Investigations of the hydrogeochemical and structural characteristics of groundwater flows in an Alpine hydrothermal reservoir (Allevard Massif, French Western Alps) are carried out in order to define the origin and genesis of thermal and mineral waters.
The geological formations constituting the Allevard Massif consist of a Hercynian basement and a continuous sedimentary cover from Carboniferous to Middle Jurassic. The basement is composed mainly of micaschists, the sedimentary cover of Paleozoic clastic deposits : Triassic formations (evaporites, dolomites, limestones); Liassic calcareous marls, schistics marls and Limestones. A groundwater outlet (Allevard Spring) from this reservoir is located in the calcareous terrains of Lias.
The basement-cover contact is a major N40 subvertical fault. Faulting tectonics and subsequent rock fracturing is important for the hydrogeology of the area under study since the geological formations are initially impermeable (except for the Triassic terrains). Observations of underground galleries in the neighbourhood of the spring showed the presence of water outflows located on N40 strike-slip faults affecting both the basement and the Liassic terrains. The role of faulting tectonics in groundwater occurrence is indeed clearly emphasized by the position of the Allevard Spring at the intersection of two major faults with N60 and N140 trends.
Available data cover nearly a hundred years (1888-1930) and emphasize the great variability of the chemical features of the spring water. This is related to the tact that the water outflowing from the spring is a mixture in varying proportions of waters from different sources. Combined interpretation of the structural characteristics, isotopical (3H; 18O; 2H; 34S) and chemico-physical (major and trace elements, gases, temperature, ...) data provides the basis of a working assumption on a flow and mixing model in which three different hydrogeological subsystems were distinguished : a surface subsystem comprising cold infiltration waters of a bicarbonate-calcium and a sulfate-calcium type; a subsurface subsystem constituted by the fissured Liassic calcareous terrains comprising part of the infiltrated waters which intermingle with much warmer waters of a sodium-chloride type originating from a subsystem located at a great depth. By means of geochemical indicators, a depth of nearly 4000 m has been estimated.
Such a model, in agreement with geological evidence and reported by some recent works showing that halite deposits are probable at great depths, could be generalized to other hydrothermal systems occurring within the framework of the French Western Alps in a comparable structural context (thrust front of the external metamorphic massifs; "Briançonnais" thrust front).

A simulation model of organic carbon movement was designed for a river polluted by piggery wastes.
The physical dynamics of this model, as described in this paper, include a hydrodynamic component inspired by a Saint Venant's model coupled with a transport model based on the classical advection-diffusion equation. The model is applied to unidirectional, non-uniform, unsteady flow conditions.
The equations were solved by a finite difference method using implicit schemes. The parameters of the equation were adjusted to fit flow conditions determined with a rhodamine dye tracer.
When applied to the dissolved organic carbon transport in the Albenche river, the model showed that the distribution of organic carbon in space and in time was due to physical processes only. The differences in concentration between the observed and the expected values in the downstream station could represent the consumption of benthic biotic organic carbon.

Comparison of fissural, isotopic and hydrochemical data constitutes an approach to geothermal phenomena which has several consequences. The examples which are given are taken from a present regional tectonic context which is characteristic of a drawing close of the African and the European plates. Its maximum horizontal stress is of a N-S SE trend. Consequently the fissural trends EW to ENE - NSW existing on the three areas under survey would play no major role in groundwater flows and rising of deep C.O. Such a significant role would be probably played by the joining of NS to NW trends, which at present act in extension (N-S fractures) or with transverse movements.
They are found either at the gazeous and carbonic outlets (bare basement) or in the neighbourhood of these outlets (less than 300 m distant) located in the covering (thickness 300 m). It can thus be assumed that the fissuration is at present continuous between the covering and the basement in the N-S direction. This assumption is in agreement with the present stress field and the associated deformations. So all these data make it possible to emphasize on one hand the role of some fractural directions in groundwater flow according to the regional sismotectonic context, on the other the origins of the waters as well as their relative ages and lastly the origin of the CO2 which can be mixed (biogenic and from the mantle) or infracrusted. Such an approach has several consequences connected with :
1) geothermal phenomena : the water temperature and the survey of the hydrothermal flows can be considered as a preliminary survey for deep local hydraulic investigation,
2) seismic risks : the fact that the dissolved gas (i.e. CO2) derives its origin from the mantle is an indicator of such risks,
3) The survey of deep geological accidents in particular within deep sedimentary caver : a methodology for the study of this particular type of waters which can efficiently be applied elsewhere is thus created.

There are about 50,000 to 60,000 chemical compounds used for technical purposes. Some are toxic and the discharge of these substances in the environment can be a threat to the balance of aquatic ecosystems and to human health. Several lists of dangerous substances, also called major chemical pollutants, have been drawn up by various national or international bodies such as the EPA in the United States, the EEC in Europe or the World Health Organization (WHO). The need to protect the aquatic environment and human health has also led to the establishment of standards and of quality criteria for natural and drinking water subject to these chemical contaminants.
There are several sources of pollution, punctual sources such as urban and industrial effluents and diffuse sources such as run-offs from agricultural land and urban areas and atmosphere fallout. Various biogeochemical processes determine the mechanisms by which organic pollutants are transported and transformed in the aquatic environment. Bioaccumulation in living organisms represents an important aspect of their behaviour.
A first assessment of the quality of continental waters (rivers, lakes and groundwater) is made by examining the data collected by the international GEMS/WATER surveillance network carried out by two United Nations Agencies, WHO and UNEP. Other sources of information, published in the literature, were also used in order to determine the level of concentration of different groups of organic pollutants found in natural waters and in drinking water. Most of the data collected come from a limited number of industrial countries : North America, Europe and Japan. There is a serious lack of informations concerning the quality of continental waters in numerous countries in Africa, South America and Asia. At present, the procedure of global chemical pollution surveillance is far from satisfactory.

Contrôle et conduite des digesteurs anaérobies
R. Moletta
p. 265–293
Utilization of anaerobic digestion in waste treatment is an extremely interesting method. Its main advantages are in its low energy requirement, a production of methane readily utilizable "in situ" and a very reduced production of microorganisms.
The lack of knowledge concerning this process led formerly to more or less serious breakdowns owing mainly to the organic overload of various origins. They created a certain suspicion towards this process and delayed its development.
For the past fifteen years, research has been carried out on the microbial ecosystem, its kinetics and its modelling. It has permitted to determine the different parameters involved and the values necessary to obtain good operating conditions.
These parameters can be divided into two categories : those indicating whether the recommended operating conditions are fulfilled, and those enabling to control the microbial ecosystem.
The former concern
- in the effluent : the pH, the COD concentration, the suspended solid content and the flow rate;
- the temperature, the liquid level, the recirculating flows and the volatile suspended solid (VSS) content (for the completely stirred tank reactor - CSTR -) in the digestor.
The parameters thanks to which the kinetics of the microbial ecosystem can be controlled are :
- for the liquid phase : the pH, the volatil fatty acids (VFA), the bicarbonate and the COD concentrations;
- for the gas phase : the flow rate, the gas composition (CO2/ CH4) and the hydrogen content.
Variations in certain of these parameters (VFA, H2) are direcly related to changes in the microorganism activity or result from the variation in factors such as the gas composition, the pH, or the bicarbonate. In the expression of the variations in the microbial ecosystem these parameters are less important.
In most cases, these parameters can be measured by sensors which allow an optimal automatic control of the digestor.
The development of an optimal automatic control should improve the performance of methane-producing conditions, especially at starting point.
The choice of one or several parameters for an automatic control depends on several factors, such as its sensivity to variations and its response time to an organic overload.
The last two factors were measured for different parameters after an experimental overload of a 6 liter anaerobic filter used in the treatment of wine vinasse.
Partial hydrogen pressure and gas flow rate were the first parameters to change. The variation coefficients varied around 50 and 4 to 5 respectively. In liquid the variation in pH and total organic carbon (TOC), which, like COD, indicates the amount of organic matter, occured later. In our study, the pH varied little and TOC was multiplied by 3. The variations in gas composition, in VFA concentration and alkalinity due to bicarbonate were the last factors detected.
Utilization of hydrogen as a controlling parameter is therefore interesting because its concentration varies rapidly and more largely than the one of the other parameters. Moreover, it is much involved in the microbial ecosystem equilibrium.
When the controlling parameters reach critical values, operating conditions have to be modified to restore a good microbial activity.
The process can be modified :
- by the reduction or the stopping of the input rate;
- by the addition of a base;
- by the recycling of methane atone;
- or by the increase in the microorganism concentration in CSTR.
The nature and significance of these actions are defined on the basis of the data collected by the recording device. These values can be processes by black-box type algorithms, or by simple models derived from cognitive models. At present, research in adaptative control is in progress.
In these algorithms, we consider the optimal criteria leading to a stable process with either a maximum methane production, or a minimal COD (or TOC) in the output, or with both.

Many recent prospective epidemiological studies (CABELLI, 1980 - EPA - of different marine waters, DUFOUR, 1984 - EPA - of lake waters, and CAREPS, 1987 - FRANCE - of a river water), give the same concordant results : the main health risks linked with bathing in waters contamined by municipal wastewater discharges are gastro-intestinal illnesses.
In all studies, a consistent correlation was established between this kind of disease and fecal streptococci concentration but there are few or no correlations with the two parameters (fecal and total coliforms), used at present, to establish the required quality of recreational waters.
Consequently, fecal streptococci, usually considered as fecal contamination indicators are also health risk indicators and they should be used as parameters for the assessment of pollution of natural waters, for the efficiency of treatment processes and for the quality of recreational waters. Obviously, regulations in European countries are at present based on the control of the level of fecal contamination and this is correct if occasional risks due to eventual diseases among populations are to be avoided; in fact, the systematic health risk must be taken into account and hence fecal streptococci should be used as a controlling parameter.
Guide and imperative values of the European directive are not justified by epidemiological studies : rates of objective gastro-intestinal complaints in populations of bathers, are at the same level (around 15 p 1000), for the quide value in fecal streptococci (100 FS/100 ml) and the imperative value in fecal coliforms (2000 FC/100 ml). Corresponding rates in populations of "non bathers" are around 4.5 p 1000 (a French study). Moreover for the same levels of differents parameters these rates are not the same in marine waters and in freshwaters. The same values for the two types of waters are questionable.
Skin diseases constitute another health risk, but the different studies have brought no definite answers to the problems of the sources of the diseases : these sources could be wastewaters of domestic origin, interhuman contamination during bathing or the natural characteristics of the water, such as the presence of particular germs. A relevant controlling parameter for this kind of health risk has net yet been found.
