1981 — Surface jets and surface plumes in cross-flowsRésumé
The subject of the thesis is concerned with the study of the turbulent spreading and the gravity spreading processes in surface jets and surface plumes influenced by the cross-flow. A total of five different discharge and cross-flow configurations were under investigation. They are, namely, (i) submerged jets in unconfined cross-flow, (ii) surface jets in deep and shallow cross-flows, (iii) surface plumes in deep cross-flow, (iv) full-depth jets in cross-flow and (v) full-depth plumes in cross-flow, reported in Chapters IV, V, VI, VII and VIII respectively. The effect of the gravity stratification, the effect of the free water surface and the … Lire la suite

1981 — Perception of sentence stress in language-impaired childrenRésumé
Two experiments were designed as a preliminary exploration of how stress is used by language-impaired children in the comprehension of spoken language. Response time was measured as subjects decided whether a probe word given immediately after a sentence had been present in the sentence. The results of the first experiment indicated that the probe latency technique was sensitive to the effects of word category (content versus function words) and word position on the response times of children with normal language in the kindergarten, first, third, and sixth grades. In the second experiment, the probe latency task was used to study … Lire la suite

1981 — Some Excess Thermodynamic Properties of Selected Polar-Nonpolar Binary Liquid Mixtures at Infinite DilutionRésumé
The activity coefficients for the solutes at high dilution in twenty-four non-reacting binary nonaqueous liquid mixtures were determined experimentally by gas chromatographic analysis of the equilibrium vapor phase. Excess partial molal heats of mixing for the same systems in the dilute concentration range were also obtained, by a conventional microcalorimetric technique. […] Finally, the excess thermodynamic properties are discussed in terms of solute-solvent interactions, molecular orientation, and energy of cavity formation. Lire la suite

1981 — A factorization algorithm with applications to the linear filtering and control problems /Résumé
In this study, we address the factorization problem in the Hardy H('p) spaces, and provide a fast algorithm for its implementation with applications to some important engineering problems. The Thesis is presented in three autonomous papers. In the first paper we lay down the technical foundation of the new approach in the scalar case. First, the factorization problem is formulated in the H('p) spaces. A formulation with sufficient generality to encompass practically all such engineering problems. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the spectral factors are derived, and a characterization of the class of functions admitting a canonical … Lire la suite

1981 — Dissolution of high melting point additions in liquid steelRésumé
The kinetics of dissolution of titanium and vanadium in liquid steel has been studied. Two periods were distinguished: the steel shell period and the free dissolution period. In the case of titanium, it is shown that the customary frozen shell of steel encases the cylinder following its initial immersion. Premature internal dissolution then begins as a result of liquid eutectic of Fe(,0.3) Ti(,0.7) composition forming at the inner steel shell boundary. This phenomenon triggers an exothermic dissolution and erosion of the inner steel shell. The net result is considerable shortened shell melting times. During the free dissolution period, the temperature … Lire la suite

1981 — Expression of host genes in soybean root nodulesRésumé
In order to identify plant genes involved in the Rhizobium/legume root nodule symbiosis, host gene expression during soybean nodule development was studied. The hybridization of complementary DNA (cDNA) probes with homologous and heterologous polyadenylated polysomal RNAs showed that most of the 20,000-25,000 RNA sequences expressed were common to uninfected root and nodule tissues. There was a marked increase in the relative concentration of leghaemoglobin and moderately abundant nodule sequences following infection by Rhizobium. A nodule-specific cDNA probe (NS-cDNA), prepared by eliminating common root sequences by cascade hydroxylapatite chromatography, was used to characterize a small population of nodule-specific sequences. Hybridization of … Lire la suite

1981 — Infrared intensity and nuclear magnetic resonance studies of some group VIB metal chalcocarbonyl complexesRésumé
Some physicochemical properties of several series of transition metal chalcocarbonyls such as ((eta)('6)-C(,6)H(,6))Cr(CO)(,2)(CX) and Cr(CO)(,5)(CX) (X = O, S, Se) have been investigated. In particular, the infrared, ('13)C and ('17)O nuclear magnetic resonance and ultraviolet spectra have been examined. The results show that the order of (sigma)-donor and (pi)-acceptor capabilities of the ligands is CO CS. The M((pi)) (--->) CX((pi)*) ultraviolet charge-transfer bands are shown to correlate with the respective (mu)'(,MCX) and ('13)C NMR data. Also, the ('13)C NMR chemical shifts and GQVFF force constants are found to be highly correlated. The ('17)O NMR spectra of the metal chalcocarbonyl complexes … Lire la suite

1981 — The postbreeding ecology of the redhead duck (Aythya americana) on Long Island Bay, Lake Winnipegosis, Manitoba.Résumé
Postbreeding ecology of the redhead duck (Aythya americana) was studied on Lake Winnipegosis from 1974-1977. Daily energy expenditure, including energy for activities and molt, showed little seasonal variation. Expenditures for molt were reduced by temporally staggering molt in different feather tracts. Redheads conserved energy through behavioral adaptations and by compensating higher demands with reduced expenditure elsewhere. Plant material comprised 92 and 98% of the dry aggregate weight of food consumed by males and females. Drought in 1977 influenced distribution of redheads through its' effect on submergent vegetation. Body molt of pennaceous feathers in tracts II, III, and IV exhibited a … Lire la suite

1981 — Tests of HSS triangular truss segmentsRésumé

The subject of this study is French-Canadian literature of the middle nineteenth century. This study effectuates an analysis starting with the very idea which constitutes the genesis of this national literature, that is, Messianism. This research consists of applying on a vast corpus of writing the principle concepts developed by the sociology of religions in the study of historical and contemporary Millenarist movements. The first chapters consolidate the sources of the providencial mission of the French-Canadian people within the greater Catholic tradition of French literature. Bossuet, de Maistre, Chateaubriand, Rameau de Saint-Pere were the thinkers who aroused interest among the … Lire la suite

1981 — Isotopic yield distributions of products formed from the fission of 233U and 235U by protons of energy 40-100 MeVRésumé
The independent formation cross-sections of ('84,86)Rb,('116m,117m,117g)In, and ('132,134m,134m+g,136)Cs from ('233)U(p,f) and ('235)U(p,f) reactions, and the independent formation cross-sections of ('72)Ga from ('233)U(p,f) reactions were measured radiochemically in the energy range 35 to 90 MeV. The isotopic distributions of Rb, In, and Cs from ('233)U(p,f) and ('235)U(p,f), and the isotopic distributions of Ga from ('233)U(p,f) were measured in the energy range 40 to 100 MeV using the on-line mass spectrometric technique; their relative yields were normalized to the independent formation cross-sections measured radiochemically. The variations of the FWHM, mean mass numbers, and mean neutron-to-proton ratios of the isotopic distributions were studied. … Lire la suite

1981 — La sécurité du revenue au Canada : une analyse économique de l'avènement de l'Etat-ProvidenceRésumé
This thesis analyses the evolution of informal and formal, private and public income security mechanisms in Canada from the beginning of the colonial period to the present. These programs generally deal with three categories of problems: problems stemming from interruptions of production income due to sickness, accident, premature death of the breadwinner or caused by retirement or unemployment; problems related to non-participation in the labour force such as those encountered by mothers who stay home with their children, children themselves, students, handicapped people and individuals who due to age can no longer enter the labour force; problems related to insufficiency … Lire la suite
