Work on the distribution of charge and of electric fields in gas discharge tubes has been carried on along various lines since about 1880, three principal methods of experiment being followed, viz: the probe method, cathode ray deflection, and the measurement of the separation of spectral lines in Stark effect photographs. Efferent Nerves Causing Contraction. Schiff (1867) was the first to show that the stimulation of the splanchnic nerves and of the coeliac ganglion causes contraction of the spleen.Bulgak (1877) found that stimulation of anterior root fibres over a considerable extent of the thoracic cord causes contraction of the spleen by way of the great splanchnic nerve. Roy (1881) introduced the plethysmograph for study of splenic contraction. He observed that the organ is normally subject to regular alternation of volume, in virtue of which it acts as a pump. In the field which has to do with the relations between physical properties and chemical structure there has arisen in recent years the conception that in the liquid state molecules are probably orientated under certain conditions. The evidence in favour of the idea is very strong indeed, largely as a result of the work of Langmuir, of Harkins and of N. K. Adam. The present investigation was begun at the suggestion of Dr. Archibald, with the idea of determining the physiological response of the brain to an injury which might conceivably cause coincident concussion and compression. Considerable work has been done on the Stark effect for gases, notably hydrogen and helium, but muoh less is known regarding the Stark effect for metals. The application of such a study to metallic spectra is particularly important and instructive since by its aid much light may be thrown on the series relationships of a particular metal.
