Volume 7, numéro 2, automne 1999 Silence !

FR :

Essential silence to a new listening. Outside the noise, the rumbling of amodern civilization, the daily uproar, there exists a path leading to thelistening of humanity snuggled deep down in every being. A solitary silence,a shared silence, a silence loaded with meaning which takes us in theopposite direction from that which pulls us apart. Words to be read insilence in order to restore spaces where a better communication goes handin hand with being more silent.

Silence is not just the absence of sound and noise. It can also bear witnessto an absence of thought, “a desolation from within”. Hanna Arendtsuggested so. The present pondering is elaborated based on her reflections. The perpetrators of the Shoah and the Goulag make us re-think humannature and its conduct. When the silence of some justifies the victimizationof others, the only solution is to break the silence.

There is nothing more silent than a painting. A long evolution has lead tothese voluntary silences. We intend here to trace back this movement, fromthe “talkative” religious iconography, to the work of the surrealists, toabstract art up to contemporary painting. From the window on the worldto the painting-wall, artists had to fight hard so that their art would notserve the interests of the powerful, but would lead to silence and a requestioning.
