Abstract
Starting from the premise that the Orient, and thus Orientalism, are textual constructions that provide opportunities for deciphering, this article examines Loranger’s use of the Oriental “haiku” form in its historical context. The “mirror” effect created by his choice of form allows Loranger to set his poetry in a context extending beyond the strict confines of French Canadian literature to connect with a tradition that is very important to him, the literary history of France.
