1964 — The modification of human pain tolerance.
    Résumé

The idea that there exists a describable stimulus or class of stimuli which invariably and predictably produce pain has been challenged repeatedly. Similarly, the "traditional" notion that there is a one to one relation between tissue damage (or any other specifiable stimulus) and pain response has been vigorously opposed (Livingston, 1943, 1953; Beecher, 1959 Melzack, 1961; Melzack & Wall, 1962). However, the concept of a physically describable, and thus measurable, pain producing stimulus plays an essential role in the study of pain perception. The fact that some stimuli which often produce pain do, under specifiable conditions, fail to produce pain …  Lire la suite

1964 — The contribution of George Orwell and Arthur Koestler to the political theory of totalitarianism.
    Résumé

In the following pages an attempt will be made to assess the impact of totalitarianism upon two sensitive observers, George Orwell and Arthur Koestler, and to reconcile the results of this assessment with current political theory. The wisdom of selecting two such writers, whose better-known works take the form of popular fiction, to provide the focus for an M.A. thesis in political science may be questioned. Their names are, however, encountered fairly often in the serious literature devoted to politics. At the same time their works of fiction, rather than the more learned books and periodicals, frequently provide the vehicle …  Lire la suite

1964 — Reactions of cadmium metal with cadmium sulphate solutions.
    Résumé

It was reported that cadmium metal reacted with sulphate solutions of its ions. An early investigator claimed that the reaction between the metal and its ions was reversible disproportionation. The equation Cd ⁺⁺ Cd⁰ = 2 Cd⁺ was proposed. The reaction was investigated mainly in sulphate solutions, although chloride solutions were also used. The effect of conditions, such as temperature, concentration, metallic surfaces, surface area, atmosphere and motion of the solution, was examined. During the investigation, etching, cracks, pits, tree growth, dendrites, and the deposition of cadmium around gas bubbles were observed. The results and the observed phenomena were considered …  Lire la suite

    1964 — Esophageal pH testing
    Résumé

The function of a valve is to alter or regulate a flow or movement, and/or render it unidirectional. The body's valve mechanisms would constitute a fascinating study in themselves if for no other reason than for the variety of which Mother Nature has availed herself. Some are thought of commonly in terms of 2-way flow (laryngeal cords, lips, nasal turbinates) while most are thought of as being associated with 1-way flow (iris, external nares, cricopharyngeal or upper esophageal sphincter, all the heart valves, venous valves, pylorus, sphincter of Oddi, ileo-caecal valve, urethral sphincters). Some are active (anal sphincters) and some …  Lire la suite

1964 — Sequential effects in disjunctive reaction time
    Résumé

The study of the speed of human reactions is older than experimental psychology. Starting in the early 1800's as the study of the "personal equation" in astronomy, it became known as "mental chronometry" in psychological laboratories of the late 19th Century (Boring, 1950). The time elapsing between the presentation of a predetermined signal and the occurrence of a predetermined response served as a measure of reaction speed. This measure, reaction time or response latency, was studied in relation to several variables (e.g., preparation, attention, signal modality) by the early investigators. [...]  Lire la suite

1964 — Population movement and the food gathering economy of northern Labrador.
    Résumé

In recent years there has been a great deal written about the vanishing frontier in Labrador-Ungava. One of the last wilderness areas of North America, this peninsula has undergone intense mineral exploration and development since World War II. So spectacular has been the industrial expansion in Labrador-Ungava, that native populations and their food gathering economies have been over-shadowed. Despite the steady northward movement of the frontier in the interior of Labrador-Ungava, other portions of the peninsula have been abandoned and returned to wilderness. In this thesis, I have chosen to examine the northeastern coast of the Labrador-Ungava peninsula. This area …  Lire la suite

1964 — Measurements on sliding superconducting contacts.
    Résumé

Sliding superconducting contacts were investigated using a lead cylinder rotating between two lead brushes. In studying the properties of sliding superconducting contact resistance, contacts with their supérconducting members separated by a thin layer of copper, nickel or lead oxide were used. The contact resistance as a function of applied contact current, of contact sliding speed and of contact pressure has been measured in order to arrive at some definite conclusions in regard to obtaining a reproducible low loss contact with a long operating life. The sliding contact resistance was periodic in nature, the comparison of contact resistance was by their …  Lire la suite

1964 — Petrology of the Deschambault Formation, Trenton group, St. Lawrence lowland of Quebec
    Résumé

The Deschambault Formation of the St. Lawrence lowland of Quebec was investigated and defined by T. H. Clark during the course of mapping the geology of this area. The large fauna of this formation indicates that its age is middle Ordovician, being time equivalent to the Hull stage of the Trenton series (Clark, in press, a). The limestones of the Deschambault outcrop in a discontinuous belt on the northwest side of the St. Lawrence River from Montreal to a point just beyond Quebec City (Figure 1). Stratigraphic sections are exposed only in quarries and river channels because of the thick …  Lire la suite

1964 — On comparison and oscillation theorems of second order ordinary differential equations.
    Résumé

It was Sturm who first laid down the fundamental theorems on the separation, comparison, and oscillation of solutions of a second order ordinary self-adjoint differential equation. [equation...] Strum's separation theorem states that any two independent solutions of (1) will have their zeros alternate. This theorem provides information about the distribution of zeros of solutions of a single equation. [...]  Lire la suite

1964 — The proteins of leguminous seeds.
    Résumé

The proteins or the leguminous seeds have been the object or pbysicochemical and biochemical research since the beginning of the ninteenth century. They are of importance both because of their practical value as a readily available source of food, and also because of their great scientific interest. Leguminous seeds have a remarkably high protein content. The very great differences in coat of production between legume and animal protein makes the production of legume protein very important from the agricultural, economic and nutritional point of view. 1964 — The initial one-dimensional expansion of the shocked states generated by the impact of cylindrical pellets with thin plates.
    Résumé

A theoretical investigation of the hypervelocity impact of pellets with thin plates has been performed. Some of the experimental work on the determination of shocked states has been reviewed and incorporated into a purely one-dimensional model of the impact phenomena. Based on this model, a computer program was developed using a finite difference technique based on the method of characteristics in order to calculate the one-dimensional system of interacting waves. An arbitrary equation of state could be used. [...]  Lire la suite
