Through a close analysis of the temporal shifts in Jess Dobkin’s The Magic Hour, this article considers how a refusal to submit to a gendered expectation to rush, might offer not only a means of illuminating the disciplining logic of normative temporality, but also provide a performative space of healing and resistance. Grounded in theories on queer trauma and queer temporality, Zisman Newman introduces a concept of the “lesbian rush,” to consider how those with less support must multitask and rush to achieve economic stability and perceived success. Part of the work that naming this rush commits to is revealing how conceptualizations of “straight time”—a temporal logic invested in reproductive futurities and naturalized milestones—is both heterosexist and patriarchal; that is to say, straight time is not just straight, but also androcentric. Considering Dobkin’s experiences in the theatre industry, alongside the production’s focus on “trauma and transformation,” this article discusses how expectations to keep pace may be combated through performance. Grappling with gendered systemic inequities which shape our experiences of time, alongside personal narratives of trauma, this article tells a story of one performance over and over again: The story of an artist; the story of slowing down; the story of the past and future melting into the present; and the story of repetition. Each story refuses to rush the narrative, coming back to the beginning of the production and taking a new perspective on what it means to refuse the lesbian rush.

Luttant contre les inégalités systémiques qui façonnent nos expériences du temps et présentant des récits personnels de traumatismes, Zisman Newman raconte l’histoire d’une performance qui se répète sans cesse. Starting from applied theatre scholar Adrian Jackson’s assertion that a combination of seduction and provocation is crucial to the success of authentic intervention in theatre for social change, this article looks outside of traditional Forum Theatre for a model of this practice. Using Danya Buonastella and Nina Gilmour’s bouffon clown show Death Married My Daughter as its case study, this article draws on scholarship in the areas of applied theatre and feminist theory to examine what audience engagement and intervention might look like in the unsettling times in which we live. The performers’ use of bouffon seduces and provokes their audience in order to elicit empathy for the characters, expose the presence of neoliberal and postfeminist ideologies in women’s lives, and implicate their audience in a project of socio-political change. The article concludes by suggesting what applied theatre practitioners could learn from theatre that does not require direct intervention in the action on stage but nevertheless pushes the audience out of a comfortable, passive spectatorship.

Director Robertson Davies’s 1949 production of The Taming of the Shrew with the Peterborough Little Theatre won the Louis Jouvet Trophy for best direction at the Dominion Drama Festival in Toronto, garnering critical praise as the DDF’s first full-length Shakespearean play. Davies’s performance copy for this production has recently been discovered in his personal book collection, donated to Queen’s University’s W. D. Jordan Special Collections and Music Library. Never previously examined or transcribed, this text incorporates director’s notes and critiques, music cues, blocking, omissions, and alterations, offering invaluable insights into Davies’s 1949 Elizabethan interpretation of this play. Reviving Davies’s annotations reveals new information about this specific production, one that challenged mid-twentieth century Canadian staging conventions. PLT’s Shrew emerges as a lighthearted and detail-oriented comic romp invested in historicity, its Commedia dell’Arte flavour likely imported from Tyrone Guthrie’s 1939 Old Vic production in which Davies acted. The mentorship model that Davies implemented with PLT he replicates in his first novel, Tempest-Tost (1951), where he draws directly upon his Shrew notes and directorial experience as well. Revising the “maturation myth” narrative of Canadian theatre, McKague’s study of Davies’s play situates nonprofessional theatre as intrinsic to the fabric and history of Canadian culture.

In exploring Still Stands the House by Gwen Pharis Ringwood, Scott considers how a particularly gendered experience of the Canadian landscape finds expression in a murderous act by a woman. The act of murder can be a powerful theatrical device for reflecting, on stage, a Canadian reaction to the experience of being embedded in a hostile environment. The play provides a fascinating case study for the convergence of gender roles, violence, geography, and climate, and springs from the perspectives and concerns of Alberta settler-colonial farm families in the early twentieth century. The theories of Northrop Frye and Margaret Atwood have been challenged by subsequent critics and by the changing realities of Canadian society and literature, and many of their assumptions thoroughly problematized by colonial and Indigenous studies. But, keeping these crucial criticisms in mind, Scott argues that some of Frye’s and Atwood’s key concepts can still prove applicable to the imaginative world of Ringwood’s play, and are therefore useful for understanding its impact and continuing status in the Canadian dramatic canon. By realistically evoking the hardship of the time and the isolation of the settler farmer lifestyle, Ringwood makes the harsh environment an active character in the drama and, by linking the violence of the environment with the violent act of her character, Hester, Ringwood suggests something intrinsically brutal behind the rhetoric of the pioneer spirit and the settler experience in Canada.

La pièce de Ringwood s’avère un outil fascinant pour observer la convergence des rôles sexo-spécifiques, de la violence, de la géographie et du climat; elle puise ses origines dans les points de vue et les préoccupations de familles d’agriculteurs ayant participé à la colonisation de l’Alberta au début du vingtième siècle. Les théories de Northrop Frye et de Margaret Atwood ont été remises en question par des critiques subséquents et par les réalités changeantes de la société et de la littérature canadiennes, et bien des supposés sur lesquels reposent ces théories ont été problématisés par des chercheurs en études coloniales et autochtones. Sans perdre de vue ces objections cruciales, Scott fait valoir que certains concepts clé mis de l’avant par Frye et Atwood s’appliquent toujours au monde imaginaire de Ringwood et peuvent donc s’avérer utiles lorsqu’il s’agit de comprendre l’impact de la pièce et l’importance qu’elle continue d’avoir au sein du canon théâtral canadien. En représentant de manière réaliste la misère et l’isolement du mode de vie des colons agriculteurs, Ringwood fait de l’environnement hostile un personnage actif de la pièce; en établissant un lien entre la violence de l’environnement et l’acte violent du personnage de Hester, elle laisse entendre qu’une brutalité intrinsèque se cache derrière l’esprit pionnier et l’expérience coloniale au Canada.

In an episode of his satirical television show Nathan for You, comedian Nathan Fielder creates an original theatre production in order to exploit a legal loophole that allows smoking in bars if it is part of a performance. The project begins as a one-off invisible theatre performance but quickly morphs into an experiment in the possibilities and limits of theatre of the real when Fielder re-stages the initial event with actors so the production can be repeatable, and thus marketable as a consistent product. In the “Smokers Allowed” episode, Fielder’s comedic attempts to painstakingly recreate events highlight the inherent ridiculousness of reality-based performances. This Nathan for You episode brings together two related approaches to performance—reality television and reality theatre—that are linked through their focus on reality, but which tend to diverge in content and reception. In doing so, he reveals a double standard in the cultural valuation of reality television and theatre of the real—one that ironically relies on an anti-theatrical bias towards televisual forms. At a time when there is heightened anxiety about what constitutes reality and an increasing concern that all realities are constructed, Fielder’s satire raises a number of pressing questions related to performance and the real, including: How might a satirical, comedic approach to theatre of the real help us understand omissions and biases within this form? How might acknowledging that all reality-based art forms are fundamentally absurd open up this field to new possibilities?

Au début, le spectacle ne doit avoir lieu qu’une seule fois et passer inaperçue, mais la chose a vite fait de se transformer en exploration des possibilités et des limites du théâtre du réel quand Fielder décide de mettre en scène le spectacle initial avec des comédiens de manière à ce qu’il puisse être reproduit et donc commercialisé en tant que produit homogène. Dans l’épisode « Smokers Allowed », les tentatives humoristiques par Fielder de reproduire les événements dans leurs moindres détails soulignent le ridicule inhérent aux performances axées sur la réalité. Cet épisode de Nathan for You regroupe deux approches à la performance—celle de la télé-réalité et du théâtre de la réalité—qui partagent un même souci de la réalité, mais dont le contenu et la réception tendent à diverger. For close to two decades Trey Anthony has carved out a successful career as a published and produced playwright in Canada in a national theatre landscape where few playwrights enjoy sustained success. This is, in part, because Anthony is also an entrepreneur who identified Black women in Canada as a financially viable and lucrative target market and she has consistently self-produced content that is geared specifically to them. This article begins with the production history, critical response, and box office response to Anthony’s play How Black Mothers Say I Love You. It continues with an analysis of the play’s content and characters as representative of staging Black female life and it concludes with a contemplation of what Anthony’s successful cultivation of a Black female audience in Canada suggests about Canadian theatre.
