The recent restoration of the earliest pictorial decoration of the portico of S. Lorenzo fuori le mura, executed under the author’s direction, provided the occasion for the reconsideration of a wide range of technical issues relating to the manufacture of the mediaeval frescoes there. Careful analysis of the technique used reveals new aspects of their making. The cycles, which date to the decade 1216-26 and the pontificate of Honorius iii, were restored according to one of the two preferred methods that were available and explanation is provided for this choice.

The epochal restoration of the entire interior decoration of the Villa Farnesina, which is currently underway by the Istituto Centrale del Restauro, is revealing the identification of a rich variety of technical issues. Specifically, the campaign in the Sala delle Prospettive, undertaken between 1976 and 1983, focuses on several new matters relating to the Renaissance tradition of Roman fresco painting. Chemical analysis of the intonaco coupled with the detailed reconstruction of the giornate results in a fascinating reevaluation of the frescoes themselves relating to their manufacture. The inspection of the surfaces reveals the exact manner in which the frescoes were constructed, making use of cartoni and spolveri, or on occasion of no final preparatory drawings at all. Secondly, the restoration of 14 pilasters a grottesche in the Sala della Galatea clearly demonstrates the exclusive use of spolveri. The remaining 11 pilasters will be cleaned in 1985. Once this campaign in the room is completed, then the exact nature of this early 16th-century cycle, with its 19th-century ‘restorations,’ will be identifiable, and will subsequently be integrated with the restoration of the Loggia di Psiche, which will commence in 1985.

Le programme de restauration de la décoration murale de la Villa Farnésine, actuellement en cours sous la direction de l’Istituto Centrale del Restauro, nous révèle plusieurs aspects techniques de la fabrication de fresques pendant la Renaissance. En particulier, les travaux dans la Sala delle Prospettive, entrepris entre 1976 et 1983, ont permis l’étude approfondie de la décoration murale à Rome à cette époque. L’analyse chimique de l’intonaco et la reconstruction détaillée des giornate ont permis aux restaurateurs de reconsidérer les méthodes de fabrication de ces fresques. Suite à un examen de leur surface, qui a révélé parfois l’utilisation des cartoni et spolveri, ils ont également pu reconstituer le processus exact de la création de ces peintures. D’autre part, seuls les spolveri ont été utilisés dans les fresques a grottesche des quatorze pilastres de la Sala della Galatea. Onze pilastres dans cette salle restent à nettoyer : ces travaux doivent commencer en 1985. Une fois terminées, ces restaurations éclaireront la nature exacte d’un cycle de fresques du début du 16^e siècle et ses « restaurations » du 19^e siècle. Les renseignements ainsi recueillis pourront être appliqués aux travaux dans la Loggia di Psiche, prévus également pour 1985.

The Director of the pictorial restorations inside the Villa Farnesina comments on various significant technical issues that are emerging during the work. In particular, he considers the importance of the maltino and the muro di pietra in the evaluation of the fresco cycles in the villa. The review of the restoration campaigns begins in the Sala della Galatea with consideration of Peruzzi’s activities on the ceiling with its special material components. Analysis of the intonaco leads to the conclusion that there are no giornate, only regular additions of malta as the work progressed. Technical innovations here can be clearly identified, ones that show Peruzzi to have been the inventer of interior frescoes a pozzolana that will become so popular in the 17th century. The paintings of Sebastiano del Piombo show, on the other hand, a sensitive recognition of the adaptability of experimental Venetian fresco techniques to the particular site of the villa by the Tiber river. Sebastiano’s rapidity of execution of the polychrome frescoes, which the restoration illuminates, must have been a spectacle for the other artists who were working there, even though the technical results are demonstrated to have been less than successful. Sebastiano’s creation of a first version of the Galatea is shown, and it is deduced that initially he must have been commissioned to fresco the entire wall to the pavement. Although Sebastiano’s technical experiments were revolutionary for the Roman scene, it is argued that the intervention of Raphael was necessary to bring to completion the decoration of the room and that lessons learned there by him regarding polychromy were subsequently developed in his bottega. The extreme differences in execution and in temperament between the Venetian and the Umbrian are movingly seen in examination of the polychromes and the final version of the Galatea. In this regard, Sodoma’s frescoes in the bedroom show a combination of Raphaelesque attitudes with Sebastianesque use of Venetian blues. The restorations are bringing to the fore these and many other exciting discoveries about the specifics of technical operations inside the villa and in Rome during the Renaissance.

Il tira là des leçons sur la polychromie qui furent développées par la suite dans son atelier. L’auteur entreprend une comparaison approfondie des fresques des deux artistes à la Villa Farnésine, et démontre de plus leur influence sur les fresques de Sodoma dans la chambre à coucher.

Reconsideration of what are called the oldest extant painting fragments in the lower basilica of S. Francesco ad Assisi focuses on technical and iconographical matters. Detailed visual inspection of the fresco fragments that are found on the arco d’ingresso of the chapel of the Magdalene underscores the representation of the Madonna as the oldest section there. It leads to the suggestion that this fragment antedates even the commonly accepted earliest cycle representing the life of Francis by the Master of Saint Francis. It is proposed that this fragment may be votive and that it could have surmounted a wall tomb. This hypothesis leads to a reconsideration of the complex problem of the construction of the lower basilica and to the strong tradition of the existence of an earlier (la terza) church in which the body of the saint was initially laid to rest. In this regard, the fragments tire a vital record in unravelling the knotty problems that still beset a full evaluation of the history of the lower basilica and its pictorial decoration.

The significance of Plutarch as the major historical source for the iconographical scheme of the decoration in the Sala Paolina, Castel Sant’Angelo (1540s) is discussed. Consideration of the fresco cycle in the room is comprehensively focused on the allusions in the iconographic programme to Paul iii and the ideology of his pontificate. The full range of literary sources is investigated and the primacy of Plutarch shown through detailed reading of each scene on the ceiling and walls. The clear associations between Alexander and Paul iii are also noted. From this, observations are made regarding the programmatic intentions of the cycle as a visualization of the political and cultural aims of Paul iii.

Attention is focused on mediaeval frescoes in the lower church of San Crisogono (surviving in part), which have not systematically been examined before. Questions such as the probable date of execution, the identity of the commissioner and the significance of the decoration are asked and answered. The usual dating of the decoration to the 10th century is, on the basis of new stylistic and iconographic evidence, shifted to the 11th century and more specifically after 1041 when the legend of Saint Benedict received visual expression in the Abbey of Montecassino. This decorative cycle appears to be a key in unlocking the dating of the cycle in S. Crisogono, in providing an iconographic model for the depiction of the various scenes, and quite possible in offering not only a stylistic reference point but also in providing the patron of the Roman frescoes. It is proposed that the patron was the abate Federico da Montecassino, who was also cardinal of S. Crisogono and for a short time before his death in 1057, Pope Stefanius ix. If this suggestion is appropriate, then new information can be obtained from the cycle regarding 11th-century mural decoration and the importance of S. Crisogono in the development of this tradition.

A new critical approach to the evaluation of mediaeval Roman mosaics and paintings is outlined. Beginning with a review of the modern consideration of the celebrated absidal mosaic in Santi Cosma e Damiano, issues of iconography, stylistic language and artistic identity are discussed concerning well-known decorative examples from the 6th to the late 13th century in Rome. Emphasis is placed on the 13th century and especially on Torriti’s mosaics in Santa Maria Maggiore and San Giovanni in Laterano, and on Cavallini’s rapport with the Master of Isaac.
