2013 — Switched reluctance motor analysis and design for a lunar roving vehicleRésumé

2013 — Nitroxide mediated synthesis of well defined random copolymers for low loss optical waveguidesRésumé
Candidate materials for low-loss optical waveguides based on poly(glycidyl methacrylate-ran-pentafluostyrene) (P(GMA-ran-PFS)) copolymers were synthesized by nitroxide mediated polymerization (NMP) initiated with BlocBuilder® (N-(2-methylpropyl)-N-(1-diethlphosphono-2,2-dimethylpropyl)-O-(2-carboxylprop-2-yl) hydroxylamine) bearing a succinimidyl ester group (NHS-BlocBuilder) at 90 oC in 1,4 dioxane. The copolymerizations yielded copolymers with low dispersity between 1.2-1.4. The core structure of single-mode channel waveguides was fabricated by direct UV lithographic patterning. The copolymers with low resulted in line width roughness (LWR) of about 0.16 μm, whereas LWR of copolymers with ~ 3.5 but similar compositions was about 0.5 μm. The improvement in microstructural control allotted by NMP permitted finer pattern replication for … Lire la suite

2013 — The regulation of DnaA in «Caulobacter crescentus»Résumé

2013 — The influence of interfacial heat transfer on stable flame propagation in small channelsRésumé

2013 — Scatter artifact correction in cone-beam CT imagesRésumé

2013 — Digital TDPAC spectroscopy with application to the magnetic dynamics in iron-rich amorphous Fe-Hf compoundsRésumé
Digital time-differential perturbed gamma-gamma angular correlation (TDPAC) spectrometers have recently been introduced as a versatile alternative to the conventional analogue implementation, eliminating analogue signal processing in favour of software. In the first part of this work we describe a digital spectrometer which utilises minimal software and hardware without sacrificing performance. Specifically, we replace automation with user participation at the start of spectrum collection, significantly reducing effort required in software development, the primary hurdle in digital TDPAC implementation. We achieve timing resolution as good as 350 ns, energy resolutions near 16%, and data rates up to 70 kcps per detector, with … Lire la suite

2013 — Sexual health as self-determination:queer safer sex and the politics of policingRésumé
Montreal's radical queer scene espouses anti-state and anti-assimilation politics, offering a different approach than gay-rights movements seeking state recognition through legislative measures. Queer politics have a history of redefining and complicating norms, sexual and otherwise. As such, this thesis seeks to articulate how, in looking at safer-sex discourses in Montreal's queer community, we can imagine redefinitions of sexual 'health' and 'responsibility'. Situated in a critique of the ways in which public health operates as a tool of the state by surveying and controlling practices that violate normative sexuality, I argue this anti-assimilationist mode of sexual health challenges the 'norm' of …

2013 — Climate change and habitat fragmentation in a boreal forest bryosphere experimentRésumé
Climate change encompasses not only global changes in temperature, but also changes in precipitation, variability, and large-scale shifts in conditions to higher latitudes and altitudes. Many species respond by following suitable environmental conditions to new locations, but the necessary dispersal may not be possible on landscapes fragmented by anthropogenic land-use. This non-additive interaction is poorly understood, particularly in the boreal forest, whose extensive circumpolar distribution and large pool of soil carbon have the potential to feedback to global climate. These forests take up atmospheric carbon through primary production, which is often limited by nitrogen, and release carbon through decomposition, which … Lire la suite

2013 — Chemical vapour deposition and raman spectroscopy of large scale C-12 and C-13 graphene monolayersRésumé
Chemical vapour deposition on copper is an effective way to synthesize large scale, high quality graphene monolayers. One of the factors limiting the mechanical strength and electronic properties of CVD graphene is the size of crystal domains and the presence of grain boundaries. We investigated the effects of varying growth conditions and found that decreasing methane flow and pressure led to lower graphene nucleation density and larger grain size.Strain engineering presents an opportunity to tune the electronic properties of graphene. We investigated strain in graphene on copper by Raman spectroscopy and found an upshift in the position of the 2D … Lire la suite

2013 — Writing the radio war: British literature and the politics of broadcasting, 1939-1945Résumé
The social and political transformations of the Second World War in Britain required a massive coordination of public opinion and effort. "Writing the Radio War: British Literature and the Politics of Broadcasting, 1939-1945" examines the mobilization of British writers through their involvement in radio broadcasting. Drawing on theories of mass communication from the 1930s to the present day, this dissertation argues that the power of radio as a medium of propaganda and national identity-formation lay in its ability to generate an aura of intimacy that encouraged listener identification with the national community. Capitalizing on this intimacy, writers imagined listening publics … Lire la suite

2013 — Gait optimization for a multilink anguilliform swimmerRésumé

2013 — Translating Grindr: Gay men's identity to place in a digitalised worldRésumé
In the first decade of the twenty-first century, Internet websites and other online spaces developed as popular tools for men in search of other men. Social commentators and geographers have suggested that these online spaces are, in part, contributing to the decline of traditional gay bars. Research from sociology and public health, however, complicates this assumption by suggesting that online spaces may not necessarily change how men use gay bars and clubs. In an effort to better understand the geographical implications of use of these online spaces and their users, this paper examines the popular smart phone application Grindr. Through … Lire la suite

2013 — The media players: Shakespeare, Middleton, Jonson, and the idea of newsRésumé
I argue that the early modern theatre made a significant contribution to the development of a new, more complex, idea of news that began to take root in the early seventeenth century. Unlike other means of representing current events, theatrical discourse did not present itself as true—it depended for effect on a knowing disengagement from reality, an implicit awareness that Burbage was not really Richard III and the Globe theatre was not really Bosworth Field. Compounding this formal barrier to reality, dramatists of the period typically approached topical concerns from an oblique angle, or from behind the guise of a … Lire la suite

2013 — Characterization of innate immune response to «Nicotiana benthamiana»-derived Influenza H5 virus-like particlesRésumé
Current influenza vaccine manufacturing processes using chicken-embryonated egg technology is a time-consuming and laborious process, and is currently the major drawback in counteracting pandemic influenza strain. One solution to that problem is the use of plants to generate vaccine antigen. Virus-like particles (VLP), produced from the tobacco plant Nicotiana benthamiana, represent a cost-effective, alternative platform for influenza vaccine production. Previous studies have shown that the immunization with VLP expressing the hemagglutinin (HA) protein from influenza virus H5N1 (H5-VLP) produced in N. benthamianainduce protective immunity against challenge of cross-clade virus in mice and ferrets. In this study, we used human peripheral … Lire la suite

2013 — Two floating point LLL reduction algorithmsRésumé
The Lenstra, Lenstra and Lov\'{a}sz (LLL) reduction is the most popular lattice reduction and is a powerful tool for solving many complex problems in mathematics and computer science. The blocking technique casts matrix algorithms in terms of matrix-matrix operations to permit efficient reuse of data in the algorithms. In this thesis, we use the blocking technique to develop two floating point block LLL reduction algorithms, the left-to-right block LLL (LRBLLL) reduction algorithm and the alternating partition block LLL (APBLLL) reduction algorithm, and give the complexity analysis of these two algorithms. We compare these two block LLL reduction algorithms with the … Lire la suite

2013 — Broad-spectrum inhibition of virus infectivity by an RNA agonist of the RIG-I PathwayRésumé
The cytosolic antiviral pathway is stimulated during virus infection by interaction between the RIG-I like receptors and viral RNA structures that contain short hairpin dsRNA and 5' triphosphate (5'ppp) terminal. In the present study, RNA-based agonists of RIG-I, derived from the 5' and 3' untranslated regions of a negative-strand RNA viruses were synthesized in vitro and shown to stimulate RIG-I antiviral responses at concentrations in the picomolar range. In human lung epithelial A549 cells, 5'pppRNA specifically stimulated multiple parameters of the innate antiviral response, including IRF3 phosphorylation and dimerization, IRF7 induction, STAT1 activation and robust stimulation of inflammatory and interferon … Lire la suite

2013 — Unltrasound-CT registration of vertebrae for image-guided spinal fusion surgeriesRésumé
Accurate surgical navigation for pedicle screw implantation significantly reduces the complication rate in spinal fusion surgeries. To achieve accurate navigation based on preoperative computed tomography (CT), accurate patient-to-image registration is necessary. However, current manual registration techniques are invasive and greatly prolong operative time. To resolve these shortcomings, automated patient-to-image registration through tracked intraoperative ultrasound has been proposed, but existing ultrasound-CT registration techniques are limited and not ready for clinical application in spine surgeries. This thesis presents the development of a technique for ultrasound-CT image registration of vertebrae that satisfies the practical requirements of being automated, accurate, robust, reasonably fast and … Lire la suite

From the perspective of an anthropology of thinking, 'AI' is intriguing because it escapes 'nature' and 'culture' concepts that traditionally ordered relationships between man and the natural world. Is 'AI' natural or cultural, animal or human, a blend of both, or something else entirely? The emergence … Lire la suite
