The stomach has the unique ability of being able to contain an acid solution as distinct from the property of the parietal cell mass to secrete acid. Using a method of measuring in situ volume and ionic changes within innervated and denervated gastric pouches developed by Wlodek and Leach, this function of the stomach was studied using various stimuli. Feeding in Heidenhain pouches produced an increased competency of the gastric mucosal barrier as measured by the decreased exchange of hydrogen for sodium ions. "In this thesis the following claims of original work are made: 1) Measurements, at various temperatures, upon individual samples of saline ice over a very wide frequency range (20-Hz to 100-MHz). The effects of salinity and electrode spacing were also investigated. 2) The inversion, by numerical methods, of the two relevant integral equations in terms of the experimental data. 3) The tentative identification of three possible electrical mechanisms suggested by this analysis."@eng  Lire la suite

Four groups of Canadian adolescent boys, varying with regard to the Frenchness or Englishness of their ethnic background, were compared on a series of social-psychological characteristics. Two groups were of mixed ethnic parentage, one group attending English Catholic schools in Montreal and the other attending French schools. A questionnaire was administered designed to measure anomie, authoritarianism, ethnocentrism, achievement value orientations, occupational aspirations, identification with parents and ethnic groups, self-image, and perceptions of parents' behavior and one's own social behavior. The effects of athletic training during growth have been studied on the same children, over three years, while engaged in swim training. Resting lung volumes and expiratory flow rates as well as cardio-respiratory functions in exercise were measured and comparison made with 83 normal children. In addition, 14 young adults were studied before and after seasonal athletic training. Swim training during growth was found to significantly increase vital capacity and expiratory flow rates. The unit operation of spray drying has been in use for over half a century. It is widely employed in the chemical and allied industries to dry thermo-sensitive materials because the temperature of the drying particles remains relatively low and the residence time ls short. Because of the high transfer rates which can be obtained and because a granular dry product is frequently very desirable, spray drying is being used to process an ever increasing list of materials, not all of them being thermo-sensitive. "A new technique was developed to measure the liquid diffusivities of the sparingly soluble gases, easily, rapidly and accurately, and which required a lesser amount of solution than in any previous technique. Diffusivities of Carbon di-Oxide and Helium were measured in the aqueous solutions of Potassium Bromate, Potassium Chloride, Potassium Iodide, Lead Nitrate, Cupric Chloride, Aluminium Chloride, Aluminium Sulphate an,: Magnesium Nitrate, over the whole range of their composition. The histology of the human seminiferous tubule has been, and remains, the object of concern for histologists and histopathologists interested both in normal physiology and in male infertility problems. The difficulty of obtaining good specimens from normal, healthy individuals, the fragility of the seminiferous epithelium, and the problems involved in adequate fixation and staining make it hard to prepare technically good histologic material from human testes. The use of radio-active 133xenon as a tracer gas for assessing regional ventilation was first reported by Knipping in 1955 (37). Because of its low solubility, xenon is ideal for respiratory studies. In pulmonary p:qysiology solubility is usually-defined by the Bunsen solubility coefficient, α, which is the amount of gas ( in milliliters STPD ) which will dissolve in one ml of a liquid at a specified temperature and a gas pressure of 760 mm Hg (34). In various experiments, young rats were given single injections of labelled sugars, particularly 3H-1-galactose and 3 H-1-mannose, and sacrificed after various time intervals. Radioautographs showed that 3H-1-galactose and 3H-1-mannose were incorporated into a great variety of cells. Most mucous cells showed heavy reactions; label appeared first in the Golgi region, later in mucus. In reactions over chondrocytes, label appeared to migrate from Golgi region to surrounding matrix. Many cells utilized 3H-1-galactose and 3H-1-mannose to a different extent. A strain of Penicillium cyaneo-fulvum, isolated in the Department of Bacteriology and Immunology, McGill University by Dr. G. D. Denton in 1947, * was found to produce a toxin neutralizing substance, Noxiversin (Diena, 1954, 1956; Tanner, 1956, 1957; Murray et al., 1958), as well as a separate and distinct antiviral substance (Cooke, 1958, 1960; Cooke and Stevenson, 1965 a, b).
