Secondaire ou fondamental ? Du statut indécis de certains termes de couleur en français

Résumé

Cet article rend compte des observations faites à partir d'une recherche effectuée auprès d'informateurs québécois et français afin d'établir la distinction entre les termes de couleur fondamentaux, qui semblent former un ensemble fini, et les termes secondaires dont la liste demeure ouverte. Il importe d'examiner quelle est l'unité qui semble se prêter aux opérations de réduction à un ensemble fini de onze termes de couleur fondamentaux en français. La définition du concept de terme de couleur fondamental nous sera utile pour déterminer le statut des termes qui ont suscité le plus d'interrogations, à savoir : orange, brun, marron, beige, mauve et turquoise.

Abstract

This paper presents the observations collected in research conducted with a group of informants from Québec and France to establish the distinction between basic color terms, which appear to form a finite corpus, and secondary color terms, the list of which is unlimited. It is essential to study the element that seems to favour the reduction to a finite corpus of eleven basic color terms in French. Defining the concept of basic color term will be useful in determining the status of those French terms that presented the most difficulties, i.e. orange, brun, marron, beige, mauve and turquoise.
