L’oeuvre autobiographique de Gary-Ajar constitue un unicum dans le panorama de la littérature française contemporaine : en travaillant à la frontière des genres, l’auteur arrive à réaliser un déracinement total afin de mettre en doute la validité d’une identité stable, miroir d’un sujet défini. À travers une analyse de l’incertitude formelle qui marque La promesse de l’aube, La nuit sera calme, Pseudo et Vie et mort d’Émile Ajar, il s’agira de voir comment Romain Gary arrive à déplacer l’intérêt du lecteur de questions comme l’authenticité ou la véridicité de l’écrit et à dépasser la partition entre document et fiction, pour accomplir son « rêve d’un roman total, à la fois personnage et auteur ». En s’attaquant à ce qu’il considère comme les tendances intimistes de son époque, Gary oblitère le caractère narcissique propre à l’écriture autobiographique pour donner le jour à une forme qui permet au sujet de s’engendrer.
Abstract
Gary-Ajar’s autobiographical work constitutes a unicum in the panorama of contemporary French literature: by working on the borderline of genres, the author manages to accomplish a total uprooting with the intention of casting doubt on the validity of a stable identity, mirror of a definite subject. Using an analysis of the formal uncertainty that marks Promise at Dawn, The Night Will Be Calm, Pseudo and The Life and Death of Émile Ajar, this article aims to show how Romain Gary succeeds in diverting the reader’s interest from issues such as authenticity and veracity of writing and crossing the boundary between document and fiction to realize his “dream of a total novel, at once character and author.” By challenging what he sees as the intimist tendencies of his day, Gary obliterates the narcissistic character of autobiographical writing to give birth to a form that allows the subject to self-create.
