If the coefficients of elasticity of a substance depend upon the temperature, an alteration in the state of strain of a body is accompanied by a change in its temperature. If a body is stiffer at a high temperature than at a low one, then, if the strain is increased there will be an increase in the temperature of the strained body, while if the body is stiffer at a low temperature than at a high one, there will be a fall in the temperature when the strain is increased.
