Pierre Attaingnant's fourteen-volume Motet Series (1534-1539) was a monumental achievement in music printing, featuring innovative approaches to organisation and far exceeding the four earlier motet series printed by Petrucci, Antico, and Moderne, in terms of size and structure. Part I of my dissertation provides a historical context for the Series. Chapter 1 reviews the early years of François I's reign, the musical establishments at the court, and the King's own interest in music. Aggregated Escherichia coli (E. coli) expressing the adhesin involved in diffuse adherence (AIDA-I) cause severe cases of fatal neonatal diarrhea. AIDA-I is a glycoprotein, located in the outer membrane of Gram negative E. coli. It causes bacterial aggregation. Autotransporter adhesin heptosyltransferase (Aah) is an E. coli glycosyltransferase that glycosylates AIDA-I. In the first part of this M.Sc. thesis, we observed both non-aggregated and aggregated AIDA-I molecules by single particle transmission electron microscopy and electron tomography in order to provide insights into the poorly understood mechanism of AIDA-I-mediated attachment. This thesis connects the principles of the rhizome as outlined by Gilles Deleuze and FelixGuattari and their application to the musical composition Beneath Trees. Concepts such asheterogeneity, multiplicity, rupture, and cartography are examined throughout the compositionalprocess of this work. I explain how each of these principles can be used in the context of amusical composition. This thesis will also touch briefly on creating and developing material froma single melodic line by means of computer-assisted composition. Maintaining the uniformity of the temperature distribution of the liquid metal before it enters the mold of Direct Chill (DC) casting processes is critical from the standpoint of defect formation. La présente dissertation cherche a déterminer si des consignes linguistiquement trompeuses données en salle de classe peuvent avoir un effet sur l'acquisition d'une langue seconde (L2). On s'intéressera en particulier aux règles pédagogiques qui sont superficiellement logiques mais linguistiquement fausses. Un cas illustratif est fourni par les verbes réfléchis et réciproques du français, qui se forment avec le clitique se. Les multicouches de polyélectrolytes (MPE) sont des surfaces intéressantes pour des expériences utilisant des cellules vivantes en raison de leur biocompatibilité et de leur facilité de fabrication. Les MPE de poly(chlorhydrate d'allylamine) et poly(Disperse Red 1 acide acrylate-co-acrylique), un polymère azoïque, ont été préparées en utilisant un nouveau procédé de déposition goutte-à-goutte qui a été mis au point afin de conserver les matériaux utilisés durant la préparation du film. La thèse suivante examine l'importance du jeu dans la poésie de Wallace Stevens et comment il révèle une isométrie structurelle entre sa poétique et l'éthique philosophique d'Immanuel Kant, Hans-Georg Gadamer, et Emmanuel Levinas. In their paper “Toward a Curse of Dimensionality Appropriate (CODA) Asymptotic Theory for Semi-Parametric Models”, Robins and Ritov (1997) introduced a missing data problem, with semiparametric model, for which it was said that the natural, sensible Bayesian approach failed, while the classical (frequentist) approach gave solutions with good asymptotic properties. We will explore their results after having studied the theory of missing data and semiparametric models. We will then show how a correct formulation of the problem using measure theory leads to natural Bayesian solutions with the same properties as the frequentist ones. In psychodynamic theory, defense interpretations are considered a fundamental component of effective psychodynamic therapy (Summers & Barber, 2010; Shedler, 2010; Weiner & Bornstein, 2009). Despite their significance, the research to date examining the interpretations of defenses in-session has been limited. Studies have been scarce or conducted with small samples and methodological limitations (e.g., Despland et al., 2001; Junod, et al., 2005; Petraglia, Janzen, Perry & Olson, 2009). Matching Pursuit (MP) is a greedy algorithm that iteratively builds a sparse signal representation. This work presents an analysis of MP in the context of audio denoising. By interpreting the algorithm as a simple shrinkage approach, we identify the factors critical to its success, and propose several approaches to improve its performance and robustness. We also develop several model enhancements and introduce an audio denoising approach called Greedy Time-Frequency Shrinkage (GTFS). Numerical experiments are performed on a wide range of audio signals, and we demonstrate that GTFS denoising is able to yield results that are competitive with state-of-the-art audio denoising …  Lire la suite

ABSTRACTIntroduction: The shortage of donor blood gives rise to demand for blood substitute. The most successful blood substitute, polymerized hemoglobin (PolyHb), has been approved for routine clinical use in South African and Russia. However, PolyHb is only an oxygen carrier but not a complete red blood cells (RBCs) substitute. RBCs have three main functions: 1) Oxygen transport; 2) anti-oxidant enzyme activities; 3) Carbonic dioxide transport. Thus, transfusion of PolyHb in severe ischemia conditions could give rise to ischemia reperfusion injuries. This is due to the lack of anti-oxidant enzyme activities in the PolyHb. In-flight ice accretion poses a serious and ongoing risk to the safety of air travel as it may cause performance degradation and loss of control. It is reported as being the major cause of many incidents and accidents. Most of the supercooled droplets encountered during flight conditions are small in nature and, as such, adhere quickly to the surface where they impinge. When large droplets impinge on a surface, they may stick, fragment and splash, or bounce back into the airstream surrounding the surface. According to UNICEF (2012) four in thirty (13%) children in Canada live in poverty. Aside from being a specific threat to social justice, childhood deprivation is associated with poor development outcomes, some of which may persist into adulthood. Asset poverty, while explored in other contexts and countries, has not been explored as much in Canada as income poverty has. There is good reason to suspect that assets have important effects on children independent of income, and a wide research gap exists in this area in Canada. Gold nanorod solutions absorb light strongly at specific wavelengths, due to plasmon resonances. The wavelength of peak absorption shifts depending on the refractive index of the solvent, which makes them ideal for optical biosensors. However, in solution multiple resonances are present because the nanorod orientation is random. Here, an attempt at developing a technique for creating an aligned nanorod sample is presented. A solution of gold nanorods suspended in liquid polymer was cured while exposed to an electric field. Chez la souris, une déficience de cet enzyme mène à des troubles au niveau de la reproduction, ainsi qu’à des défaults de méthylation d’ADN dans la lignée germinale. Mosses play a key role in the carbon (C) budget of black spruce forests, which are widely distributed across Canada and throughout the circumboreal region. Mosses are currently not included in the forest C stock accounting of large-scale national models used by Canada to meet international greenhouse gas reporting requirements. It is therefore essential to increase our scientific understanding of the dynamics of moss-C accumulation in black spruce forest ecosystems in a national-scale context. In order to alleviate poverty in Mexico, the federal government created a form of land tenure called the ejido. People in the ejido work and live under a particular set of federal regulations which, among other things, severely restricts transferring ejido land. After almost a century of being legislated, however, the ejido has not helped its inhabitants rise out of poverty. Macromolecular drug delivery systems, or nanocarriers, designed to improve the bioavailability of therapeutic and diagnostic agents, are promising tools for the site-specific delivery of drugs to the central nervous system (CNS). In particular, nanocarriers exhibit inherent activity that can be used to modulate glial cell responses to stimuli in the CNS microenvironment. One of the major complaints from older adults -aged 60 years and above, is that their memory for past personal experiences (episodic memory) is declining with age. Older adults have difficulty in remembering the content and context of past events (Craik, 2002). Several neuropsychological and neuroimaging findings have associated an abnormal frontal lobe functioning to impairments in episodic memory, with age (Tulving, et al., 1988; Moscovitch & Winocur, 1992; Rajah & D'Esposito, 2005). The granite – greenstone terranes in northwestern Ontario contain oval granitoid bodies. A specific granitoid body known as the Dashwa Gneiss was studied and the results are presented in this paper. The rocks in the field area display key features of diapirism that include concentric, steeply dipping foliations, radially distributed lineations and a shear zone bounding the granitoid that consistently shows 'granitoid up' kinematics relative to surrounding metavolcanic rocks. Canola fuels a multi-billion dollar industry in Canada. It is a Canadian trademarked name of specific cultivars derived from specific Brassicaceae plants. Cis-NATs are natural antisense transcripts that overlap a gene and are not translated into proteins. Instead, they silence their parent gene's expression through various mechanisms. Their role in humans is well established, but their role in plants is relatively obscure. The goal of this thesis project is to analyze the conservation of cis-NATs across 8 different Brassicaceae genera (9 species). This is useful for picking up targets for crop improvement in canola. The lack of information about the interaction of metal mixtures in soils encouraged us to improve the knowledge on the toxicity of mixtures of copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn). Risk assessors estimate the concentration of trace metals that poses a threat to environmental and human health. But the effects of the metal mixture are not as well understood as individual metals. This study investigated the components of an adapted physical activity program perceived to be successful from multiple perspectives, those being the adolescents, the instructors, and the parents. Their personal experiences and interpretations were ascertained by interviews, and field observations. The literature review involved arguments from topics such as individuals with disabilities and physical activity, research in sport and recreation programs, research gaps in the study of APA programs, program success and program components, instructors and training, and intervention models. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in high income countries, with maximal risk of acute events between 06:00 and noon. Behavioral changes associated with the sleep-wake cycle were first implicated in the risk clustering of cardiovascular events. The circadian system orchestrates the endogenous 24-hour variation of a variety of biological processes, including within the cardiovascular system. Epidemiological evidence supports the involvement of both circadian and sleep-wake processes in the occurrence of adverse cardiovascular events, but causal pathways are only starting to emerge. Advances in Parkinson's disease research are uncovering a complex pathology that extends well beyond basal ganglia and dopamine-related structures, one that impacts sensory processing and sensorimotor integration as much as it does motor planning and execution, with implications for the functional consequences of the disorder. The Long Valley Volcanic Field is best known for the paroxysmal 0.76 Ma Bishop Tuff caldera-forming eruption. Postcaldera volcanic activity initially was focused within the caldera complex and along its western and southern margins. Starting at ~60 ka, however, intracaldera volcanism ceased and the focus of activity shifted to the north into the Mono Basin. Frequent eruptions over the past 60,000 years have emplaced the Mono domes and the Mono Lake lavas.
