This thesis investigates the interrelationships of economic development, urban system evolution, and the associated inter-urban transportation network complexity of Malaysia. Economic development is studied in the context of Rostow' s stages of growth. Information theory is utilized to discover trends in the development of the urban system and the related inter-urban transportation networks with reference to central place theory. Liver homogenates (33% w/v) from vitamin K-deficient rats incubated in a bicarbonate buffer form plasma clotting factor VII in the presence of vitamin K1. After centrifugation, the activity is found in the postmitochondrial supernatant (30 x 10^3 g supernatant). Neither the postmicrosomal supernatant (100 x 10^3 g supernatant) nor the microsomal pellet (100 x 10^3 g pellet) alone has activity, but if the two are recombined a response to vitamin K1 is obtained. This thesis represents the result of a close study of the early Arabic sources concerning the long and violent conflict between Muhammad and the three Jewish tribes of Medina: the B. Qaynuqa, B. al-Nadir and B. Qurayzah. It is discovered that in his actions against these tribes the Prophet was not acting from a simple anti-Jewish bias but in order to protect himself and his community from these potentially very dangerous centers of opposition. The purpose of this study is to examine cybernetics and informa­tion theory as methodological approaches to the analysis of behavior with specific reference to clinical applications to social work. The applications are in four areas: 1. the development of new approaches to therapy (e. g., functional casework and reality therapy as opposed to dynamic casework); 2. the emphasis on working with groups and families and the promotion of community mental health programs; 3. investigations in linguistic and paralinguistic expression in therapy sessions as illustrated by research in content-analysis; and 4. educational programs to provide accessibility of these approaches to the …  Lire la suite

Measurements were made of cardiac output, blood flow in skeletal muscle, oxygen uptake, and femoral and total arteriovenous oxygen differences, before and after induction of a septic lesion in dogs. Half of the animals developed a hyperdynamic circulation in response to sepsis, and the rise in cardiac output was significantly correlated with an increase in muscle capillary blood flow, demonstrating that no pre-capillary arteriovenous shunts were present. The increased flow was also related to decreased arteriovenous oxygen extraction. The reflex behaviour of single sympathetic preganglionic neurons in response to supramaximal stimulation of the sciatic nerve was studied with extracellular microelectrodes in anaesthetized cats. In 36% of the units single shocks evoked single spike discharges with mean latencies ranging from 50 to 300 msec. In 16% of the units single shocks evoked a depression of background activity with latencies ranging from 60 to 300 msec and lasting 700 msec on the average. With repetitive stimulation over a wide range of stimulation frequencies the maximum excitatory or inhibitory effect was obtained in individual units at frequencies below 10 cps. A …  Lire la suite
