L’identité des communautés protestantes françaises, entre XVIe et XVIIe siècles, se définit d’abord par une communion de foi. Ce critère, cependant, ne suffit pas : une approche anthropologique interrogeant la dimension réfléchie des communautés, c’est-à-dire les représentations qu’elles ont d’elles-mêmes, permet de retracer les liens symboliques qui produisent leur cohésion (unité du multiple). Or, pendant les guerres de Religion puis face à la « tolérance dans l’intolérance » inaugurée par l’édit de Nantes, les représentations des protestants français évoluent par rapport au pouvoir monarchique et à ses changements d’attitude à leur égard, arrivant jusqu’à la Révocation de 1685.

The identity of French Protestant communities during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries may be defined above all as a communion of faith. On its own, however, this is not a sufficient criterion : an anthropological point of view interrogating the reflexive aspect of these communities, that is, the way they represented themselves, can further help us to trace the symbolic relations that allowed them to maintain their cohesion (unity in diversity). Moreover, during the Wars of Religion and later the “intolerant tolerance” inaugurated by the Edict of Nantes, representations of French Protestants evolved in response to the monarchy and changes in its attitude towards them, up until the revocation of the Edict in 1685.

Marquée par une intolérance structurelle, la société française du XVIe siècle n’était pas préparée à accueillir la divergence religieuse. Catholiques et réformés s’évertuèrent donc réciproquement à annihiler la « fausse religion ». Minoritaires, les huguenots aspiraient naturellement à obtenir une sécurité juridique que seule la puissance souveraine pouvait lui fournir. Il fallut cependant attendre le règne d’Henri IV pour qu’enfin apparaisse un statut juridique pérenne, l’édit de Nantes, fruit d’âpres pourparlers entre les représentants calvinistes et la monarchie. Si l’ensemble ainsi promulgué avait le mérite de mettre fin à une longue attente, ses incertitudes entraînèrent au sein des élites protestantes des divisions profondes et durables entre « Fermes » et « Prudents ». Cette présentation se proposera donc d’analyser les contours de ces négociations mais aussi leur impact sur les rapports de forces internes et sur l’organisation juridico-politique du corps réformé.

Sixteenth-century French society, marked as it was by structural intolerance, was ill suited to accommodating religious difference. Catholics and Reformists both made efforts to extinguish the ‘false religion’ of their opponents. Being in the minority, the Huguenots naturally strove to gain legal protection, which could only be granted by the power of the sovereign. Yet they had to wait until the reign of Henry IV before any lasting legal status was created, in the event under the provisions of the Edict of Nantes, the fruit of bitter negotiations between the Calvinists and the Crown. Although the Edict’s promulgation brought a welcome end to a lengthy waiting period, its ambiguities resulted in deep and permanent divisions among the Protestant élite, separating the “firm” from the “prudent.” This article proposes to analyze the shape taken by these negotiations as well as their impact on the internal power-relations and juridico-political organization of the Reformist movement.

Les assemblées politiques des protestants français ont connu un renouvellement profond de leurs fonctions au début du XVIIe siècle. En abordant ces institutions singulières à travers le prisme de la notion de représentation, à la fois comme mise en signe et comme action politique, cet article voudrait montrer la façon dont elles ont repensé le rapport à l’action politique du parti huguenot et ont joué un rôle central dans sa définition en tant que communauté politique. On s’interrogera donc sur ce que la constitution en assemblée apportait et cherchait à dire des réformés, ainsi que sur la façon dont le contrôle de cette institution en tant qu’outil de représentation occupait une place centrale au sein de leur action politique.

The political assemblies of French Protestants underwent a profound renewal of their functions at the beginning of the seventeenth century. By approaching these singular institutions through the prism of the notion of representation, both as a sign and as a political action, this article aims to show how they rethought the relationship of the Huguenot party with political action and played a central role in defining it as a political community. It will therefore examine what the assembly constitution brought and sought to say about the Reformed, as well as the way in which the control of the assemblies as a tool of representation was central to their political action.

Lors du règne personnel de Louis XIV et jusqu’à la Révocation (1661–85), dans le contexte d’une répression judiciaire contre la minorité réformée et d’une remise en cause du régime de l’édit de Nantes, les synodes provinciaux représentent de facto les Églises. En leur sein, ce sont des pasteurs, et notamment les modérateurs, qui portent la parole de leurs communautés. La surveillance royale est principalement exercée par des commissaires (y compris des catholiques à partir de 1679) présents dans les synodes. Les échanges entre les modérateurs et les représentants du roi permettent donc de voir comment le discours de soumission à la monarchie est recherché, consigné et valorisé par les commissaires, mais parfois conditionné, voire contesté par les pasteurs, en particulier lorsque la liberté de conscience est remise en cause et que les lois divines semblent entravées par la législation royale.

During the period of Louis XIV’s reign as sole ruler of France and prior to the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1661–1685)—years characterized by legal repression of the Reformist minority and uncertainty around the Edict’s régime of tolerance—provincial synods were the de facto representatives of the reformed Churches. Here, it was pastors, and more particularly moderators, who acted as the voice of their communities. Royal oversight was chiefly maintained by commissioners (including Catholics after 1679) who were present in the synods. The exchanges that took place between the moderators and the representatives of the king reveal how a discourse of submission to the monarchy was established and cultivated by the commissioners, while sometimes being conditioned or contested by the pastors, particularly in cases where freedom of conscience was threatened and divine law appeared to be impeded by royal decree.

Après la Révocation de l’édit de Nantes, le culte protestant est interdit pendant plus d’un siècle en France. Une résistance voit le jour : les protestants se réunissent pour des cultes clandestins, privés ou publics. Plus on avance dans ce siècle de répression, plus la résistance est organisée : à partir de 1718, des pasteurs, formés clandestinement à l’étranger, arrivent en France pour encadrer les fidèles. Cette étude présente les objets utilisés par la résistance, certains lui permettant de continuer ses activités clandestines, d’autres de dissimuler son existence et de protéger les fidèles. Des livres, tout d’abord, permettent le culte privé, au sein du domicile. À partir de l’arrivée des pasteurs, les protestants ont recours à des objets liturgiques pour le culte public, dont certains sont cachés de manière ingénieuse dans leur quotidien. Enfin, les maisons protestantes sont aménagées pour accueillir et dissimuler les activités clandestines des fidèles.

After the Edict of Nantes is revoked, Protestantism is declared illegal in France, but Protestants gather for private or public clandestine worship services, creating a resistance movement. As the century of repression progresses, the resistance becomes more organized: from 1718 onwards, pastors are trained in Switzerland and sent back to France to oversee the clandestine churches. This study explores the objects used by the resistance, some allowing it to continue its illegal activities, others to hide its existence and protect the faithful. First of all, books enable Protestants to worship privately, within their homes. Secondly, as pastors begin overseeing public worship services, Protestants use liturgical objects, some of which are ingenuously hidden in their everyday life. Finally, Protestant houses are adapted to accommodate and hide clandestine activities.

En discutant de l’usage des sources et de leurs implications politiques à l’intérieur de la Francogallia de François Hotman, l’auteur propose de rejoindre la problématique de la représentation de la communauté protestante au travers de l’usage du passé pendant le conflit civil. Les instruments techniques et extra-techniques qui sembleraient dénoncer une histoire moderne, voire critique, peuvent être compris comme des moyens idéologiques pour imposer une représentation de la communauté nationale qui dépasse les factions : une communauté nationale ancienne qui soutiendrait toutefois les positions du parti protestant. Grâce à l’antiquaire, les interrogations sur les polices, les langues et les institutions des origines gauloises, franques et germaniques du Royaume sont également des propos politiques. Ainsi, les sources et leurs interprétations sont un dispositif permettant de déplacer un débat que nous dirions idéologique vers un ordre supposément objectif et factuel, à la fois descriptif du passé et prescriptif pour le présent.

Through a discussion of the use of sources and their political implications in François Hotman’s Francogallia, the author proposes to approach the question of representations of the Protestant community from the point of view of appeals to the past during the civil conflict. Technical and extra-technical material, which might seem to suggest modern critical historiography, can be understood as an ideological means of imposing a representation of national community that transcends factionalism: in this case, an ancient national community that nevertheless reflects the positions of the Protestant party. Thanks to antiquarian knowledge, the examination of the customs, languages, and institutions of the French kingdom’s Gallic, Frankish, and Germanic origins becomes a political statement. Hotman’s sources and their interpretation thus constitute a framework enabling him to present what we might call an ideological debate in terms of objective facts, giving at once a description of the past and a prescription for the present.

Dans la préface de son Histoire universelle (1616), le calviniste Agrippa d’Aubigné établit une opposition fondamentale entre l’historien « pathétique et faux » et celui qui serait « astorge et véritable », opposition qui refuse explicitement le rapport nécessaire entre pathos et vérité qui fonde la représentation de la communauté protestante dans son poème épique, Les Tragiques, publié la même année. Une analyse poussée de ce mot étrange, « astorge », choisi par Aubigné pour caractériser sa posture d’historien, nous permet de montrer que loin d’être complémentaires, les deux conceptions de la vérité historique qui sous-tendent les deux ouvrages – l’une politique, l’autre théologique – s’avèrent profondément incompatibles dans le contexte où Aubigné voulait intervenir.

In the preface to his Histoire universelle (1616), the Calvinist Agrippa d’Aubigné establishes a fundamental opposition between a historian he calls “pathétique et faux” and one that is “astorge et véritable”. This opposition constitutes an explicit rejection of the necessary bond between pathos and truth that grounds Aubigné’s representation of the Protestant community in his epic poem,Les Tragiques, published in the same year. An extended analysis of the strange word that Aubigné uses to describe his historiographical stance—“astorge”—reveals that far from being complementary, the two conceptions of historical truth that underlie these two works—one political, the other theological—are in fact profoundly incompatible in the context in which Aubigné sought to intervene.

Jean-Sigismond Szapolyai (1540–71), dit Jean II, premier prince de Transylvanie (1570–71) après avoir été roi élu de Hongrie, était fortement influencé par le tandem unitarien Giorgio Biandrata-François Dávid dans les dernières années de sa vie. En 1571, l’unitarisme est même devenu la quatrième religion possédant un droit de cité plein et entier en Transylvanie, ce qui lui valait une égalité devant la loi avec le catholicisme, le luthéranisme et le calvinisme. Même si les successeurs de Jean II étaient catholiques dans les trois dernières décennies du xvie siècle puis calvinistes au xviie siècle, les unitariens ont prospéré jusqu’aux années 1580, possédant et maintenant une grande influence dans la principauté jusqu’aux années 1630. Cet article fait le point sur l’implication de cette communauté dans la vie politique et diplomatique transylvaine de la Renaissance pour en étudier les représentations et les perceptions en lien avec le pouvoir princier dans la zone d’affrontement de la République chrétienne et de l’Empire ottoman au temps des guerres de Religion européennes.

John Sigismund Szapolyai, also known as John II, who was elected King of Hungary and later become the first Prince of Transylvania (1570–71), was heavily influenced in the last years of his life by the two Unitarian thinkers Giorgio Biandrata and Ferenc Dávid. In 1571, Unitarianism even became the fourth religion to enjoy full civil rights in Transylvania, which meant it was considered equal to Catholicism, Lutheranism, and Calvinism in the eyes of the law. Although John II’s successors were all Catholic in the last three decades of the sixteenth century and Calvinist in the seventeenth, the Unitarians flourished up until the 1580s and held great influence in the country until the 1630s. This article assesses the involvement of this community in the political and diplomatic life of Renaissance Transylvania, in order to understand the representations and perceptions of the Unitarians in relation to monarchical power along the frontier between Christendom and the Ottoman Empire during the Wars of Religion.
