1948 — An Attempt to Locate Steroids in Tissues with Special Emphasis on The Distribution of Radio-Iodo-Estradiol in Cancer-Susceptible Mice.
    Résumé

[...] This present work is a contribution toward the solution of the problem of the "intermediary metabolism" of steroids. Of the two methodsused, histochemical and radioactive, the latter was by far the most productive. Even when some of the results were not up to expectations, the field has been cleared for further progress. [...]  Lire la suite

1948 — A study of the effect of botulinum toxin on the transmission of nerve impulses.
    Résumé

[...] Since the latest evidence indicates that the toxicity in botulism is due to a decrease in the production of acetylcholine by motor end plates and parasympathetic nerve endings with the toxin having no direct effect on the muscle or conduction of nerve impulses through the nerve trunk itself, it was decided to attempt to further test this assumption and to determine the mechanism by which the decrease is brought about. Résumé

A method is described for using a b-ray spectrometer to measure the energies and intensities of the Y-rays emitted at the instant of capture of a thermal neutron by a nucleus. The method is applicable to very weak neutron capturers provided that they are available in large quantities, as well as to strong neutron capturers. Experiments were performed in which the capture Y-ray spectra of carbon, a weak capturer, and cadmium, a strong capturer, were observed. [...]  Lire la suite

1948 — The morphological effects of alloxan injection and the effect of insulin in alloxan diabetes in the rabbit.
    Résumé

[...] I wish to state here that I am only interested in the purely pancreatic factors, if any, in alloxan diabetes. It has been said bfrequently that the endocrine pancreas, besides producing insulin, may produce another hormone which, in turn, might produce hyjerglycaemia, or a fat-metabolizing hormone or anti-ketogenie hormone. Most of those who have worked on this subject have a tendency to consider that the alpha cell of the islet of Langerhans is, in the morphological field, the seat of this function. With the introduction of alloxan, which is a simple method of inducing selective necrosis of the beta …  Lire la suite

In the Unes which follow the .intention has been to analyze what three outstanding philosophers meant by courage, how it is related to the other cardinal virtues, and where each of these thinkers stands with respect to the notions presented above. From such an analysis it is hoped that some support will be found for the authorfs own position, namely that courage is a habit of will which makes for something being done without dissuasion by adverse circumstances. A comparison of the linear starting material and the branched products would then reveal the effect of known amounts of branchlng on solubility, fiber formation, vlscosity and other physical properties. It was precipitated with phosphotungstic acid and then crystallized as the hydrochloride after removal of the acid with barium hydroxide. The following technique was the basis for the first method of determining lysine in protein hydrolysates: histidine was precipitated from the alkaline hydrolysate with mercuric chloride, arginine was removed as the silver sait from the remaining solution after saturation with barium hydroxide and finally lysine was separated from the remaining amino acids by précipitation with phosphotungstic acid and crystallizati on as the picrate sait after decomposing the phosphotungstate with barium …  Lire la suite

In this method, the Chamber is filled with deuterium gas and the gamma rays to be measured are allowed to pass through the Chamber. The lengths of the proton tracks resulting from the photodisintegration of the deuterium are measured. From the lengths of these tracks, the energy of the protons can be found by means of the ränge energy relation. 1948 — The politics of Jonathan Swift.
    Résumé

The sociological or political approach to literature is currently very fashionable. Some modern schools of criticism are as much to be distinguished by political allegiance as by aesthetic doctrines. There are signs, however, that a reaction may soon take place, and that literature may be judged, once more, by purely artistic criteria, to the comparative neglect of social or tendentious implications. The extremes of either method are, of course, undesirable, for literary value cannot be assessed and weighed unless the critic has been able to consider the work from every possible aspect, neglecting neither the political implications (when there are …  Lire la suite

It would not be giving an altogether true impression to say that French Canada in the 1880’s expressed its political interests through a two-party system. On the face of it, the assertion would seem true enough. There were two parties: two etiquettes would be the better term, to borrow an expression from the French Canadian political vocabulary. Liberals and Conservatives, rouges and bleus, contested elections and formed governments. The two-party system had a real meaning, but political life did not end there. Behind the labels of rouge and bleu lay the more complicated picture of struggling groups and factions. In …  Lire la suite

Also the optical properties of the unsaturated ethers suggested further that certain substituted dienes have unusual structural features which give rise to conjugation beyond that usually recognized. It was, therefore decided to investigate the more fundamental problem of conjugation and its effect on the polar polymerization reactions of some substituted butadienes.  Lire la suite
