The purpose of the thesis is to study the common meanings of the Latin word modus in order to explain why the word has enjoyed such extensive use in ail fields of knowledge in the last two thousand years. In Chapter One an important principle concerning the rôle of quantity in the way that man imposes names is discussed. According to Saint Thomas Aquinas, the intellect can not abstract from continuons quantity when naming non-quantitative realities.
