AB - How were projections, understood as both a tool in the popularization of science and as a device for entertainment, restored and reinvented by the theater of the 19th century? This article analyzes Duboscq’s Catalogue des appareils employés pour la production des phénomènes physiques au théâtre (1877): the variety of screening devices for the stage described here illuminates both the technical transfers between the fields of scientific research and the performing arts, as well as the aesthetic reinvention that allowed the adoption of projections for the theatre.
