1909 — An investigation of amygdalin.Résumé
Before a great many experiments had been carried out, however, it became apparent that it was necessary to obtain more data concerning the specific rotation of both the laevo and the racemic amygdalin, as I was not able to check up my rotations with those of other investigators, or at times even with my own. 1909 — Thesis on secondary stresses in bridge trusses induced by riveted joints.Résumé
Munich, Bavaria, in a paper in which he drew the distinction between these stresses and Direct or Primary Stresses. To exemplify the nature and occurence of Secondary Stresses, consider a column of area A, moment of inertia I, supporting a disc of weight W. (Plate I) If the centre of gravity of the disc and column be in the same straight line as in Fig.1, the unit compressive stress in the column equals W/A = F = direct or primary stress.. This unit stress is uniform across the section of the column as designated by the stress diagram a b … Lire la suite

1909 — Metaphysical proofs for the existence of God.Résumé
The existence and nature of God have been the subject matter for the thought of men in most ages. For the demonstration and the explanation of these, Theological and Philosophical writers have put forward many and varying arguments, but with a large proportion of these writings the present paper will not be concerned. 1909 — The correlation and standardization of chemical, physical and microscopical methods of testing iron and steelRésumé
The relation between the chemical composition and heat, or mechanical treatment on the one hand and the microscopic structure on the other, is dealt with at some length in the description of the photomicrographs. The relation between the chemical composition and heat treatment on the one hand, and the mechanical properties on the other, was investigated with important results which are set forth in the account of the tests made on spring steel. 1909 — The evaportion of ice.Résumé
When solids are heated they generally pass into a liquid and then into a gaseous state. Solids may, however, pass directly into a gaseous state without apparently passing through the intermediate stage, that is to say, solids evaporate. It is an established fact that ice and snow gradually disappear, and in the Artic regions where the temperature is always below 0°C, this is the only manner in which evaporation can occur. The process is termed sublimation. [...] Lire la suite
