2014 — The nucleus reuniens of the midline thalamus: Anatomical and functional contributionsRésumé
The thalamus is a heterogeneous brain region involved in sensory processes, movement and cognition. While there is much literature detailing the anatomy and electrophysiological properties of the midline thalamus, there is little data on the functional aspects of this region. There has recently been an interest in determining how the nucleus reuniens (NRe) of the midline thalamus is involved in cognitive processes, given its anatomical connections with both prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. While a few studies have focused on the NRe's involvement in memory (given its projections to the hippocampus), none have empirically examined whether the structure contributes to higher … Lire la suite

2014 — A matter of life and death: spectres of spectatorship in Richard III and CymbelineRésumé
This thesis examines the ghostly collectives in William Shakespeare's Richard III and Cymbeline. It brings together two fields of research: the study of death as a religious experience in early modernity and more recent theories of audience response that are predicated on the very liveliness of playgoers. Although these fields may seem disparate, I argue that Shakespeare appears to have seen something productive in the death state – something that, if learned by the living, would make for a more engaged audience in the playhouse. By putting crowds of spectres onstage, Shakespeare explores the experience of mass spectatorship, presenting it … Lire la suite

2014 — "Topomorphic revolution", power, and identity: a study of the implications of landscape transformations in modern Eastern inner MongoliaRésumé

2014 — Remediating lost pop: the recirculation of North American B-MusicRésumé
This thesis looks at the role of older North American pop music as cultural waste in new media environments. It builds on existing scholarship examining the political implications of collecting, recirculating and archiving cultural ephemera. I argue that as discredited and obsolete media, the discarded physical remains of failed or forgotten music— such as old vinyl records—provide personal and alternative ethnographies of North American mass culture. Crucial to this research is the concept of remediation, whereby media are made and remade in new conditions. In particular, I examine an assemblage of music I call 'B- music' (from B-movie) that is … Lire la suite

2014 — Comparing self-regulatory processes and achievement when learning for learning versus learning by teachingRésumé
Abstract The purpose of this thesis was to develop a better understanding of why learning by preparing to teach results in better learning outcomes during complex mathematics problem solving. Seventy-eight elementary students’ conceptualizations of the problem space, self-regulatory processes, and mathematics achievement were compared across two conditions: learning by preparing to teach (referred to as learning by teaching) versus learning for learning. To measure their task definitions of the mathematics problem, students developed concept maps of the problem space. To capture students’ self-regulatory processes, students thought out loud as they solved the problem. Results revealed that students in the learning … Lire la suite

2014 — Microfluidic quadrupoles and their applications in cell chemotaxis studiesRésumé
Microfluidic systems open up new possibilities for in vitro cell biology research, mainly due to their ability to control the cellular microenvironment at physiologically relevant spatiotemporal scales. As such, several microfluidic systems have been introduced for the generation of concentration gradients and have been used for cell chemotaxis studies. However, these methods typically involve a trade-off between temporal control of the gradient and minimizing the applied shear stresses on the cells, and often require culturing cells in micro-channels. In this dissertation, we develop microfluidic quadrupoles (MQs) and demonstrate their first use in a laboratory setting. Two MQs with different configurations … Lire la suite

2014 — Accelerated aging and mechanochemical milling: solid state approaches for metal organic material synthesis and mineral separationRésumé
This thesis illustrates a systematic study of accelerated aging, a mild solid-state synthetic approach inspired by biomineralization (also known as mineral neogenesis or mineral weathering). Similar to mechanochemical milling, accelerated aging is a solvent-free and low energy method for metal organic materials synthesis. It is even more sustainable by avoiding the expensive mechanical mills and the dusty working environment. In this thesis, both main group and transitional metal oxides have been selected as reactants for accelerated aging reactions. Due to their different reactivity towards certain organic acids, solvent-free separation of these minerals has been proposed and demonstrated. By transferring the … Lire la suite

2014 — Computational modeling for stress analysis of overhead transmission line stranded conductors under design and fretting fatigue conditionsRésumé
While great efforts have been made in the electrical utility industry to engineer various stranded conductors with enhanced strength and vibrational characteristics, research devoted to understanding the complex mechanical behavior of complete conductors has been scarce, especially from a computational mechanics perspective. In the meanwhile, the long-lasting problem of conductor fretting fatigue becomes increasingly critical for overhead line design and maintenance, especially with the world-wide aging of electrical transmission grids. Aging of conductors contributes to significant degradation of their local fatigue strength, leading to drastic reduction of their service life. However, the complex mechanical response of stranded conductors cannot be … Lire la suite

2014 — Human IFITM2 inhibits SIV agm entryRésumé
Interferon-inducible transmembrane proteins (IFITMs) restrict entry of many pH-dependent enveloped viruses such as Influenza A virus, dengue virus, hepatitis C virus, Ebola virus, and even non-enveloped virus such as Reovirus. These proteins are believed to have two transmembrane or intramembrane domains and prevent viral membrane fusion without relocating the virus to other sites or changing the pH of the endosome environment. Previously, our group reported that IFITMs inhibit human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), a virus that does not require access to endosome for entry. In this study, we set to provide more evidence for restriction at entry of a … Lire la suite

2014 — Transformations of tradition: modernity in the thought of Muhammad Bakhīt al-Mutī'īRésumé

2014 — Asymptotic optimal detection for MIMO communication systemsRésumé
The high complexity of optimal detection for spatial multiplexing MIMO systems motivates the need for more practical alternatives. Among many suboptimal schemes reported in the literature, very few can be proven to provide close to optimal performance with low fixed complexity. In this thesis, we consider a class of list-based detectors that first generate a list of candidate decision vectors, and then the best candidate in the list is chosen as the final decision. First, we perform a diversity analysis of such schemes and derive sufficient conditions for achieving optimal performance asymptotically. We then introduce the Sel-MMSE-OSIC algorithm that employs … Lire la suite

2014 — Experimental and numerical study of acoustic streaming with applications in thermoacoustic refrigeratorRésumé

2014 — Reactive oxygen species mediated regulation of autophagy in skeletal musclesRésumé
Skeletal muscles comprise of approximately 50% of the human body mass and are critical organs for enabling locomotion and exerting metabolic control. Autophagy, a lysosome-dependant catabolic process involved in the degradation of long-lived proteins and organelles, is an important process responsible for maintaining muscle homeostasis. Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) has been shown to induce autophagy in many different cell types. In this study, we evaluate the effects of physiological levels of mitochondrial-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) on skeletal muscle autophagy. In differentiated C2C12 myotubes, basal level autophagy and autophagy triggered by 1.5 to 4 hr of acute nutrient deprivation, inhibition … Lire la suite

2014 — Mechanism of formation and mass spectral characterization of thermally generated toxicants: chloropropanols and their estersRésumé

2014 — The developmental basis of caste evolution in antsRésumé
Phenotypic plasticity is the ability for a single genotype to give rise to alternative adaptive phenotypes in response to environmental conditions facilitating their survival. In some cases, environmental conditions can influence the course of development of an organism, leading to the induction of novel phenotypic variation, the raw materials for selection in evolution. Although this fact has the potential to unify the disparate fields of ecology, development and evolution, we have only begun to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms that translate the environment into phenotypic diversity. Ants are highly plastic; during development a single genotype can give rise to an … Lire la suite

2014 — Selective killing of oncogenically transformed cells by arsenic trioxide and troloxRésumé
A major disadvantage of cytotoxic chemotherapy is the difficulty in selectively targeting tumor cells. Therefore, understanding the biological differences between cancer and normal cells provides a foundation for designing strategies to improve cancer therapy. Although arsenic trioxide (ATO, As2O3) is an effective therapy in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), its use in solid tumors is limited by the toxicity observed at concentrations required to induce apoptosis in non-APL cells. It is well characterized that oncogenically transformed cell lines generate a greater amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS) at basal levels.(1,2) Furthermore, it is thought that the increase of ROS formation renders …

2014 — Roles of protein tyrosine phosphatase PTP-PEST in innate immune cellsRésumé
PTP-PEST (protein tyrosine phosphatase - proline-, glutamic acid-, serine- and threonine-rich; also named PTPN12) is an intracellular protein tyrosine phosphatase highly expressed in non-immune and immune cells. PTP-PEST was previously reported to be a critical regulator of cytoskeletal reorganization, cell adhesion and migration in non-immune cells. Moreover, PTP-PEST has a role as tumor suppressor in several types of human solid tumors. Recently, the roles of PTP-PEST in immune cells have also been clarified, using a cell type-specific conditional PTP-PEST-deficient mouse. In T cells, PTP-PEST has an essential role in secondary T cell activation, inhibition of T cell anergy and induction … Lire la suite
