1959 — The location of xanthate groups in starch xanthates.
    Résumé

Starch xanthates were first prepared over 50 years ago, and since then little has been learned about their chemical structure; even suggestions for their industrial utilization have been very few. In the meantime, the emergence of the viscose process and the rayon and cellulose film industries has stimulated a great amount of research on cellulose xanthates all over the world but, nevertheless, little knowledge has been gained about the distribution of the xanthate groups in the cellulose macro-molecule, and particularly within the anhydroglucose units. Only recently, attempts were made in these laboratories to locate the xanthate groups in samples of …  Lire la suite

1959 — Flow of granular material through orifices.
    Résumé

This study introduces and investigates a general method for measuring the flow of granular material through orifices. During the last decade or so, the phenomenon of the mechanization of material handling in modern industry has developed into immense proportions. But the problem of the handling of granular material through orifices lies, obviously, at the very root of this tremendous development. The present study is an attempt to contribute to the solution of this problem. Laboratory investigations were conducted with Ottawa Sand, glass bins, sand-paper bins and circular orifices. The effect of head, diameter of bin, diameter of orifice, roughness of …  Lire la suite

1959 — The bogs of central Labrador-Ungava: an examination of their physical characteristics.
    Résumé

The material presented in this thesis is drawn from investigations made during a three month field season at the McGill Subarctic Research Laboratory. During May, June and September, 1957, a study of the bogs in the Knoh Lake area was made. The primary objective was to make a field check on a classification which had been made from air photographs during the winter of 1956-57. It is not intended as a Botanical study, but is a consideration of the physical characteristics and surface features, in an attempt to explain their mode of occurrence. It is hoped that the study may …  Lire la suite

1959 — An inquiry into the interrelationship between Islam and nationalism in the writings of Egyptians, 1945-56.
    Résumé

Nationalism is a relatively recent phenomenon in human history. For, in the past man's loyalty had been due not to the nation-state or nationality, but to differing forms of social authority, political organization and ideological cohesion such as tribe or clan, the city state or the feudal lord, the dynastic state, the church or the religious group. During the Middle Ages there are hardly any traces of nationalism, either in the Islamic World or Christendom. In those times, the abject of popular loyalty was not nationality but religion. In Europe, "the object of popular loyalty which was superior to all …  Lire la suite

    1959 — A synoptic climatology for Labrador-Ungava.
    Résumé

A classification of airflow pattern types is formulated for the region on the basis of synoptic weather maps for November, 1956 to March, 1958. Regional indices of the zonal and meridional flow at mean sea level and the 500 mb level are examined in relation to the airflow types. The spatial and temporal variations of weather phenomena associated with the types are analyzed by quantitative weather parameters and the significance of the results is assessed with reference to local weather forecasting and palaeoclimatic reconstructions.

1959 — The effect of grinding on the voluntary consumption and nutrient availability of early vs. late cut clover and timothy hays when fed to lamb.
    Résumé

Voluntary consumption, as a criterion of feeding value of two forage species was further tested by determining the “within species” effect of stage of maturity and of the physical form in which these forages were fed. Chemical composition, digestibility coefficients, voluntary intake and liveweight gains were determined. Various relationships between these factors and their relationship to forage species, stage of maturity and to the physical form in which the forage was fed, were investigated. Voluntary intake of the forages (including the effect of species, stage of maturity and physical form) was highly and significantly correlated to feeding value, whether expressed …  Lire la suite

1959 — The arithmetics of linguistic structures.
    Résumé

We have investigated linguistic structure to find a grammar that will generate all sentences in English and only those. We pointed out that no finitie-state Markov process can serve as our grammar. We also pointed out that phrase structure, per se, is also inadequate but may serve as a kernel for transformational grammars. This, of course, leads to a complexity of obligatory and optional rules. We then introduced syntactic categories built up by the notion of rules of meaning and two basic categories -name (n) and sentence (s). We then built up syntactic types for English structures and described three methods …  Lire la suite

The presence of sulphide mineralization in the Bathurst-Newcastle area of New Brunswick has been known since early in the nineteenth century. Lindeman (1917) discussed the iron ore deposits in the area and mentioned that pyrite was found along the footwall of one iron deposit. The problems involved in the design of a transistor operational amplifier suitable for a repetitive computer are discussed. An analysis of parallel feedback applied to an active quadripole is advanced to show that the maximum computing accuracy for a given number of transistors is obtained by employing cascaded, common-emitter stages without local feedback. The factors which determine the bandwidth of a repetitive computer amplifier are discussed and the associated stability problems are solved by appropriate shaping of the loop transmission of the amplifier. The "transfer" of a response from one situation to another has generally been attributed to partial identity of the training and test situations (see Hilgard, 1956). Information theory, now a branch of mathematical probability, was originally introduced by communications engineers. Thus, in the papers of Shannon and Mandelbrot analogies between the applications to physics and the applications to linguistics are frequently stressed. Fortunately, information theory bas very recently been developed on a purely mathematical basis.
