1910 — The design of a concrete block building with reinforced concrete floors for light manufacturing purposes.Résumé
The building we are about to design will be approximately 15'-0" x 105'-0" inside dimensions of three stories, and will have a reinforced concrete roof with a slope of 3/4" to the foot, the conctrete roof will be covered with slag 5 ply. [...] Lire la suite

1910 — Preliminary report on a portion of the coast of British Columbia and the islands adjacent thereto in the Nanaimo district.Résumé
The most southern portion of the area brought within this report is the mouth of Powell Eiver, which enters the Gulf of Georgia nearly opposite the northern end of Texada Island and sixty-five miles north of the eity of Vancouver. From Powell River, geological mapping was carried northward to the entrance of Kingeome Inlet. [...] Lire la suite

1910 — Absorption and adsorption with reference to the radioactive emanations.Résumé
The word Absorption should be used as the name for the general phenomenon which includes any case of the retention of a liquid within a solid, or of a gas or vapour within a solid or liquid, when there is no apparent evidence of chemical activity. The absorption of gas by a liquid is what is ordinarily known as the solution of the gas by the liquid. The absorption of gas by a solid, sometimes called "occlusion," includes (1) the mechanical retention and adhesion of the gas or vapour in the crevices between particles of the solid, and (2) in … Lire la suite

1910 — Numerical evaluation of elliptic functions.Résumé
In the applications of the elliptic functions and their methods to Geometry, Algebra, and Physics, it is seen that the different problems call for different standard forms of these functions. In a treatment of the properties of the cubic curve, for example, the variables employed are generally the p-function and its argument, so extensively developed by the researches of Weierstrass ; whereas in such problems as, say, the discussion of the form of the surfaces of lightwaves in crystals, the functions sn, en, and dn of Jacobi enter most readily into the analysis. 1910 — The origin and development of resin canals in the coniferae with special reference to the development of thyloses and their correlation with the thylosal strands of the pteridophytes.Résumé
The critical study of the resin passages of the Coniferae was suggested by Prof. D. P. Penhallow as a subject presenting many apparent points of similarity, especially in regard to the appearance of thyloses, and resulted in the investigations detailed in the following pages. At the very outset, however, it may be stated that, although the phenomenon of thyloses was observed to exhibit the same characters and to follow the same general rules as in the Pteridophyta, the canals were found to be structures of an entirely different order, not only as regards their function, but also with reference to … Lire la suite

1910 — The span of attention.Résumé
Although the question as to the Span of Attention has occupied the minds of psychologists for years, it cannot be said that all difference of opinion in regard to it has been removed. There are still, on the one hand, those who maintain that attention can be given to several objects at the same time, and, on the other hand, those who claim that this is impossible, and that instead of being distributed, attention oscillates between the several objects in the field of attentions. 1910 — Clark and Weston standard cells.Résumé
The reproducibility of standard cells has recently become a question of considerable importance. This is chiefly due to the fact that there have been several strong recommendations that the standard cell should be adopted as an international primary electrical standard. rrhis paper deals mainly with the constancy and reproducibility of Clark and Weston cells, and it is hoped that it may throw further light on the value of the cell as one of the legal electrical standards. 1910 — The specific heat of mercury by the water-cooled method of continuous flow calorimetry.Résumé
When two bodies A and B are brought into thermal communication in such a way that no heat is developed or destroyed by chemical, mechanical, electrical or other actions between the bodies, it is assumed that the quantity of heat which A loses is the same as that which B gains and inversely. Since, according to this assumption, calorimetric measurements extend only to quantities of heat imparted to bodies or given out by them, they do not lead to any conclusions as to the total amount of heat contained in a body at a given temperature.
