Modern sport helmets have been effective in reducing catastrophic head injuries such as skull fracture and subdural hematoma; yet, the high prevalence of minor traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) is an unresolved public health concern. Consequently, there is a need for greater scrutiny in a helmet's ability to mitigate collision forces that may correspond to mTBI risk. Current safety standards primarily assess a helmet's ability to minimize the whole head's peak acceleration during blunt impacts. Les copolymères de styrène/acrylonitrile (SAN) avec des excellente fidélité en bout de chaîne et des faible polydispersité Mw/Mn (1,10 - 1,30) ont été synthétisés par polymérisation des nitroxydes (NMP) dans une solution de diméthylformamide (DMF) avec d'ester de succinimidyle (NHS) groupe terminal de l'soi-disant SG1 résidus nitroxyde. This thesis provides a comprehensive criticism of the current models of understanding and caring for the mentally ill in a western context. I will outline the debates surrounding the conceptualization, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. The western, psychiatric, biologically based understanding of mental illness is the dominant model of understanding and treating mental illness, despite the evidence that it encompasses an incomplete understanding of the causation and nature of mental illness. I will outline the difficulties in the creation of a cohesive definition of mental illness, including philosophical and cultural perspectives. L'hémojuvéline (HJV) est une protéine membranaire qui contrôle le métabolisme systémique du fer. Les mutations de HJV conduisent à l'hémochromatose juvéline, qui découle de l'absorption incontrôlée du fer de l'alimentation et des dépots de ce métal dans les cellules parenchymateuses du foie. La surcharge hépatique en fer mène progressivement à l'inflammation, la fibrose et le carcinome hépatocellulaire. La liaison de l'Hormone de Croissance humaine (GH) à son récepteur (GHR) sur les cellules cibles conduit à l'activation de trois voies de signalisation intracellulaires majeures: JAK2/STAT5, PI3K/AKT et ERK/MAPK. Cependant, en plus de la forme intégrale (FL) du GHR, il existe deux isoformes tronquées (Tr) du GHR, GHR1-279 et GHR1-277 qui ont perdu la majorité de leur domaine intracellulaire dû à l'épissage alternatif de l'ARNm du GHR. We study the aggregation equation $\rho_t + \nabla \cdot (\rho (-\nabla K \ast \rho)) = 0$ in $\Real^n$, a first-order nonlinear and non-local transport equation used to model swarming behaviour. The radial interaction potential is chosen $K$ to model both short-range repulsion and long-range attraction. We show global-well-posedness of solutions using the particle-trajectory method, a technique first used for the proving global existence and uniqueness of the Euler equation. Specifically, the interaction kernel is selected in order to calculate an analytic solution of density along particle trajectories and to make use of the well-developed theory of singular integral operators. To optimize irrigation water use, temporal and spatial sensor-based data related to soil water content were integrated. Nine locations in a 37-ha agricultural field were selected using field elevation and soil ECa maps for monitoring the soil matric potential and temperature at four depths (18, 48, 79 and 109 cm) with a wireless sensor network. Using a linear regression approach, a series of time-specific equations were developed to quantify both the temporal and spatial soil water stress status through a Water Stress Index (WSI). This thesis presents the application of k-space Image Correlation Spec- troscopy (kICS) to the analysis of fluorescence microscopy image time series for the measurement of particle diffusion in heterogeneous membranes, composed of micro- domains. Female reproduction is limited by the oocyte pool, which establishes soon after birth in the mouse. It is dogma that more than half of the initial oocyte population is eliminated during the first meiotic prophase progression in fetal life. Apoptosis has been proposed as a mechanism for this oocyte loss; however, its pathway remains to be clarified. The mitochondrial apoptotic pathway is mediated by initiator caspase 9, which in turn activates effector caspase 3, 6, or 7 leading to cell death. A vaccine against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is urgently needed. Recent estimates predict that 34 million people are currently infected with HIV. Attempts to induce potentially protective cytotoxic T-lymphocytes or broadly neutralizing antibodies by vaccination have either proven unsuccessful or failed to elicit the desired immune responses. However, the recent RV144 vaccine trial that provided partial protection against HIV infection appears to have induced antibodies that can utilize cells of the innate immune system, such as natural killer (NK) cells, to mediate antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) against HIV-infected cells. Le VIH continue de persister indéfiniment malgré la suppression par le traitement antirétroviral (ARV). La persistance de l'inflammation représente un facteur indépendant de la progression clinique dans l'infection à VIH, en lien avec une augmentation des catabolites de Trp. L'Indoleamine 2,3 dioxygénase (IDO) qui métabolise le Trp peut aussi réguler l'équilibre entre le Th17 et Treg. La diminution du ratio Th17/Treg est associée au niveau de translocation bactérienne observé dans la circulation systémique, entrainant une augmentation de l'inflammation qui favorise l'induction supplémentaire du catabolisme de Trp. Relatively few studies have been conducted on orgasm, and several traditional assumptions about its relationship to sexual arousal and pleasure have not been empirically confirmed. The majority of orgasm research has focused on orgasmic difficulties in women. Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) studies are carried out with atomically defined tips, characterized by field ion microscopy (FIM). This combination of microscopies allows for the characterization of the SPM probe apex which is usually of unknown atomic geometry – in principle, an atomically defined tip would predetermine SPM resolution and the tip's electronic structure for spectroscopy. Thoracic radiotherapy, a common treatment modality for thoracic cancers, has pulmonary side-effects of either excessive inflammation (alveolitis), or pulmonary fibrosis consisting of uncontrolled deposition of collagen in the lungs, for which no cure exists. Prior knowledge, before radiotherapy, of patients genetically predisposed to fibrosis would improve cancer treatments. Based on the known similarities between human and mouse responses to lung irradiation, we used a murine model to detect molecular pathways, immune mechanisms and genetic variants associated with the development of fibrosis. Cell polarity and lumenogenesis within epithelial cells are complex processes regulating normal tissue development and architecture. Deregulation in these processes lead to developmental defects and cancer. During pregnancy and lactation epithelial cells of the mammary gland undergo dramatic growth and morphogenesis, creating a fully differentiated lobuloalveolar network. These structures are characterized by polarized epithelial cells with tight junctions surrounding a central lumen crucial for the proper synthesis and directional secretion of milk proteins needed for breastfeeding. My thesis has focused on trying to better understand the mechanisms controlling glutamatergic neuronal growth, synaptic function and synaptic plasticity using the Drosophila melanogaster larval neuromuscular junction (NMJ) as a model system. The regularity theory of the degenerate complex Monge-Ampère equation is studied. First, the equation is considered on a compact Kahler manifold without boundary. Accordingly, some background information on Kahler geometry is presented. Given a solution of the degenerate complex Monge-Ampère equation, it is shown that its oscillation and gradient can be bounded. The Laplacian of the solution is also estimated. There is a slight improvement from the literature on the conditions required in order to obtain the estimate on the Laplacian of the solution, however the estimates developed only hold in the case of manifolds with non-negative bisectional curvature. This thesis addresses the problem of understanding and quantifying the variability of the atmosphere over wide ranges of space-time scales. We present empirical tests of a scaling model, the 23/9D model, which is an intermittent and anisotropic generalization of classical laws of turbulence - such as the Kolmogorov law - which describes how the statistical properties of atmospheric fields vary with spatial scales. Background: Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis has been observed in psychotic disorders. Abnormal levels of the HPA axis hormone, cortisol, are associated with various cognitive processes and cognitive deficits are a key feature of psychosis. The cortisol awakening response (CAR) has been shown to be abnormal in first episode psychosis (FEP) patients but has not been explored in individuals at ultra high-risk (UHR) for developing psychosis. Introduction: Current newborn hearing screening include testing with otoacoustic emission and automated auditory brainstem response. Unfortunately, both tests are affected by the presence of material in the ear canal and middle ear such as vernix, meconium and amniotic fluid. The primary objective of this study was to perform wideband measurements and otoscopy on newborns in order to determine whether occlusion of the ear canal affects the wideband measurements. Audio fingerprinting is a process that uses computers to analyse small clips of music recordings to answer a common question that people who listen to music often ask : "What is the name of that song I hear ?" Audio fingerprinting systems identify musical content in audio and search a reference database for recordings that contain the same musical features. The introduction of the Draft Bill to enact the new Code of Civil Procedure has revived the movement defending the partisan expertise and the institutional resistance against the common, single or judiciary expertise. This resistance is yet paradoxical. In 1978, the Supreme Court in Andrews imposed a ceiling of $100 000 on compensation for the bodily non-pecuniary injury. In contrast, the Supreme Court in Snyder (1998) and Hill (1995) had decided that the ceiling of Andrews does not apply to actions in defamation and moral non-pecuniary damages.
