1984 — The productivity of foreign savings in a developing economy : a case study of South Korea, 1961-1980Résumé
With South Korea as the case study, this thesis analyzes the role, allocation, and productivity of foreign capital. We evaluate hypotheses based on the Harrod-Domar, Solow-Swan, and dual-gap growth models with foreign savings. An econometric growth-with-foreign debt model (consisting of forty three equations) is estimated to test hypotheses and to quantify theoretical conclusions. The econometrics include tests of (a) the Griffin-Enos substitution hypothesis, and (b) the Please hypothesis or effect. We also include South Korea's internal and external economic adjustments in response to the oil-with-recessionary shocks in 1974-1975, and 1979-1980. The econometric model is tested to ensure that its dynamic … Lire la suite

1984 — Creep Performance and Analysis of Buffer Material in a Nuclear Waste Disposal VaultRésumé
The purpose of this study is to analyze and/or predict the long-term creep characteristics of the buffer material placed around the nuclear waste container in the disposal vault. The analytical techniques examined have the objectives of deriving statically possible stresses compatible with kinematically possible strains while satisfying the boundary conditions. In order to detect any creep in the buffer material under actual boundary conditions a scale-model testing procedure is adopted, called the glass-box technique, which enables the visual observation of the buffer movement by scaling down half of the in-hole disposal system through its longitudinal axis. […] Lire la suite

1984 — Influence of protein-calorie malnutrition on the anti-inflammatory activity of salicylate in ratsRésumé
The influence of protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM) on the anti-inflammatory activity (suppression of carrageenan-induced paw edema and pleurisy) of salicylate was studied in Sprague-Dawley male rats. For this purpose, animals were fed a 21% (control) or a 5% (PCM) protein diet ad libitum or a control diet in restricted amounts (pair-fed). A significant increase in the anti-inflammatory activity of salicylate was observed in PCM but not in pair-fed rats. PCM caused a decrease in plasma salicylate (assayed by HPLC) concentration (due to increased synthesis of glycine conjugate and elimination), no change in tissue distribution, and a moderate decrease in serum protein … Lire la suite

1984 — Brain Lateralization, Assessment and Academic AchievementRésumé

1984 — Characterization of a temperature-sensitive mutant of Balb3T3 cells and identification of the defective functionRésumé
At the restrictive temperature of 39(DEGREES)C, DNA synthesis in ts20, a temperature-sensitive mutant of Balb/3T3 cells, decreases progressively after an initial increase during the first 3 h while RNA and protein synthesis remains at a high level for 40 h. Infection with polyomavirus does not bypass the defect in cell DNA synthesis and the mutant does not support virus DNA replication at 39(DEGREES)C. The synthesis of form I and replicative intermediates of virus DNA at 39(DEGREES)C decrease at about the same rate. The block to cell DNA synthesis is reversible while the block to virus DNA synthesis is not. The … Lire la suite
