1935 — The nature of adsorption on cellulosic materials from heat of wetting and dielectric constant measurements.Résumé
The nature of water adsorption on cellulose has been the subject of considerable controversy. It was hoped that further information regarding the system cellulose - water would be obtained by measuring the heats of wetting and the dielectric constants of cellulose containing varying amounts of adsorbed water. An experimental technic not previously applied to heat of wetting measurements was used. [...] Lire la suite

1935 — The action of ammonia on V - benzoyl butyric ester.Résumé
It was of interest to prepare and study thesimplest member of the series, Y-benzoylbutyronitrile (I) and to learn what connection, if any, there was between the degree of substitution and the course of the reaction. Nitrites A and D, for example, on bromination gave either bromopyridines (six membered rings) or open chain substitution products that readily lost the elements of hydrogen bromide to yield cyclopropanes (three membered rings). 1935 — The romantic and realistic in the contemporary British and American drama.Résumé
Any drama may contain elements of both the realistic and romantic. In one respect it may deal with life as it is inactuality; in another, it may turn its back upon life altogether. The characters an author creates, for example, may bethe normal men and women of everyday life: they are realistic; he may, however, put these characters through a series of eventsof adventure and passion that commonplace people rarely encounter the adventures of a D'Artagnan or a Count of Monte Cristo: that is romantic. An author may choose to point out an idea or teach a lesson derived from or … Lire la suite

1935 — Sir William Davenant and the 17th century theatre.Résumé
This thesis, while not attempting to place any false emphasis upon the importance of the dramatic work of Sir William Davenant, nevertheless aims at putting such stress upon his effect on English drama as seems to be justified by the scope of his work. There is also some attempt made to relate the influences of the period upon Davenant, to evaluate the character of the man himself, and to defend him from false criticism both of his work and his methods. 1935 — Anterior Pituitary and Fat Metabolism.Résumé
Obesity, by definition, is a condition characterized by the accumulation and diffuse distribution of fatin excess of what is normal. Obviously obesity can result only from a persistent positive energy balance - an excessfood intake over that normally disposed of by the body. Whether or not this positive energy balance - the lack of adjustment of intake to expenditure of energy - is due to some endocrine disturbance has been a question of longstanding. [...] Lire la suite

1935 — Some recent tendencies in the short story (1914-1934).Résumé
The short story represents one of the most interesting paradoxes in literature; for while it is one of the oldest of literary forms, it is also one of the most recent. The art of brief narration is as old as the Book of "Ruth," the "Cupid and Psyche" of Apuleius, "The Matron of Ephesus" of Petronius, and "The Pardoner's Tale" of Chaucer; and yet it is as new as Poe and Maupassant, as Chekhov and Katherine Mansfield, as Anderson and Hemingway; as new, in fact, as the latest product of the experimental magazine. 1935 — The structure and properties of some unsaturated fatty acids, esters and related compounds.Résumé
Polymerization processes have been the subject of a great deal of research partlcularly with regard to the chemistry of rubber, poly-saccharides and other naturally occurring substances of high molecular weight. Such studies have concerned themselves chiefly with the polymerization of materials containing conjugated double bonds, such as butadiene and isoprene in rubber chemistry or with materials containingone or more functional groups (hydroxyl, carboxyl,. oxide, etc.) as exemplified in studies of polysaccharides and synthetic resins. The polymerization of unsaturated aliphatic acids and their esters have curiously enough received relatively little attention although complex mixtures such as linseed and chinawood oils have been … Lire la suite

This phenomenon, which is termed'dissociation' for reasons stated below, has been studied ina certain group of acid-fast bacteria - the Mycobacteria. Lire la suite

The world for the past five years has presented a curious spectacle. Each nation has been desperately trying to give away its goods by bounties mn exports, depreciation of the currency and a lowering of the general wage-scale while at the same time endeavouring to stop the incoming flow of goods across its frontiers by means of quotas, sanitary regularions and ever-mounting tariffs. The net result of all thi s has been a definitely poorer world. [...] Lire la suite

Impressionism in criticism has been subjected to much vague thinking and, in consequence, to vaguer utterance. It is too often assumed by critics who ought to know better, that impressionistic criticism, an orchidaceous bloom of the decadence, was transplanted to England from the cafe's of Montmartre and Montparnasse during the Eighteen Eighties; thatfor a time, it poured out its pale and exotic life in the aesthetic hot-house known as the "Beardsley Period;" and that it drooped and withered in the year 1895 in the harsh blast of Philistinism that followed the trial of Oscar Wilde. The internal photoelectric current in rocksalt crystals previously irradiated with ß and Y rays has been studied. In these crystals a reverse current flows when the crystal is illuminated, without an external field, shortly after the passageof a photocurrent. This reverse current has been shown to be an ordinary photoelectric current due to the back voltage. [...] Lire la suite
