RÉSUMÉ

La réadaptation, en santé mentale, s'est éloignée progressivement de son objectif de maximisation du fonctionnement individuel, pour s'intéresser plutôt aux moyens qui pourraient aider les malades mentaux à interagir assez bien avec leur environnement et gagner en autonomie dans leur vie quotidienne (Wing, 1980). La réadaptation est alors apparue comme un processus plutôt que comme un événement (Sheppard, 1984). En d'autres mots, la réadaptation n'est pas simplement un traitement unique - ou une suite donnée de traitements - mais une intervention qui visera, souvent à plus long terme, à maintenir le fonctionnement social et à soutenir l'adaptation. Ignorer cette distinction ou refuser de l'aligner sur le principe directeur de la pratique de la réadaptation psychiatrique mène à une action mal orientée ou pire, à une série de rituels vides de sens qui renforcent la dépendance (Watts et Bennett, 1983; Brandon, 1991). Tous les professionnels de la réadaptation psychiatrique devraient donc se poser cette question primordiale: comment utiliser ses habiletés pour amorcer et soutenir ce processus?

ABSTRACT

Increasingly the purposes and focus of mental health rehabilitation has turned away from a concern to maximise the functioning of individuals towards an interest in helping people with mental needs to interact sufficiently well with their environment so as to gain independence in everyday life (Wing, 1980). Rehabilitation is to be seen, therefore, as a process rather than an event (Sheppard, 1984). In other words, rehabilitation not simply a single treatment (or fixed series of treatment) but often will be a longer term intervention to maintain social functioning and support adaptation. A failure to understand this distinction or to translate it into guiding principle which informs all aspects of professional practice in psychiatric rehabilitation results in misdirected effort (or, worse, in a series of empty rituals which reinforce dependence) (Watts and Bennett, 1993; Brandon, 1991). A central question for all the caring professions engaged in psychiatric rehabilitation, therefore, is how to utilize their skills to enable and support this process.
