We studied cardiorespiratory function following cardiopulmonary bypass for aorto-coronary bypass (six patients) and for mitral valve replacement (five patients). Our investigations were carried out within six hours of bypass. We used inspired oxygen concentrations of 21%, 40% and 100%. We measured mean pulmonary artery (PPA) and wedge (PPW) pressures, cardiac output and arterial blood gas tensions. The first group of patients had normal preoperative hemodynamic studies. Following bypass (mean duration 62 minutes) PPA and pulmonary vascular resistance remained normal despite the presence of hypoxemia (mean PaO2 61 mmHg) secondary to pulmonary shunting (mean 22%). Ventilatory stability in the face of mechanical loads has been studied in anesthetized rabbits, cats and dogs. In all animals, addition of elastic or flow-resistive loads resulted in an immediate decrease in ventilation. Smaller animals exhibited higher ventilatory stability to added elastic loads. However, when the loads were expressed as a percentage of the passive elastance of the respiratory system, stability was found to be similar for all animals. The relative contributions of the passive elastance and of vagal reflexes were also found to be approximately the same in all species. The mitochondrial monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity of livers from rats deficient in iron, copper or both those elements was compared with the activity in livers from normal rats. The activities towards isoamylamine, tyramine and benzylamine were studied by means of oxygen uptake using an oxygen electrode. MAO activity of the livers decreased significantly (P < 0.01) when the levels of liver iron decreased. Copper-deficiency had no effect on the enzyme. Expired radioactivity collected from rats injected with [1-14C]n-pentylamine (5 microCi/kg) was measured as l4CO2 . The eighth/fourteenth and ninth/fifteenth centuries in Iran are surveyed in order to see reactions to the lack of social and political cohesion in that period. Despite a dearth of writings of political analysis or administrative advice, it is apparent that men are deeply concerned to build a more just and a more charitable society. Both the rulers and the ruled must make their contribution. A satirical poet, 'Ubayd-i Zakani is observed denouncing moral decline. The first part of this paper presents a framework for the study of perceptions of violence. It is believed that most political thinkers concern themselves with four basic issues when discussing violence; the definition of the concept, the reasons for its existence, the effects it has on normal social relations and its justification as a political tool. These four categories are explicated in the first part of the paper, and the views of different social and political thinkers are examined in the context of this framework. Initial investigation using a range of farnesyl methyl ether (juvenile hormone mimic) concentrations on Hymenolepis diminuta in vitro established that a major effect was a marked inhibition of weight increase of the worms over the six day experimental period. The proglottid number and degree of maturity were the same in control and treated worms ·, and carbohydrate, protein and lipid ratios remained constant throughout in relation to wet weight. The dry to fresh weight ratio of worms was not altered by FME treatment. "The purpose of this monograph is to present a study of home economies education in the province of Quebec, with particular reference to curriculum development, culminating in the introduction in 1970, of the provincial home economies program in all high schools. The first section gives an outline of the historical development of Qebec education, from its foundation in the early seventeenth century by religious teaching orders from pre-Revolution France. It then traces various events and relevant legislature which affected the progress of Quebec education through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
