PURPOSE: The present investigation evaluated the osteoconductive potential of bovine bone (Bio-Oss®) as an onlay grafting material in conjunction with a bioresorbable trimethylene carbonate, L-lactide and polyglycolide barrier, in a rabbit model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In twelve White New Zealand rabbits, the lateral aspect of the mandible was exposed and four monocortical holes were drilled, under copious irrigation, to expose the marrow space. A bioresorbable trimethylene carbonate, L-lactide and polyglycolide chamber filled with Bio-Oss® and autogenous blood was adapted and fixed over the drilled holes, using four bioresorbable tacks. The interest in cellulose for the purposes of nanocomposite engineering lies in its natural abundance and renewable nature, but also in the truly impressive range of diverse properties which can be accessed from the raw resource. In cellulosic nanocomposite materials, the cellulose component may provide the polymeric matrix for nanoparticles and/or the nanometer-scale constituent. This dissertation presents unique cellulose-based nanocomposites and examines the properties of these materials. Fluorescent cellulose triacetate films are obtained by solvent casting suspensions of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots in polymer solution. Tight regulation of the double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)-activated protein kinase (PKR) is critical for the maintenance of cellular homeostasis due to its potent inhibitory role on general translation. Previously, we have identified the adaptor protein Nck-1 as a novel cellular regulator of PKR activation through its interaction with PKR. In this study, we further confirmed that Nck-1 limits PKR activation under normal conditions. However, we demonstrate that the control of PKR activation by Nck-1 is reversible, since significant levels of dsRNA override Nck-1's negative control of PKR activation and induce dissociation of Nck-1 from PKR. POST–PRODUCTION HANDLING OF MANGOES (Mangifera indica L.) using Luffa aegyptiaca.Mill.Post-production losses of fruits and vegetables are high in many developing economies. Mango (Mangifera indica L.) fruit are particularly difficult to handle after harvest. In Senegal, field-to-market transport alone induces sufficient mechanical damage to reduce marketable produce by 30%. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) is a technique which has been used successfully to reduce the computation time in various fields of engineering. Here POD is applied to electromagnetic field computations, specifically to the simulation of electromagnetic diffusion by the time-domain finite element method. The standard method requires a large matrix equation to be solved at every time step. POD is applied to greatly reduce the size of the matrices. Both 1-D and 2-D test cases are considered. Applying POD reduces the matrix dimension for a 2-D problem from 2,535 to just 5, with negligible loss of accuracy.  Lire la suite

Mechanisms to share information from Mechanical Computer Assisted Design (MCAD) to simulation model have been demonstrated using various approaches. However, in all cases the information sharing is unidirectional - from the MCAD to Multi-Body Systems (MBS) simulation - which lacks the bidirectional mapping required in a concurrent engineering context where both models need to develop in parallel while remaining consistent.We present a modelling library and a model mapping that permits and encourages parallel development of the mechanical assembly in both the MBS simulation and MCAD environments while supporting both bidirectional initial full transfer and incremental updates. Mutations in the Parkin gene cause a juvenile-onset for of Parkinson's disease (PD) that is transmitted in an autosomal recessive way. Studies have shown that mutations in parkin account for almost 50% of all juvenile-onset forms of PD, making parkin one of the most studied genes as a causative factor for PD.Ubiquitin (Ub), a small 76 amino acid protein, can be covalently attached to other proteins. This post-translational modification is used as a signal for degradation in the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway (UPP). After important intellectual contributions to the Arab Nahda, the Syro-Lebanese of Egypt (the Shawam) underwent a far-reaching process of French acculturation. This process culminated in their cultural alienation from mainstream Egyptian society, and became a major reason for their departure from Nasserite Egypt in the sixties. Unlike previous narratives dealing with the history of the Shawam in Egypt, which underscored static identitarian choices as the driving force behind their cultural alienation, my thesis situates their adoption of French language and culture in the wider context of the Egyptian francophonie. La résolution de problèmes de moindres carrés en nombres entiers (ILS) comprend habituellement deux stages: la réduction et la recherche.Cette thèse s'intéresse à la réduction pour le problème ILS ordinaire et le problème ILS sous contrainte d'ellipse. Pour le problème ILS ordinaire, nous dissipons des erreurs communes de compréhension à propos de la réduction dans la littérature et nous montrons ce qui est réellement crucial pour l'efficacité de la recherche. Current definitions of medical error do not reflect the full reality of error causation. Medical error taxonomy is narrowly focused on system weaknesses in health institutions and human error. My thesis consists of two essays on the affective influences of attitude importance and product involvement on judgment and choice. The first essay examines the role of attitude importance in judgment formation. For example, consider the ease-of-retrieval phenomenon, a typical finding on metacognitive effects in judgments: consumers who are asked to think of many reasons in favor of a product (which is difficult) tend to like the product less than those who are asked to think of only a few reasons (which is easy), showing that the experienced metacognitive difficulty during the reason-generation process affects the evaluation of a product …  Lire la suite

La biocatalyse de la lipoxygénase purifiée, obtenus à partir de la graine de soja (LOX-1B: EC 1.13.11.12), a été étudiée en milieux micellaire ternaire et en monophasique organique, en utilisant l'acide linoléique comme substrat modèle. Le solvant organique, utilisé dans cette étude, a été utilisé à différentes concentrations dans le système micellaire ternaire, composé d'une solution tampon Tris-HCl (0,1 M, pH 9,0) et 10 µM d'un surfactant, le Tween-40. Interaction with MgO-minerals is one mechanism suspected to reduce selectivity in flotation of pentlandite from ultramafic ore. Understanding the surface chemistry of the minerals involved will lead to improved flotation conditions that maximize flotation selectivity. The first part of the thesis compares isoelectric point (i.e.p.) and point of zero charge (p.z.c.) determined using Mular-Roberts [M-R] titration technique of MgO-minerals chlorite, serpentine and talc. The M-R technique was unsuccessful with talc, attributed to Mg2+ acting as potential determining ion. For serpentine and chlorite, respectively, p.z.c. was pH 4.3 and 4.6 and i.e.p. pH 3.2 and <3. Dans cette dissertation nous proposons plusieurs filtres IIF passe-bas qui opèrent en mode temps. Ces dispositifs sont conçus pour être utilisé comme filtres de reconstruction dans les convertisseurs numérique-temps (CNT). Dans le passé, de tels filtres ont été implémenté à partir de boucles à verrouillage de phase. Les filtres proposés dans cette thèse sont construits à partir d'une simple structure numérique impliquant des unités de retards commandés en tension. Les circuits résultant de cette approche requièrent de petites surfaces sur silicium et consomment très peu d'énergie. This thesis extends signal generation techniques using sigma-delta encoding principles for synthesizing test signals of all types. In fact, sigma-delta encoding is used to generate repeatable and programmable noise-like signals; phase domain signals such as accurate phase offsets, sinusoidal and Gaussian jitter; and frequency domain signals used for accurate frequency synthesis. For the synthesis of noise-like signals, a Gaussian noise with the desired frequency characteristic is encoded in the voltage/amplitude domain in software using sigma-delta modulation. Laboratory research in rodents suggests that early exposure to methylphenidate (MPH) leads to altered sensitivity to the rewarding effects of stimulant drugs of abuse later in life and may have implications for drug-taking vulnerability. Netrin-1 is a family of guidance cue proteins that participates in the organization of neural circuits. During embryonic development through adulthood, both netrin-1 and its receptor DCC (deleted in colorectal cancer) are expressed in mesocorticolimbic dopamine (DA) brain regions. This thesis examines the debate between peace and justice in northern Uganda that transpired following the announcement of the International Criminal Court's (ICC) decision to investigate the conflict between the government of Uganda and the Lord's Resistance Army in January 2004. The announcement of the ICC to investigate the conflict was met with resistance by many of the local religious, political, civil society, and traditional leaders in northern Uganda, particularly those from the Acholi sub-region. Six membres du complexe d'Actinobacillus minor/"porcitonsillarum", souches 33PN et 7ATS, souches NM305T et 202 d'Actinobacillus minor, et souches 0347 et 9953L55 d'Actinobacillus 'porcitonsillarum', ont été étudiés en ce qui concerne l'acquisition du fer et la production d'hémolysine. Traditionnellement, l'activité hémolytique a été employée afin de distinguer entre A. minor et 'A. porcitonsillarum', le dernier organisme étant hémolytique tandis que le premier étant non hémolytique. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic progressive neurological disease afflicting mostly young adults in North America, predominantly women. MS has little effect on life span but significant effect on quality of life. Despite the known benefits of exercise, evidence shows that persons with chronic disabling conditions such as MS are less physically active. Considering this, a deeper understanding of persons with MS and their exercise engagements and concerns is a crucial first step. The proper wiring of the central nervous system is a crucial step for normal biological development. Netrin-1 belongs to a family of bifunctional guidance molecules that play a role in navigating growing axons either towards (chemoattraction) or away (chemorepulsion) from specific targets. There are four UNC5 homologues in mammals, which are related to the product of the Uncoordinated-5 gene, originally identified in the nematode worm C. elegans. These homologues bind netrin-1 and are thought to mediate chemorepulsion by forming a heterodimer with another netrin-1 receptor, DCC. Parallelization and optimization of the MATLAB® programming language presents severalchallenges due to the dynamic nature of MATLAB. Since MATLAB does not have statictype declarations, neither the shape and size of arrays, nor the loop bounds are known atcompile-time. This means that many standard array dependence tests and associated transformationscannot be applied straight-forwardly. On présente une méthode d'inférence de paramètres lorsque l'on a un échantillon d'une distribution avec une fonction caractéristique connue mais avec une densité de probabilité inconnue. Le contexte sur lequel on se concentre est l'inférence paramétrique avec des données régulièrement échantillonnées d'un processus de Lévy, comme c'est souvent le cas dans la modélisation de séries temporelles financières. La méthode utilise la fonction caractéristique empirique, obtenue à partir des données, pour trouver les paramètres qui minimisent une fonction de distance spécifique. Decision-making under uncertainty has become critical as autonomous and semi-autonomous agents become more ubiquitious in our society. These agents must deal with uncertainty and ambiguity from the environment and still perform desired tasks robustly. Partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) provide a principled mathematical framework for modelling agents operating in such an environment. These models are able to capture the uncertainty from noisy sensors, inaccurate actuators, and perform decision-making in light of the agent's incomplete knowledge of the world. The way humans visualize and interact with visual data affects how that data is processed. The current most prevalent paradigm for displaying visual content is a two dimensional display that suffers from a number of shortcomings. One shortcoming is that the display is a flat 2D display. As such, displaying collections of images that have been acquired from widely differing viewpoints becomes a challenge. Loosely based on Freud's concept of the uncanny – that frightful and inexplicable experience of the home as a foreign and strange space – the (un)homely is a poignant sign of the times, a contemporary trope of the various kinds of spatial dislocation, transience, homelessness and disempowerment symptomatic of contemporary global societies. Sensory neurons respond to a stimulus, such as light or sound with temporal sequences of electric pulses known as action potentials. Action potentials carry information about a stimulus in temporal sequences. Little is known, however, about how groups of neurons convey information, in part because of the complexity of natural stimuli and also because of neurons' complex dynamics that make them respond with spike patterns.
