Le Québec et le Canada comme collectivités neuves. Esquisse d'étude comparée

Résumé

L'auteur présente une démarche d'analyse originale pour l'étude des sociétés du Nouveau Monde (incluant l'Australasie et l'Afrique du Sud). Essentiellement comparative, cette problématique des collectivités neuves (ou cultures fondatrices) s'articule à quelques interrogations fondamentales relatives à la formation de ces cultures et à l'institution de leur rapport aux nouveaux espaces-continuité et rupture à l'égard des métropoles européennes, élaboration de représentations et de finalités collectives (ex. formulation d'utopies), essor de l'idée nationale, construction de la mémoire, recherche d'une identité, appropriation symbolique du territoire dans la culture savante et dans la culture populaire, etc. La confrontation des divers itinéraires parcourus par ces collectivités peut aider à mieux comprendre les spécificités de chacune en même temps que certains processus généraux qui commandent la formation et l'évolution des imaginaires collectifs.

Abstract

The author outlines his concept of new collectivities (or founding cultures), as the basis of an original approach for the study of the New World societies (including Australasia and South Africa). Essentially comparative, the proposed analytical framework is built around a set of far-reaching interrogations pertaining to the formation of these collectivities and the institution of their relationship to the new land : continuity and rupture with European mother countries, definition of self-representations, collective goals and values (e.g. through utopias), emergence of nationhood, construction of a memory, the quest for an identity, the symbolic appropriation of the territory in both elitist and popular cultures, etc. The author believes that the confrontration of the various historical itineraries pursued by the New World collectivities will help us better understand each of them and further our knowledge of the basic processes that govern the formation and the evolution of the collective imaginations. For the sake of Quebec studies in particular, this call for comparison and for a widening of the analytical perspectives seems pertinent enough.
