Abstract
On November 17, 1980, during an encounter with the representatives of the Jewish community in Mainz (Germany), Pope John Paul II described the dialogue between Jews and Catholics as a « meeting between the people of God of the Old Covenant, never revoked by God, and that of the New Covenant ». What did this remark change ? How did it impact on further words and deeds of John Paul II and those who succeeded him ? The author first presents the main texts of the New Testament and of Early Christianity on which the traditional thinking of the Church on the Jewish people was based. He then examines the words and deeds of Pope John Paul II and of his two successors, Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. In the final part, he points to the reception of this declaration in various areas.
