This article examines how the pace of technological progress has continued to accelerate the pace at which nostalgia is conjured and commodified. It undertakes a comparative study of sculptures by three contemporary artists, Daniel Arsham (USA, b. 1980), Alicja Kwade (Poland-Germany, b. 1979), and Kathleen Ryan (USA, b. 1984). While these three artists create and theorize in discretely different modes, their intermedial strategies are thematically linked in their shared leveraging of archaeological praxis and geological materiality vis-à-vis the temporal structure of nostalgia. Their sculptures are important case studies to unpack how nostalgia is culturally mobilized in this specific moment of technological acceleration and the resulting ecological perils of this progress.

Cet article propose d’examiner la manière dont le rythme du progrès technologique a accéléré celui de l’évocation et de la marchandisation de la nostalgie. Pour ce faire, nous entreprendrons l’étude comparative d’une sélection de sculptures dues à trois artistes contemporains, les Américains Daniel Arsham (né en 1980) et Kathleen Ryan (née en 1984), ainsi que l’artiste polono-allemande Alicja Kwade (née en 1979). Alors que ces trois artistes ont chacun un processus de création et une lecture théorique de leurs oeuvres bien différenciés, leurs approches sont thématiquement associées par le recours à l’évocation de l’archéologie et de la matérialité géologique, en rapport avec la structure temporelle de la nostalgie. Leurs oeuvres constituent ensemble un cas d’étude important pour comprendre comment la nostalgie est culturellement assimilée par la société moderne, à un moment d’accélération technologique et de péril écologique intrinsèquement lié à cette progression même.

This paper examines the relation between Stranger Things (Netflix, 2016–) and the omnipresence of nostalgic tropes within current mediascapes. Nostalgia for the 1980s is already a well-examined subject within film and media studies, yet there remains much to say about the ties between nostalgia and desire. As with any desire considered from a psychoanalytic standpoint, nostalgia is focused on an impossible object that is conceived in retrospect. After comparing the object of nostalgia with the functioning of the object-cause of desire as it is conceptualized in psychoanalytic thought, this paper argues that the nostalgic desire expressed within the series is situated around the very shift from the analog to the digital. It is argued that nostalgia within Stranger Things emerges from the remediation of analog media and technologies, and that its relation to desire emanates from the very lack that is retrospectively situated at the heart of digital media.

La nostalgie pour les années 1980 est a priori un sujet bien défriché au sein des études cinématographiques et médiatiques; par ailleurs, la relation entre la nostalgie et le désir reste peu abordée. Comme tout désir conçu d’un point de vue psychanalytique, la nostalgie est dirigée vers un objet impossible qui est conçu en rétrospective. Après avoir comparé l’objet de la nostalgie avec l’objet-cause du désir tel qu’il est conceptualisé dans la pensée psychanalytique, cet article soutient que le désir nostalgique qui se dégage de la série se situe dans le passage de l’analogique au numérique. Il est proposé que la nostalgie au sein de Stranger Things émerge de la remédiation des médias et des technologies analogiques, et que sa relation avec le désir émane d’une absence rétrospectivement située au coeur des médias numériques.

Since 1998, French artist Invader has invaded urban space with mosaics representing pixelated aliens originally imported from the 1978 arcade game Space Invaders. Turning retrogaming into a global artistic project through ever-evolving processes of media combination and intermedial reference, Invader brings together a variety of media and artistic traditions (including mosaics, graffiti, pixel art, arcade games, and a geocaching application) that each involve specific technical and affective inscriptions of humans in space and time. This article shows that the nostalgia mobilized across these distinct medial strata and through their hybridization is not only embraced restoratively but reflectively (Boym, 2001). Nostalgia becomes a vehicle for a voyage across the history of Western dwelling from Antiquity to the techno-capitalist megapolis, a voyage through which the artist seeks to redefine what “dwelling” can mean in a post-digital era.

Depuis 1998, l’artiste français Invader envahit l’espace urbain avec des mosaïques représentant de petits extraterrestres de pixels, initialement importés du jeu d’arcade Space Invaders (1978). Élevant le rétrogaming à l’échelle d’un projet artistique global par le jeu des hybridations et des références intermédiales, Invader rassemble une multitude de formes et traditions artistiques (mosaïque, graffiti, pixel art, jeux d’arcade et une application de géocaching) qui chacune engagent des inscriptions techniques et affectives propres aux humains dans l’espace et le temps. Cet article montre que la nostalgie mobilisée à travers ces diverses strates médiales et à travers leur hybridation n’est pas adoptée seulement de manière restauratrice mais aussi réflexive (Boym, 2001). La nostalgie devient le véhicule d’un voyage à travers l’histoire de l’habitation occidentale, de l’Antiquité à la mégalopole technocapitaliste, voyage à travers lequel l’artiste cherche à redéfinir ce qu’« habiter » veut dire à l’ère post-numérique.

L’analyse de la nostalgie du pays d’origine est mise en parallèle avec une interrogation des formes d’habiter mises en scène. Elle permet d’interroger les rapports aux mémoires personnelles et collectives ainsi qu’aux attachements fantasmés au pays d’origine transmis aux enfants, qu’ils soient rejetés ou réappropriés.

This article offers a comparison of the figure of the “home away” in European cinema through two case studies devoted to West is West (De Emmony, 2010) and Almanya: Willkommen in Deutschland (Şamdereli, 2011), two comedies staging the post-migration experience of Anglo-Pakistani and Turkish-German families, respectively, as well as their encounter with the home away after a return trip. The analysis of the nostalgia for the country of origin is placed in parallel with a questioning of different forms of inhabiting. It allows us to question the relationship to personal and collective memories as well as the fantasized attachments to the country of origin transmitted to the children, whether they are rejected or reappropriated.

In the fall of 2010, contemporary artist Kerry Tribe staged a live re-performance of Hollis Frampton’s 1971 structural film Critical Mass, signaling a recent wave of nostalgic returns to cinema’s past in search of alternative technologies, methodologies, and exhibition structures. This essay reads Tribe’s re-performance alongside George Landow’s 1999 parody of Frampton’s original to reconsider a temporal tension between the historical longing of nostalgia and the futurity of intermedial recursivity. Together, these “films” determine a process of spectatorial subject formation proper to cinema’s changing specificity, resulting in a constant tension between the reception and re-performance of cinema as a set of continuous yet distributed desires, as a feeling of nostalgia for an event which has yet to recur.

L’oeuvre initiale (le roman de Bloch) et celles qui suivent, dont le film d’Hitchcock et la série, s’inscrivent dans une suite de modulations qui transforment à la fois la trajectoire du récit, ses personnages principaux et l’univers dans lequel ils évoluent. L’étude qui suit s’inscrit dans un projet exploratoire visant à poser les bases d’une réflexion sur la complexité du parcours fragmenté et ouvert d’une série créée à partir d’un matériel existant dans un autre média et sous une autre forme.

The television series Bates Motel (2013–2017) is a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960), which is adapted from a novel of the same name by Robert Bloch (1959). The present study intends to ascertain the equally fragmented and expanded journey of this TV series that takes its roots from pre-existing works of fiction. With a rhizomatic angle, the article focuses on the many intricate ways an adapted story, its characters, and fictional universe can both shift and create new patterns.

Pour lutter contre la mélancolie familiale et la noirceur de l’Europe en guerre, Salomon monte un théâtre ironique et expressionniste, décale son histoire personnelle vers le rêve et la démesure, au moyen d’un dispositif médiatique unique et d’espaces de sens qui s’entrelacent.

This article aims to reflect on nostalgia and art with the example of Life? or Theater?, a melodrama on paper created by Charlotte Salomon. Between 1940 and 1942, seeking refuge on the Côte d’Azur, the Jewish artist created her colossal artwork during a “nostalgic” creative cycle, reworking her past, diving into her painful personal history and into the beauty of the Mediterranean coastline. Fighting against a deadly melancholy and the somber days of war-torn Europe, Salomon builds herself an ironic and expressionist play, moving her personal story into the realms of dream and excess through a unique device, a particular use of media.

This essay emerges from conversations between an anthropologist and a performance artist from the industrial city of Taranto, in southern Italy—known today to be one of Europe’s most polluted cities due to the continent’s largest and most hazardous steel factory. By focusing on artist Isabella Mongelli’s photographic and theatrical work conducted upon returning to her hometown after years lived abroad, this essay locates the expression of a specific affect coined by Taranto sound artist Alessandra Eramo: la tristezza siderurgica, the sorrow of steel. Tristezza siderurgica yields an ethnographic understanding of the perceptions and representations of homes that have become homely, uncanny, estranged because toxic or otherwise inhospitable. The article shows that the naming of affects contributes to forging specific, perhaps even untranslatable, emotional landscapes. What does it mean to be emotionally laced by the poison of steel? While contemporary texts on the experience of environmental toxicity tend to waver between the material and semiotic/metaphorical as distinct poles, this essay proposes that we braid these oft-polarized terms through the work of ethnography. Through this dialogic process between aesthetics and anthropology, we encounter the ways in which artists have sought to understand ecological crises through a mobilization of the senses, which are crucial for understanding toxicity as it vacillates between visibility and invisibility.

En approchant le travail photographique et théâtral de l’artiste Isabella Mongelli réalisé à son retour dans sa ville natale après avoir vécu des années à l’étranger, cet essai se penche sur l’expression d’une émotion spécifiqueimaginée par l’artiste sonore de Tarente, Alessandra Eramo : la tristezza siderurgica, la tristesse sidérurgique. Cette expression permet d’entrevoir, d’un point de vue ethnographique, de nouvelles perceptions et représentations d’un « chez-soi » devenu étranger, non seulement à cause d’une distanciation nostalgique, mais aussi parce qu’il est matériellement altéré et devenu toxique. L’article tente de montrer que de nommer des affects forge des paysages émotionnels spécifiques, peut-être même intraduisibles. Qu’est-ce cela signifie qu’être émotionnellement contaminé par le poison de l’acier? Alors que les textes contemporains sur l’expérience de la pollution environnementale ont tendance à osciller entre le matériel et le sémiotique / métaphorique en tant que pôles distincts, cet essai propose de tresser ces termes trop souvent polarisés à travers la pratique et l’écoute ethnographique. Passant par un processus dialogique entre esthétique et anthropologie, nous tentons de tracer la manière dont les artistes ont cherché à mobiliser l’expérience du sensible afin de mieux comprendre la crise écologique et les processus matériels du poison qui vacillent constamment entre visibilité et invisibilité.

From the artist’s very first photo-paintings to the most recent abstracts, landscape has been an omnipresent subject in Gerhard Richter’s career that presents a complete openness to different media, especially photography. This article attempts to study these multidisciplinary and intermedial references, the dialogue and mingling of the arts, as well as their contribution to landscape painting. Its purpose is to show not only how Richter integrates other works and characteristics from different arts, but also how works of art earlier in time can be perceived in his landscape depictions. To this end, the study of some representative examples helps us embrace various aspects of Richter’s practice, especially the ones that engage in a particular dialogue with abstraction, rendering the works of art, as it will be shown, into intra-, inter-, trans-, and multi-medial landscapes.

Le paysage est un sujet omniprésent dans l’oeuvre de l’artiste allemand Gerhard Richter. Depuis ses premières photopeintures marines, le paysage est enrichi par des médias artistiques différents et, surtout, la photographie. Cet article essaie d’explorer ces relations et références intermédiales créées, le mélange des arts et leur contribution au genre paysager. À cette fin, l’étude des exemples caractéristiques de ses paysages nous aidera à révéler le dialogue entre l’oeuvre d’art et l’abstraction, la tradition picturale et les autres arts, et ainsi découvrir un palimpseste des paysages intra-, inter-, trans-, multi-médiaux.
