Qu’est-ce qu’un point d’orgue ? Le présent article part de cette question apparemment anodine. Il analyse à cette occasion la structure ontologique de l’oeuvre musicale, constituée à la fois d’idéalité (son signe écrit : la partition) et de présence (le moment de sa réalisation instrumentale). Il s’appuie ensuite sur un exemple précis, le premier point d’orgue de la Sonate D960 de Schubert, et sur l’écoute comparée de trois interprétations enregistrées de cette sonate. Il met en perspective l’analyse du point d’orgue en regard de la forme sonate ici déployée par Schubert. Cet exercice lui permet d’étayer la thèse suivante : l’avènement de l’oeuvre repose sur la temporalisation de son inscription, la projection du signe écrit en son temporalisé; le signe (ce point d’orgue par excellence) est donc nécessairement un signe-pour-un-geste, et en appelle à la subjectivité d’un interprète pour achever la réalité qu’il n’a pu circonscrire entièrement dans son injonction.
Abstract
This article begins with the seemingly inconsequential question: “What is a fermata?” It then discusses the ontological structure of a musical work, which combines “ideal” (a work’s signifying text: the score) and “presence” (the moment in which a work is realized by an act of performance). The first fermata in Schubert’s Piano Sonata D960 is examined in this context by comparative listening to three recorded performances, allowing for an analysis of the fermata and of its place within the particular sonata structure deployed by the composer in this work. This exercise leads to the following assertion: the realisation of a work is dependent on temporality in the rendering of its text. A sign (in this case, one particularly pertinent fermata) necessarily assumes the value of an act requiring the performer’s subjectivity to render what can only partially be consigned to the work’s text.
