Late medieval artes moriendi are an example of the opposition between spiritual and bodily senses, as is otherwise known in mystical texts. The artes moriendi counselled believers in their hour of death, when their physical senses were fading away. As this article will argue, this handicap could turn into an advantage when it led to a focus on the spiritual senses. Seeing with the inner eye would bring believers onto the path to God and, thus, help them to overcome temporal death through eternal life. Even if the genre of ars moriendi came to an end with the Reformation in Protestant countries, the idea of spiritual senses overcoming death survived.

Les artes moriendi du Moyen Âge tardif illustrent l’opposition entre les sens spirituels et corporels, telle qu’on la retrouve par ailleurs dans les textes mystiques. Les artes moriendi conseillaient les croyants à l’approche de la mort, lorsque leurs sens physiques faiblissaient. Comme le soutient le présent article, ce déficit pouvait se transformer en avantage s’il recentrait l’attention sur les sens spirituels. Le regard intérieur devait mettre les croyants sur le chemin de Dieu et les aider ainsi à surmonter la mort temporelle par la vie éternelle. Même si le genre de l’ars moriendi a pris fin avec la Réforme dans les pays protestants, l’idée des sens spirituels surmontant la mort a perduré.

The Spanish Inquisition’s notorious public executions, celebrated in tandem with elaborate spectacles called autos-de-fe, foreground the contested theological weight of death and the senses at the apogee of the Spanish Reformation. Joining efforts to re-evaluate the sensory in early modernity, this article argues that contemporaneous accounts of autos-de-fe simultaneously perpetuate and challenge the notion that the Reformation constituted a fundamental change to theological interpretations of the senses. Published evangelical treatises by Reinaldo González de Montes and Juan Pérez de Pineda, alongside official manuscripts stored in the Inquisition’s archives, collectively elucidate the transformations of the senses in the aftermath of the Reformation in Spain. Moreover, Pérez’s corpus exemplifies Protestantism’s paradoxical interpretations of the deadly autos, viewing their sensorial abundance at once as profoundly significant and utterly meaningless.

Les célèbres exécutions publiques de l’Inquisition espagnole, accompagnées de spectacles élaborés nommés autos-de-fe, mettent en évidence la portée théologique contestée de la mort et des sens à l’apogée de la Réforme espagnole. S’inscrivant dans la démarche de réévaluation du sensoriel au début de la modernité, le présent article soutient que les récits contemporains des autos-de-fe perpétuent et remettent simultanément en cause l’idée voulant que la Réforme ait conduit à un changement fondamental dans les interprétations théologiques des sens. Les traités évangéliques publiés par Reinaldo González de Montes et Juan Pérez de Pineda, ainsi que des manuscrits officiels conservés dans les archives de l’Inquisition, élucident collectivement les transformations des sens dans la foulée de la Réforme en Espagne. While some scholars in eighteenth-century England identified a link between the smell of the dead and the spread of diseases, it was not until the nineteenth century that the dead were no longer buried in London’s inner-urban churchyards. This article draws attention to the multiplicity of voices when it came to the links between bad smells and disease and argues that whether there was a connection between the two was by no means a matter of scholarly consensus. While some hygiene reformers emphasized the possibility of the spread of diseases through the air, others opposed this view, and while theories about miasma retained some influence, they were also challenged and debated. This article therefore challenges a linear narrative of the movement of dead bodies from inner-urban cemeteries to the outskirts of towns based on fears that the dead might spread harmful vapours. It argues instead that already in the eighteenth century, prominent medical professionals questioned the connection between a pollution of the air through the dead and a spread of diseases. Even in the nineteenth century, there was no straightforward deodorization effort, but it was rather the confluence of a range of different factors, only one of which involved concerns about hygiene, that led to the relocation of burial sites. Taking the example of the English metropolis of London, this article shows that considering the smell of the dead can enhance our understanding of the functioning and planning of towns as well as the spaces of the dead more generally.

Si certains érudits du XVIIIe siècle anglais ont établi un lien entre l’odeur des morts et la propagation des maladies, ce n’est qu’au xixe siècle que l’on cessa d’enterrer les morts dans les cimetières intra-urbains de Londres. Le présent article souligne la multiplicité des voix qui se sont exprimées sur les liens entre les mauvaises odeurs et les maladies, et soutient que l’existence d’un lien entre ces deux phénomènes ne faisait en aucun cas l’objet d’un consensus savant. Alors que certains réformateurs sanitaires insistaient sur la possibilité d’une transmission aérienne des maladies, d’autres rejetaient cette hypothèse; et si les théories miasmatiques conservaient une certaine influence, elles faisaient également l’objet de débats. Cet article remet ainsi en question le récit linéaire voulant que les cadavres aient été déplacés des cimetières intra-urbains vers la périphérie des villes par crainte que les morts ne répandent des vapeurs nocives. Il soutient plutôt que dès le XVIIIe siècle, d’éminents professionnels de la santé ont mis en doute le lien entre la pollution de l’air par les morts et la propagation des maladies. Même au XIXe siècle, il n’y a pas eu de tentative directe de purification de l’air, et c’est plutôt une convergence de facteurs, dont un seul était lié aux préoccupations sanitaires, qui a conduit au déplacement des lieux d’inhumation. En prenant pour exemple la métropole anglaise de Londres, cet article montre que la prise en compte de l’odeur des morts peut nous aider à mieux comprendre le fonctionnement et l’aménagement des villes, ainsi que les espaces dédiés aux morts de manière plus générale.

This article examines the great age of corporal punishments in German-speaking lands to draw attention to the historical intersections between senses, disability, and social death. Between approximately 1400 and 1550, civic and territorial magistrates administered a wide variety of corporal punishments on subjects, including mutilating punishments such as blinding. This article sketches the history of judicial blinding through a close reading of the archival record from the free imperial city of Frankfurt am Main and contextualizes this evidence by reference to the practice in other sites across German-speaking lands. It explains the origins of judicial blinding, analyzes major patterns in how the punishment was administered, and interprets the age of judicial blinding as a long experiment in social death. To make this final interpretive argument, this article shows how those who suffered the punishment embodied the three major criteria associated with social death in modern theoretical discussions of the concept: loss of bodily integrity, loss of social identity, and loss of social networks. Throughout, analysis and interpretation bring together insights from early modern sensory history and disability history.

Le présent article examine la grande époque des châtiments corporels dans les pays germanophones en vue d’attirer l’attention sur les liens historiques entre les sens, le handicap et la mort sociale. Entre environ 1400 et 1550, les magistrats civiques et territoriaux ont administré une grande variété de châtiments corporels à leurs sujets, y compris des mutilations comme l’aveuglement. Cet article esquisse l’histoire de l’aveuglement judiciaire à travers une lecture attentive des archives de la ville impériale libre de Francfort-sur-le-Main, en contextualisant ces documents à la lumière des usages en vigueur dans différentes régions germanophones. Il explique les origines de l’aveuglement judiciaire, analyse les principales manières d’administrer le châtiment et interprète l’époque de l’aveuglement judiciaire comme une longue expérience sur la mort sociale. Pour étayer ce dernier argument interprétatif, l’article montre en quoi les condamnés réunissaient les trois principaux critères associés à la mort sociale, selon les discours théoriques modernes sur cette notion : la perte de l’intégrité corporelle, la perte de l’identité sociale et la perte des réseaux sociaux. Au fil de l’article, l’analyse et l’interprétation font appel à l’histoire sensorielle des premiers temps modernes et à l’histoire du handicap.

This article takes a multi-sensory approach to the baroque drama de honra in order to enlighten the sensory expectations (thirst for blood and body horror) of the public who came to witness how several women accused of adultery were killed on stage. In this case, the effects of the tragedy are constructed from uxoricides sometimes performed in explicit sacrificial rituals. Thus, every studied play contributes to the creation of a school of exemplarity in the emotional community of theatregoers through the morbid excitement of the senses aroused by violence. From Doña Mencía’s ritualistic death in El médico de su honra (1635) to the Machiavellian manslaughter orchestrated by the Duke of Ferrara in El castigo sin venganza (1631), smell, touch, sight, and hearing all play a role in the configuration of the oppressive atmospheres that are characteristic of honour plays. Acting stimulates the senses of the audience, who thereby perceives the endangered corporeality of the murdered women. Their deaths, represented in an exceptional way, are key to the reception of the four comedias analyzed here.

Public executions in early modern Europe were shocking spectacles designed to impress the crowds who witnessed them. They were a manifestation of justice and the power of the state and had an exemplary purpose, so they were conceived as performances with a theatrical dimension that sought to stimulate the senses of the public. As far as the prisoners were concerned, they were expected to accept their collective fate and not to panic during the ritual of punishment, and thus to die a good death. They could only achieve this by trying to suspend their senses and thereby cushion the impact of the spectacle of which they were the protagonists. Comforters and priests were in charge of helping and preparing prisoners in the hours leading up to the execution. In seeking to understand this tension between stimulation and inhibition of the senses, this article analyzes an extraordinary unpublished source on public executions in Valencia at the end of the eighteenth century: the sermons and exhortations of the priest Juan Gascó, who assisted those condemned to death in the city between 1787 and 1801.

On Martha’s Vineyard there was a particularly long-lasting Puritan mission among the Native Americans. This article examines how the clergy there attempted to apply the Puritan ideal of the “visible saints” to the converted Indians and what implications Christianity should have had for their sensory experiences and sensual forms of expression. In a first step, the normative requirements that defined Puritanism around 1700 will be explained on the basis of Cotton Mather’s theology. Dealing with death and dying served as a litmus test for a successful “change of heart.” Using the example of the promotional treatise Indian Converts (1727) by the third-generation missionary Experience Mayhew, who was active on Martha’s Vineyard, the article explores the question of how the senses of hearing and seeing were evaluated in this context. Reading this source against the grain reveals normative conflicts and ambivalences that can deepen our understanding of how coexistence was enabled and to what extent sensory agency was possible for the Native Americans.

Sur l’île de Martha’s Vineyard s’est déroulée auprès des Autochtones une mission puritaine particulièrement longue. Le présent article montre comment le clergé a tenté d’appliquer l’idéal puritain des « saints visibles » aux Indiens convertis et examine les implications que le christianisme a dû avoir pour leurs expériences sensorielles et leurs formes d’expression sensuelles. Dans un premier temps, les exigences normatives qui définissaient le puritanisme vers 1700 sont expliquées à la lumière de la théologie de Cotton Mather. Faire face à la mort et à l’agonie était la condition décisive d’un « changement de cœur » réussi. En prenant pour exemple le traité promotionnel Indian Converts (1727) du missionnaire de troisième génération Experience Mayhew, qui a exercé à Martha’s Vineyard, je me penche sur la manière dont l’ouïe et la vue étaient évaluées dans ce contexte. Une lecture à contre-courant de cette source révèle des ambivalences et des conflits normatifs qui peuvent nous aider à mieux comprendre comment la coexistence a pu s’instaurer et dans quelle mesure la liberté sensorielle était possible pour les Autochtones.

Across early modern and nineteenth-century Europe it was widely believed that the corpses of executed criminals had thaumaturgical powers that could miraculously cure a range of illnesses if they were touched or ingested. This article looks at how touch was the key sense involved in how the magical powers of the corpses of the condemned could transfer to the living. It argues that these beliefs were linked to a much older belief in relics, which also require physical proximity in order to function effectively. It explores the different traditions around the use of these body parts across Europe, arguing that variations in practices were centred on differing methods of execution in different regions rather than on varying religious beliefs.

Le présent article examine dans quelle mesure le toucher était le principal sens par lequel les pouvoirs magiques des cadavres des condamnés pouvaient être transférés aux vivants. This article explores the significant role laypeople played in the early modern post-mortem process in eighteenth-century England, focusing on their sensory engagement with the deceased. Using knowledge drawn from personal experience, family lore, and self-help manuals on home “physick,” laypeople used their sensory understanding of bodies in sickness and health to help determine a cause of death. By investigating how sensory knowledge shaped the interpretation of death, this article explores how laypeople’s tactile and visual interactions with the body influenced the judicial process. This study underscores how lay knowledge informed the legal system’s inquiries into death, and how lay sensory experience and expertise played pivotal roles in early modern judicial conclusions.

This article offers an analysis of Thomas Goffe’s portrayal of Turkish persons in his plays The Raging Turk (1618) and The Courageous Turk (1619), which represent specific English understandings of Ottoman beliefs about proper sensorial behaviour in political and religious contexts, in particular those concerning law and justice. The article offers a counter to the “Othering” narrative by arguing that specific characters are represented in sensorially positive manners to protect English political interests, especially related to murders within the family that are portrayed in the national interests of Ottoman leaders. The article seeks to facilitate this aim by examining Goffe’s portrayals of Ottoman rulers and the role that sensory elements played in his representations of their power and legitimacy. In particular, the article focuses on death rituals of official violence—executions—and how the senses were involved in their depiction. It grows out of historiographical debates on perceptions of the Other and stereotypes of Ottoman Islam and Orientalism. In doing so, the article seeks to demonstrate that Goffe’s work provides an alternative view of “the Turk” from that of many contemporaries—one that is less about brutality and barbarism and more about the constraints of law in a regulated polity. It arrives at the consensus that Goffe’s representation of male Turkish rulers is demonstrative of an emerging Turkish stereotype that is less about violence for its own sake and more about lawful, justified violence within the bounds of Ottoman culture and legal institutions.

L’article s’oppose au discours de l’« altérisation » en soulignant que, dans le but de protéger les intérêts politiques anglais, certains personnages sont représentés de manière positive sur le plan sensoriel, notamment quand il s’agit de meurtres intrafamiliaux présentés comme conformes à l’intérêt national des dirigeants ottomans. L’article examine ainsi l’image des dirigeants ottomans chez Goffe, de même que le rôle joué par les éléments sensoriels dans les représentations de leur pouvoir et de leur légitimité. Il met un accent particulier sur les rituels de mort de la violence officielle – les exécutions – et sur la place des sens dans leur représentation. L’article s’inscrit dans des débats historiographiques sur les perceptions de l’Autre et les stéréotypes de l’islam ottoman et de l’orientalisme. Partant de ce cadre, il cherche à démontrer que l’œuvre de Goffe présente une vision du « Turc » différente de celle de nombreux contemporains, moins axée sur la brutalité et la barbarie que sur les contraintes légales d’un État réglementé. Il conclut que la représentation des dirigeants turcs masculins, chez Goffe, témoigne de l’émergence d’un stéréotype turc moins axé sur la violence gratuite que sur une violence légale et justifiée, encadrée par la culture et les institutions juridiques ottomanes.
