Les auteurs renaissants tâchent souvent de forger leurs images d’auteur en disposant des textes et des gravures au seuil des livres, en s’occupant soigneusement de leur édition ou en prenant soin de l’architecture des oeuvres, c’est-à-dire l’organisation des textes à l’intérieur du livre. Ces auteurs essayent également de fonder cette image en l’associant à une figure mythique. C’est le cas de Ronsard et de Fernando de Herrera, respectivement dans Les Amours (1552) et Algunas Obras (1582). Comme nous cherchons à le montrer, le Français, en entremêlant sa bien-aimée à la figure mythique de la Cassandre troyenne, rapproche son image de celle du dieu qui tombe amoureux d’elle. Comme Ronsard, Herrera dispose les poèmes de son livre de façon à faire résonner sa voix comme la voix du dieu musagète. Néanmoins, le Sévillan, au lieu d’utiliser les poèmes d’amour de son recueil dans ce processus, se sert des textes en hommage à Ferdinand III, de la ville de Séville et de l’art local.

Renaissance authors often attempt to fashion their authorial image by their arrangement of texts and engravings at the beginning of their books, by giving careful thought to editorial questions, or by attending to the architecture of their works–that is, to the organization of texts within a book. They also tend to ground this self-fashioning by associating themselves with a mythical figure. Two examples of this are Ronsard and Fernando de Herrera, in Les Amours (1552) and Algunas Obras (1582) respectively. This article attempts to show how Ronsard, by integrating references to the mythic Cassandra into the depiction of his beloved, fashions his own image after that of the god who falls in love with the Trojan prophetess. Similarly to Ronsard, Herrera arranges the poems in his book in such a way as to make his voice echo that of Apollo. However, instead of utilizing the love poetry in his collection to achieve this effect, he makes use of texts written in honour of Ferdinand III, the city of Seville, and its artistic heritage.

A painting by Georg Lemberger (c. 1490–1540) dated 1535 and housed in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg presents a conspicuous variation of the representative Lutheran iconography, the Law and Gospel. The quintessential composition is delineated by the juxtaposition of scenes from the Old and New Testaments set against an unembellished backdrop. In Lemberger’s artistic rendition, however, the positions of the two testaments are inverted and accompanied by a tumultuous landscape in the background. The depictions of the Law and Gospel were conceived as an allegorical representation of faith, elucidating Luther’s doctrine of justificatio sola fide and imparting assurance to observers regarding their individual salvation. In contrast, Lemberger’s revised version portrays human frailty easily falling back into doubts and uncertainty about God and redemption. By giving a visual form to the negative experience the faithful would generally share, the image reminds viewers that they are not alone in such suffering and wondering.

Un tableau de Georg Lemberger (v. 1490–1540) daté de 1535 et conservé au Germanisches Nationalmuseum de Nuremberg est une variation manifeste sur le thème iconographique luthérien de la Loi et l’Évangile. La composition typique juxtapose des scènes de l’Ancien et du Nouveau Testament sur un arrière-plan sans fioritures. Dans l’interprétation artistique de Lemberger, la position des deux testaments est toutefois inversée, et l’arrière-plan montre un paysage tumultueux. Les représentations de la Loi et l’Évangile étaient conçues comme une allégorie de la foi, élucidant la doctrine luthérienne de la justificatio sola fideet donnant aux spectateurs l’assurance de leur salut personnel. En revanche, la version révisée de Lemberger dépeint la faiblesse humaine qui retombe facilement dans le doute et l’incertitude vis-à-vis de Dieu et de la rédemption. En donnant une forme visuelle à une expérience négative commune à la plupart des fidèles, l’image rappelle aux spectateurs qu’ils ne sont pas seuls à souffrir et à douter.

Theodore Beza’s 1550 Abraham sacrifiant continues a rich tradition of translation and exegesis of the Akedah in the vibrant context of the humanist Reformation. Beza translates not so much from one language to another, since he takes the Olivetan Bible’s text of Genesis 22 for the argument of his play, but rather fuses two cultures and genres, Biblical narrative and Greek tragedy. His choice entails a crucial tension: a drama of redemption cannot be tragic. In fact, Beza incorporates comic elements from both medieval and classical sources in his work. Nonetheless, his work puts in play Calvinist themes such as saving faith and predestination. A modern translation should be faithful both to Beza’s adaptation of classical forms, such as stichomythia and choral odes, and to his expression of reformed doctrine, in the spirit of Arthur Golding’s near-contemporary English version of 1575. Like Golding’s translation, mine will inevitably adapt form and content to each other, with luck conveying Beza’s literary theology in the process.

L’Abraham sacrifiant de Théodore de Bèze, publié en 1550 dans l’effervescence de la Réforme humaniste, s’inscrit dans un riche courant de traduction et d’exégèse de l’Akedah. Théodore de Bèze ne traduit guère d’une langue à l’autre, puisqu’il prend comme argument de sa pièce la version de Genèse 22 de la Bible d’Olivetan. Il fusionne plutôt deux cultures et deux genres : le récit biblique et la tragédie grecque. Son choix entraîne une tension fondamentale, car un drame de rédemption ne saurait être tragique. En fait, Théodore de Bèze intègre dans son oeuvre des éléments comiques provenant à la fois de sources médiévales et classiques. La pièce intègre néanmoins des thèmes calvinistes comme la foi salvatrice et la prédestination. Une traduction moderne se doit d’être fidèle, d’une part, à l’adaptation des formes classiques comme la stichomythie et les odes chorales, et d’autre part, à l’expression de la doctrine réformée, dans l’esprit de la version anglaise quasi contemporaine d’Arthur Golding (1575). Comme cette traduction, la mienne accordera nécessairement la forme et le contenu, avec l’espoir de bien rendre la théologie littéraire de Théodore de Bèze.

This article addresses Niccolò Machiavelli’s role in a five-century-long controversy surrounding the execution of the Florentine captain-general Paolo Vitelli in October 1499. The official letters and dispatches Machiavelli wrote shortly before and after the event portrayed Vitelli as a traitor, thus defending the Signoria’s decision to execute the captain. In chapter 12 of The Prince, however, Machiavelli changes his tone, implying that it was not the alleged treason but the captain’s fame and Florentine insecurity that lead to his death. Given that many contemporaries praised Vitelli and seriously doubted his guilt, Machiavelli’s ambivalent positioning requires explanation. By way of the first sustained analysis of the Vitelli affair, this article will shed new light on Machiavelli’s early involvement in Florence’s political machinations. It will show how Machiavelli, as a loyal servant to his beloved Republic, coordinated, defended, and justified in his writings the course of action against Vitelli.

Cet article traite du rôle joué par Nicolas Machiavel dans une controverse longue de cinq siècles : l’exécution du capitaine général florentin Paolo Vitelli en octobre 1499. Les lettres et dépêches officielles rédigées par Machiavel peu avant et après l’événement présentaient Vitelli comme un traître, justifiant ainsi la décision de la Signoria d’exécuter le capitaine. Dans le chapitre 12 du Prince, Machiavel change toutefois de ton, laissant entendre que ce n’est pas la trahison présumée, mais la renommée du capitaine et l’insécurité florentine qui ont conduit à l’exécution. Étant donné que de nombreux contemporains ont fait l’éloge de Vitelli et sérieusement mis en doute sa culpabilité, la position ambivalente de Machiavel nécessite une explication. À travers la première analyse approfondie de l’affaire Vitelli, cet article jette un nouvel éclairage sur les premières interventions de Machiavel dans les intrigues politiques florentines. Il montre comment Machiavel, en loyal serviteur de sa république bien-aimée, a coordonné, défendu et justifié dans ses écrits les manoeuvres entreprises contre Vitelli.

Recent scholarship that either challenges Milton’s authorship of De Doctrina Christiana or argues that De Doctrina Christiana is Miltonic but should not be used as a gloss upon Paradise Lost opens up the possibility to interpret Milton’s epic without deference to the Antitrinitarian treatise. A close textual analysis of Adam’s interaction with the Presence Divine in Paradise Lost 8.295–499 reveals, first, that the Presence Divine, contrary to the prevailing view of Milton scholarship, is the Son of God as opposed to God the Father. Moreover, Milton’s presentation of the Presence Divine is strikingly Trinitarian—in tension with De Doctrina Christiana and contrary to the received interpretation in Milton scholarship—and notably consistent with orthodox Trinitarian writings concerning the Son of God throughout church history, particularly orthodox reformed writings from the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries.

Les travaux récents qui remettent en question l’attribution à Milton du De Doctrina Christiana ou qui affirment que cette oeuvre, bien qu’écrite par Milton, ne doit pas orienter la lecture du Paradis perdu, invitent à interpréter l’épopée miltonienne indépendamment de cet écrit antitrinitaire. Une analyse textuelle approfondie de l’interaction entre Adam et la Présence divine dans Le Paradis perdu (8, 295-499) révèle tout d’abord que la Présence divine, contrairement à l’opinion dominante des spécialistes de Milton, est le Fils de Dieu et non Dieu le Père. De plus, la Présence divine prend chez Milton un aspect résolument trinitaire, qui se trouve en tension avec le De Doctrina Christiana et s’oppose à l’interprétation établie dans les études miltoniennes. Cette représentation est particulièrement conforme aux écrits trinitaires orthodoxes sur le Fils de Dieu à travers l’histoire de l’Église, en particulier les écrits réformés orthodoxes des seizième, dix-septième et dix-huitième siècles.
