the transformation of these French-Canadian migrants into an identifiable immigrant community.
