Although the secretory effect of the cervical sympathetic nerve on the submaxillary gland of the dog was established almost seventy-five years ago by Czermak, at the present time its functional relationship is still indefinitely defined. There is no doubt that the peculiar action of the sympathetic nerve made investigation of its function difficult and led to the formulation of several hypotheses to explain its action on the secretory apparatus of the salivary glands. The small separations in the fine structure of the Balmer lines prevents any close analysis of the Stark effect for hydrogen lines of single frequency. Details of Stark displacements and patterns must be gathered from analyses of more complex spectra. It was first observed in helium that sharp and principal series lines were displaced very little in comparison with diffuse lines. Many theories of the cause of striations in gases have been put forth by various authors (1). The early theories entirely neglected any effect which the walls of the tube had on the discharge. In the more recent attempts (2) at explaining the distribution of potential and the striated positive column, the experimental results of Brose (3) are generally accepted and used as a basis for comparing theory with experiment. The research work described in this thesis involved three distinct experimental problems; the preparation of pure hydrogen peroxide, the measurement of the dielectric constant of ethereal solutions of hydrogen peroxide and an investigation of the accuracy of the resonance method when used for the measurement of the dielectric constant of slightly conducting solutions. The densities of the different ethereal solutions were required and also the dielectric constants of the three component system, ether, water and hydrogen peroxide were measured and compared with the dielectric constant of hydrogen peroxide in ether. It has the greatest physiological activity of any of the known amines, producing marked toxic symptoms when given to an animal, and yet it is derived readily from the harmless amino acid histidine, present in nearly all proteins. Since its discovery by Thenard in 1818, hydrogen peroxide has been extensively used as an oxidizing agent for organic compounds. Its chief advantage, when so employed, is the absence of all decomposition products, except water, when oxidation is complete. The relation of the Cyclic acetals towards the carbohydrates, anhydro sugars and polysaccharides, has·been repeatedly pointed out by Hibbert and co-workers.
