Cet article compare quatre manières de penser l’entreprise responsable. Lorsque la fonction de l’entreprise fonde ses obligations morales, celles-ci se limitent aux obligations que lui impose sa fonction soit sans considérer sa capacité (fonctionnalisme strict), soit pour autant qu’elle soit compatible avec sa capacité effective (fonctionnalisme compatibiliste). Lorsque la capacité de l’entreprise fonde ses obligations morales, celles-ci se limitent aux obligations que lui impose son pouvoir, soit sans tenir compte de sa fonction (capacitarisme strict), soit pour autant qu’elle soit compatible avec sa fonction (capacitarisme compatibiliste). En raison de l’impossibilité d’aligner parfaitement les tâches morales sur les tâches sociales et de réduire toutes les obligations générales à des obligations spécifiques, le capacitarisme est préférable au fonctionnalisme. En prenant au sérieux la division du travail (moral), le capacitarisme compatibiliste se montre plus robuste que le capacitarisme strict.
Abstract
This article compares four ways of thinking corporate responsibility. When corporate responsibility is defined by its function, firm’s moral obligations are limited to obligations imposed on it by its function, whatever its capacity (strict functionalism), or as far as it is compatible with its effective capacity (compatibilist functionalism). When corporate responsibility is defined by its capacity, firms’ moral obligations are limited to obligations which its power imposes on it, whatever its function (strict capacitarism), or insofar as it is compatible with the respect of its specific function (compatibilist capacitarism). Due to the impossibility of perfectly aligning moral tasks with social tasks and of reducing all general obligations to specific obligations, capacitarism seems more convincing than functionalism. Because of the indispensability of a division of (moral) labor, compatibilist capacitarism seems more robust than strict capacitarism.
