This study is intended to investigate the concept of pleasure as developed by Nasir-i Khusraw, a prominent Isma'ili philosopher and theologian of the fifth century hijrah. This concept seems to be one of the central themes of Nasir's thought system. From Nasir's works, it appears that according to him the concept of pleasure is not simply an ethical problem but a cosmic principle active and functional on all the existential levels. Every being experiences pleasure in its specific way by performing the function assigned to it. Heat penetration data were obtained for a canned food model (gelatinized waxy maize starch) during processing in an agitating retort under various conditions to evaluate the effect of process variables on the heat penetration parameters (f$ sb{ rm h}$ and j$ sb{ rm ch}$) and resulting process lethality (F$ sb{ rm o}$) and cook value (C$ sb{ rm o}$). This thesis deals with the crisis of political loyalty in Somalia. The analysis is based on an elitist perspective which permits a more satisfactory integration of all levels of Somali society than is possible with familiar "clanist" or "social theory" interpretations. The paper gives details of the three leading ideological groups in Somalia over the past three decades--the Tribalists, Nationalists and Islamists. It demonstrates how the future of the nationalists' imported models of government and policies to contain tribalism culminated in the re-emergence of tribalism, now in more militant political form. Nodal sections of the winter-hardy 'John Franklin' rose cultivar from field-grown plants were cultured on a modified Murashige and Skoog (MS) nutrient medium. Very high levels of contamination from the surface of the initial sections required that plants be grown under greenhouse conditions. Rose plantlets obtained from subsequent subcultures were used for the first time in a radiotracer experiment with $ sp{32}$P to study the kinetics of phosphorus (P) uptake as a function of temperature of the nutrient medium. The biblical narrative of Jephthah and his daughter (Judges 11:31-40) recounts the story of the judge, Jephthah, who vowed to sacrifice to God whatever came to greet him upon his return from a victorious battle with Ammon, and whose daughter became the victim of this vow. Forecasts for the first fungicide application to manage cercospora blight of carrot (Daucus carota L. subsp. sativus (Hoffim) Arcang) caused by Cercospora carotae (Passerini) Solheim were evaluated during the summers of 1991 and 1992. In the forecast based on infection, the blight severity values (BSV) were calculated for each day using duration of leaf wetness, relative humidity and temperature. The first fungicide was applied when the cumulative blight severity value reached 14 (CBSV 14) and 18 (CBSV 18). This dissertation constructs a computable general equilibrium model for Ghana using the social accounting framework. The model is used to examine the macroeconomic effects of policies that alter the sectoral terms of trade in the Ghanaian economy. The study shows the macroeconomic effects at a greater level of disaggregation for this country than previous studies on the Ghanaian economy and achieves this through using updating techniques to construct social accounting matrices for three periods. The effect of quench conditions on the properties of fumed silica generated using an arc process was studied. The process consisted of vaporizing quartz particles in a batch transferred arc reactor using the radiative energy from an Ar/NH$ sb3$ thermal plasma. Ammonia was used to increase the vaporization rate of quartz. The hot gas stream exiting the reactor contained a mixture of the decomposition products of NH$ sb3$ and SiO$ sb2$. Two major subtypes of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) have been identified in the nervous system. One site is bound by $ alpha$-bungarotoxin ($ alpha$-BGT), while the other has a higher affinity for agonists and does not bind the $ alpha$-toxin. Muscle nAChRs, which also bind $ alpha$-BGT, had been reported to be sensitive to a thymus-derived polypeptide, thymopoietin (TPO). The present work was therefore done to determine whether this agent might also interact with the different nAChR populations in neuronal cells. The goal of Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is to provide protein and non-protein energy in order to promote nitrogen retention and meet energy requirements. Controversy exists on whether glucose or lipid is the optimal source of non-protein energy. A randomized clinical trial was conducted for one week to compare the effects of TPN providing 34% of non-protein energy as lipid (Group 1; n = 7) to those of hypertonic glucose TPN (Group 2; n = 6). He is an intellectual and reformer born in the Indian subcontinent who witnessed the struggle for independence and migrated to Pakistan. A substrate structure rule to predict the enantioselectivity of Candida rugosa lipase (CRL) towards $ alpha$-substituted carboxylic acids is proposed. Lipase from Candida rugosa resolved methyl $ alpha$-substituted phenylacetates -5. These substrates were examined to understand the influence of steric and the electronic nature of the substituents at the chiral center on the enantioselectivity. Crude CRL was partially enantioselective towards substrates -3, and highly selective towards and, E $>$ 100. The problem of flutter is first introduced. The equations of motion of an airfoil with two degrees of freedom, in pitch and plunge, are obtained. Then, the unsteady aerodynamic theories for different flow regimes are presented. The traditional solutions to the flutter problem, namely, the p-k and U-g methods, are formulated, and the Laplace transformation method for flutter analysis is also introduced. The response of target cells to the polypeptide hormone, prolactin, is initiated by the inaction of the hormone with a cell surface receptor that belongs to the class of receptors with a single membrane-spanning domain, designated as the cytokine/GH/PRL receptor family. The mechanism of signal transduction for this family of receptors is not yet determined. Multivariate ordination techniques were used to characterize the direction and magnitude of coral community changes on west coast reefs in Barbados between 1982 and 1992, and to relate these changes to coastal eutrophication and variation in Diadema antillarum densities (grazing pressure). D. antillarum densities were substantially lower in 1992 than in 1982, reflecting the 1983 mass mortality event. Reductions in urchin density were greater on less eutrophic reefs than eutrophic reefs. Cover by macrophytic algae increased, cover by crustose coralline algae decreased, and the number of coral species decreased between 1982 and 1992. The design of single-mode fibers for wideband communication networks is of considerable current interest. The triangular-index fiber with a capability of shifting the zero-dispersion wavelength from 1.3$ mu m$ to 1.55$ mu m$ has been attracting much current attention. In this work, we direct our attention to the bending loss property of the triangular-index fiber with a depressed or elevated cladding ring and present some near-optimal designs. It states that the primary role of NSDAP violence and anti-Semitic propaganda was to mute public opinion in Germany, and to manipulate the German population into a state of apathy regarding National Socialist policy. Children's participation and motives in sport relative to their perceived athletic competence were investigated. One hundred and sixty-three grade 5 and 6 children from a suburban elementary school completed questionnaires designed to assess perceived athletic competence (PAC), sport participation, and participant motives. The sample, when divided into groups by level of sport involvement, revealed that participants at the higher levels had greater PAC than those at the lowest level. Boys and girls did not differ significantly in PAC. The children rated fun and skill/fitness as the most important motives for their participation in sport. This thesis consists of two papers, dealing with complementary applications of the Feynman-Vernon influence functional formalism to describe different thermal effects in quantum fields. In the first paper, a black body of finite extent is treated as an unobserved environment in the course of a microscopic derivation of black body radiation. In the second paper, a quantum field is treated as an environment probed by a pointlike accelerating detector, which experiences the thermal Unruh effect (apparent heating of the vacuum). Motivated by the problem of aircraft and space-shuttle landing on an underlying unpaved soil surface in an emergency, a time-dependent mathematical formulation of high-speed wheel mobility on soil is developed and solved by a control-volume-based finite element method. The wheel-soil contact forces are determined solely on the basis of the physics of the problem. Thus, none of the usual assumptions or simplifications regarding the distribution of interfacial normal and/or shear stresses, albeit in the context of quasi-static wheel mobility, is made. Commercial food proteins were used in order to study the relationship between hydrophobicity and two functional properties: emulsification and foaming. Hydrophobicity determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) binding method and the cis-parinaric acid (CPA) fluorescence probe method gave poor statistical correlation with foaming and emulsification. The SDS binding method gave higher hydrophobicity and higher correlation values with foaming and emulsifying, than the fluorescence probe CPA method. As a consequence of the American deregulation policy, combined with the effects of the economic crisis and that of the realization of the "unique market", the European airline industry is undergoing a large movement of re-structuralization. A three year field study was undertaken to assess the influence of water table management, namely subsurface irrigation and controlled drainage, on the movement of pesticides through the soil profile into ground water. The herbicides under investigation were prometryn on an organic soil, and metolachlor on a sandy soil. Both soil and groundwater were collected and analyzed. The results presented are those obtained in the first two years of the project. In the organic soil, herbicide leaching was greatly reduced due to the management of the water table. The time course of texture segregation was studied for three different measures of segregation (detection, localization and identification of an embedded texture region) under three different raster width conditions (26$ sp prime$, 43$ sp prime$ and 61$ sp prime$ of arc) by using a backward masking paradigm. The masking data were described with an exponential model the parameters of which represent rate of performance improvement and asymptotic performance level. Nitrogen fertilizer use suffers from low efficiencies and increased residual NO$ sb3$ in the soil. The purpose of this study was to compare N fertilizer efficiency by a comparison of three N sources, three rates of N fertilization, and three application times of N fertilizer. Grain corn yields increased with increases in N rates, and split applications of N were superior to preplant incorporated (PPI) fertilizer. Grain N uptake was associated to grain yield and N uptake. This thesis deals with the history of the Acehnese Islamic empire, focusing on the events leading up to its decline in both its internal stability and its hegemony in the surrounding regions in the second half of the seventeenth century. In Telemula, a highland village of Sardinia, Italy, the concept of 'modernity' has been assigned a positive moral meaning which is used in opposition to the concept of 'tradition'. This dissertation examines the phenomenological dimension of strategic repositionings deployed by local people, as they strive to represent themselves as persone brave (good persons). Alternative representations of shepherds carry different moral connotations. Villagers who have to decide whether or not to become, or to continue to be shepherds, also wish to represent themselves positively. In this thesis, a widened X-branch optical waveguide by K$ sp+$-Na$ sp+$ ion-exchange in glass, to be used as a single mode-optical wavelength division demultiplexer (WDM) at the wavelengths 1.31$ mu$m is designed, fabricated, and tested. The widened X-branch is a channel guide structure. To carry out the design, the effective-index method (EIM) together with the 2D-beam propagation method (FD-BPM), are employed. This study investigated nonverbal communication patterns in siblings in the prosocial, neutral, and agonistic conditions. Sixty-four children aged 3 years 3 months to 9 years 6 months (16 same-gender and 16 mixed-gender sibling dyads) participated. All children's behaviors were coded using the system for Identifying Affect Expressions by Holistic Judgments (AFFEX, facial expressions) and the Behavioral Coding System (BCS) for behaviors. The major finding was that all children were as likely to imitate positive facial expressions in the prosocial as in the aggressive conditions. A review of automation, robotics and communications technology has established the need for the development of a communications infrastructure capable of supporting future underground hard rock mine automation systems. A series of underground experiments were undertaken at Copper Cliff North Mine to evaluate the design criteria and performance of several communications infrastructures. The work successfully demonstrated the capability of real-time operation of voice, data and stationary video communication as well as surface-to-underground tele-operation of a load-haul-dump machine. Intercropping of a short-cycle legume crop and a longer-cycle non-legume crop has been suggested as a potentially beneficial intercrop combination. Most studies have concerned cereal and legume corps. Few have involved horticultural crops. In 1990 and 1991, a 56-day semi-leafless pea crop (Curly) and a 75-day lettuce crop (Paris Island Cos) were grown both as monocrops and as intercrops. Intercrops consisting of alternating rows of each crop, represented additive populations (56:100) of peas and lettuce. Three solution thermodynamic models are studied: the first one, FHV, is the classical Flory-Huggins using the Flory-Huggins combinatorial and in which the interactional term is a function of the molecular volumes. The second one, FHS, uses the same combinatorial but considers the interactional term as a function of the molecular surfaces. The third one, MCS, changes the combinatorial with "s", the surface/volume ratio, keeping the interactional term as a function of the surfaces. These models are first tested with the classical system polystyrene-cyclohexane. To better define the differences between laparoscopic (LC) and mini cholecystectomy (MC) in treating cholelithiasis, we conducted a randomized controlled trial with 70 patients (LC:38, MC:32). Both groups were comparable at baseline. The median length of post-operative hospital stay and time to full diet were significantly shorter in LC than MC (p $<$ 0.005 for both). Mean duration of convalescence was 11.9 ($ pm$9.1) days for LC and 20.2 ($ pm$16.5) days for MC (p = 0.04). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis confirmed these results. Through international media attention, pragmatics, and rhetorical analysis, I shall interpret a speech which has brought both national and international condemnation as well as point out pragmato-rhetorical errors, both of which forced Mr. Jenninger's resignation. A number of organometallic and biological systems have been investigated by infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The IR and Raman spectra of 17$ beta$-estradiol have been assigned. In pressure-tuning IR studies, hydrogen bonding of 17$ alpha$-ethinylestradiol through the 17$ alpha$-ethinyl group was detected, while in organometallic estradiol derivatives, the effect of substitution mainly affected the region near the point of substitution. In analogous pressure-tuning studies of $ alpha$- and $ beta$-(Cr(CO)$ sb3$) estradiol derivatives, differences between the two diastereomers were observed and the steric effect of the $ alpha$-diastereomer on hydrogen bonding was observed. This thesis discusses the implementation of inheritance and nesting in a relational database. The purpose of this is to integrate object-oriented concepts into the relational model. RELIX is a database progamming system based on the relational model. Inheritance and nesting are two important features which are desirable to have in a database. Long-fibre reinforced thermoplastics are one of the fastest growing segments in the composites industry. Thermoplastic pultrusion compounding is one of the techniques used to manufacture this injection mouldable material. The pultrusion compounding process used in this research consists of pulling a continuous glass roving over a series of staggered cylindrical pins immersed in a molten thermoplastic bath. The retina of a newborn rabbit is not fully mature in terms of morphology, chemical composition or capabilities. Taurine is the predominant component of the free amino acid pool of vertebrate retinas. In the rabbit it is present at birth and increases four-fold by maturity reaching levels close to 50 mM in the adult. However, until the present studies its cellular localization was unknown. This study confirmed the postnatal (PN) increase in retinal taurine levels and examined PN changes in the immunocytochemical localization of retinal and optic nerve taurine.
