Eric Voegelin’s philosophy of history is both intellectually illuminating and evocative. It is also voluminous. Therefore, this essay selectively discusses some of the main themes of his mature thought. It begins with an exploration of what Voegelin found to be meaningful patterns in history. Then it elucidates the connection between his discovery of such patterns and the underlying theory of consciousness that he developed earlier, but which acted as a catalyst for his later thought. Voegelin’s concern to account for the emergence of historical consciousness was a key part of his philosophy of history, and is discussed here. Finally, the essay concludes with a brief meditation on the significance of his symbol, “universal humanity.”

La philosophie de l’histoire d’Eric Voegelin est à la fois intellectuellement éclairante et évocatrice. Elle est également volumineuse. Par conséquent, cet essai discute sélectivement certains des principaux thèmes de sa pensée mature. Il commence par une exploration de ce que Voegelin a trouvé être des modèles significatifs dans l’histoire. Ensuite, il élucide le lien entre sa découverte de tels modèles et la théorie sous-jacente de la conscience qu’il a développée plus tôt, mais qui a agi comme un catalyseur pour sa pensée ultérieure. Le souci de Voegelin de rendre compte de l’émergence de la conscience historique était un élément clé de sa philosophie de l’histoire, et est discuté ici. Il existe une tension épistémologique profonde, voire un dilemme, au coeur de la philosophie de l‘histoire. L’histoire en tant que science humaine vise à expliquer les événements du passé, mais, en tant que discours narratif, elle se prête mal à une justification épistémologique formelle. Ce dilemme semble artificiel dans la mesure où nous donnons sens aux événements de la vie et du passé en les insérant dans des récits. Nous recourons spontanément au récit pour expliquer ce qui s’est passé. Nous considérons la narrativité comme un « jeu de langage » qui s’insère dans une variété de formes de vie et dont nous faisons usage en conjonction avec d’autres jeux de langage en vue de comprendre les actions et les événements. Si l’on s’inquiète de la contamination d’un présumé logos par le mythos, nous revisitions ici la distinction aristotélicienne entre le récit poétique et le récit historique pour appuyer l’idée que l’historiographie peut et doit rester narrative, et que la narrativité qui l’anime ne relève pas de l’artifice, mais bien de l’explication.

There exists an epistemological tension, seen as a dilemma, in current philosophy of history. History as a human science aims to explain past events, but as a narrative discourse, it seems ill fitted for any kind of formal epistemological justification. This dilemma seems artificial in a way inasmuch as we give meaning to the events of our lives by inserting them in narratives. We spontaneously use narrative to explain what has happened. We consider narrativity here as a range of “language-games” bound to a variety of forms of life, and on which we rely to understand actions and events. If we are worried about the contamination of the logos by the mythos, we revisit the Aristotelian distinction between poetic and historical narratives to support the idea that history can remain in narrative discourse and that narrativity participates in explanation and understanding.

« Le passé est-il intelligible autrement que comme persistant dans le présent ? » s’interrogeait Paul Ricoeur dans un chapitre de Temps et récit. Le philosophe français introduisait ainsi un auteur encore bien méconnu en monde francophone : Robin G. Collingwood. À l’heure du cancel culture, l’oeuvre de Collingwood nous invite pourtant à questionner la relation entre passé et présent de manière originale, et à suivre une piste d’écriture de l’histoire qui n’est pas sans intérêt aujourd’hui. Face au déboulonnage actuel du passé, cet article a donc aussi pour objectif de faire connaitre le parcours de ce philosophe britannique, avant d’aborder son « idée de l’histoire » et d’analyser le concept central de ré-effectuation.

«Is the past intelligible other than as persisting in the present?» asked Paul Ricoeur in a chapter of Time and Narrative. The French philosopher thus introduced an author still little known in the French-speaking world: Robin G. Collingwood. At the time of the Cancel Culture however, Collingwood’s work invites us to question the relationship between past and present in an original way, and to follow a path of writing history that is not without interest today. In the face of the current debunking of the past, this article therefore also aims at making known the career of this British philosopher, before approaching his “idea of history” and analyzing the central concept of re-effectuation.

This article presents views of universal history taken from the Bible and from two Christian authors. Those religious and theological interpretations of history are characterized by the concern to highlight a factor that is transcendent. This factor is seen as the overall meaning that underpins human existence in our world.

Ces interprétations religieuses et théologiques se caractérisent par un souci de mettre en lumière un facteur transcendant. Ce facteur apparaît comme le sens d’ensemble qui sous-tend l’expérience humaine dans notre monde.

L’apport des théories sur la mémoire sociale renouvelle considérablement l’approche de l’historiographie chrétienne, en particulier l’oeuvre lucanienne (Évangile et Actes des apôtres). Elles expliquent comment, après la crise des années 60 où la chrétienté a perdu ses figures apostoliques de référence, la production d’écrits est devenue une nécessité en vue de stabiliser l’identité des communautés croyantes. L’auteur ad Theophilum rédige une historiographie kérygmatique, où le kérygme devient récit et où la tradition apostolique fait histoire. On décèle ici le passage d’une religion de conversion (Paul) à une religion de tradition. Trois indices peuvent être relevés : la gestion du titre d’apôtre, le statut normatif conféré à l’enseignement apostolique et la figure de Paul érigée en modèle.

Theories on social memory have greatly contributed to renew how to approach Christian historiography, particularly Luke’s work (Gospel and Acts). They explain how, after the crisis of the sixties, which saw the disappearance of many apostolic figures, writing became imperative in order to stabilize the believing communities’ identity. The author of Ad Theophilum writes a kerygmatic historiography, in which the kerygma forms the narrative and apostolic tradition becomes history. Passage from a religion of conversion (Paul’s) to a religion of tradition can be detected. Three hints point to that: the way the title of apostle is used, the normative status given to apostolic teaching and the figure of Paul presented as a model.

The temptation to radical apocalypticism has plagued the Church in every age since the time of the apostles. Yet some moments, such as the recent COVID-19 crisis, are especially ripe for such tendencies. In the 13^th century, Thomas Aquinas had to confront radical apocalypticism on two fronts: from the followers of Joachim of Fiore and from the mendicants’ opponents among the secular priests at the University of Paris. These confrontations gave Aquinas occasion to articulate a balanced approach to eschatology, rooted in Scripture and the tradition of the Fathers. In this paper, I examine Aquinas’ critique of radical eschatology in the context of a broader examination of his theology of history. Aquinas’ sober analysis, I maintain, can serve us well in confronting our own struggles with radical eschatologies.

La tentation apocalyptique radicale a tourmenté l’Église à toutes les époques depuis le temps des apôtres. Néanmoins, certains moments, comme la crise récente du COVID-19, sont particulièrement propices à de telles tendances. Au XIII^e siècle, Thomas d’Aquin doit affronter des courants apocalyptiques radicaux sur deux fronts : celui des partisans de Joachim de Flore et celui des opposants aux mendiants parmi les prêtres séculiers de l’Université de Paris. Ces confrontations donnent à Thomas d’Aquin l’occasion d’articuler une approche équilibrée de l’eschatologie, enracinée dans l’Écriture et la tradition des Pères. Dans cet article, j’étudie la critique qu’il fait de l’eschatologie radicale dans le contexte d’un examen plus large de sa théologie de l’histoire. L’analyse sobre de Thomas d’Aquin, je le maintiens, peut nous être très utile pour confronter nos propres luttes aux eschatologies radicales.

Cet article vise à répondre aux questions suivantes : Comment Qohélet conçoit-il les rapports entre le monde humain et le monde animal ? S’agit-il d’un rapport qui met l’accent sur les différences entre ces deux mondes ou sur leurs ressemblances ? Ces rapports sont-ils envisagés sous l’angle d’une coexistence pacifique ou conflictuelle ? Entre les humains et les animaux, y a-t-il un rapport de cohabitation ou de domination ? Les réponses à ces questions permettront de découvrir, d’une part, que les frontières entre le monde animal et le monde humain sont poreuses et, d’autre part, qu’il existe des rapports de domination dans chacun des deux mondes, et entre ces deux mondes, ces rapports n’étant d’ailleurs pas étrangers à la théologie de Qohélet.

This article aims at answering the following questions: How does Qohelet conceive of the relationship between the human world and the animal world? Is it a relationship that emphasizes the differences between these two worlds or their similarities? Are these relations envisaged from the angle of peaceful or conflictual coexistence? Between humans and animals, is there a relationship of cohabitation or domination? The answers to these questions will make it possible to discover, on the one hand, that the borders between the animal world and the human world are porous and, on the other hand, that there are relations of domination in each of the two worlds, and between these two worlds, these relations being moreover not foreign to the theology of Qohelet.
