Cet article souligne l’importance, la popularité qu’eut une ceinture de laine colorée apparue vers 1776 éventuellement nommée ceinture fléchée. Nous avons relevé les noms de 29 artistes qui entre 1778 et 1928 ont inclus dans leurs oeuvres des personnages portant cette ceinture. Ceci confirmant ce que nous ont livré dans leurs récits de voyage ou journaux personnels des visiteurs étrangers, britanniques et allemands, décrivant la ceinture de l’habitant du Canada. Plusieurs oeuvres sont citées, titres, endroits où on peut les voir. Quelques-unes sont reproduites attestant de sa présence et de son rayonnement vers l’ouest du pays et parfois outre frontière. Ces témoignages appuient la valeur patrimoniale de cet accessoire du costume du Canadien qui eut une grande importance au pays durant de nombreuses années.
Abstract
This article highlights the importance and popularity of the colourful woolen sash that appeared around 1776, and was eventually named ceinture fléchée or « Assomption sash » in translation. We have been able to identify 29 artists who have included in their works characters wearing the sash between 1778 and 1928. This confirms the accounts contained in the travel logs and personal diaries of German, British and other foreign visitors regarding the sashes worn by rural Canadians. Several works are cited, along with their titles and their places of exhibition. Some reproductions of these works show how the wearing of the sash had spread to Western Canada and even across the border. These are a testimony to the long standing importance of the sash as an aspect of Canadian textile heritage.
