La pathologie de l'état limite (borderline) est un défi pour le champ de la santé mentale à cause de sa dynamique complexe et des difficultés de traitement. James F. Masterson est un leader et un pionnier dans le diagnostic et le traitement du trouble limite du soi (borderline disorder of the self). Son travail est basé sur 30 ans d'expérience clinique et de recherches intensives intégrées à une synthèse des plus importants concepts psychodynamiques incluant la théorie du développement, la relation d'objet et les concepts du soi. Sa théorie spécifique et sa technique psychothérapeutique se sont avérées particulièrement efficaces dans la compréhension et le traitement de ce syndrome controversé qui est au centre des préoccupations psychothérapeutiques.
