2014 — Photoresponsive azo-crosslinked silicone elastomers: synthesis, characterization and application evaluationsRésumé

2014 — Identification of multiple-input, single-output, discrete transfer function models. Application to ankle stiffness.Résumé
Dynamic ankle joint stiffness defines the relationship between the position of the ankle and the torque acting about it and can be separated into intrinsic and reflex components. Under stationary conditions, intrinsic stiffness can be described by a linear second order system while reflex stiffness is described by a Hammerstein system whose input is delayed velocity. Given that reflex and intrinsic torque cannot be measured separately, there has been much interest in the development of system identification techniques to separate them analytically. To date, most methods have been nonparametric and as a result there is no direct link between the … Lire la suite

2014 — Application of mass spectrometry and isotope labelling technique to study the role of various derivatives of α-dicarbonyl moiety in the generation of Strecker and Maillard reaction productsRésumé

2014 — Modifying the pantoyl moiety of N-alkypantothenamides through stereoselective alkylations and olefin cross- metathesisRésumé

2014 — The role of the T-box transcription factors Midline and H15 during epidermal growth factor receptor mediated epithelial patterning in «Drosophila melanogaster»Résumé
Axis specification in the Drosophila eggshell is achieved through localized activation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in the follicular epithelium by its ligand, Gurken (Grk), during oogenesis. Early activation of EGFR specifies posterior fates in the follicular epithelium. However at mid-oogenesis, graded EGFR activation in the dorsal anterior region of the epithelium will specify the dorsal anterior follicular cell fates. Recently we have shown that early EGFR signalling induces the expression of Midline and H15. These T-box transcription factors confer a molecular memory in posterior cells, preventing them from being specified as dorsal anterior follicle cells during the … Lire la suite

2014 — Practical designs for DNA nanostructures: balancing minimal design and structural complexityRésumé
Self-assembled nanostructures provide an exciting opportunity to generate new materials with molecular resolution, and in a massively parallel fashion. Nanomaterials often display unique properties relative to their bulk analogues, giving them attractive potential in fields like electronics, photonics, structural biology, and therapeutics. DNA, beyond its role in genetics, is also one of the best self-assembling molecules known. It uses specific base-pairing interactions to come together into a well-defined, rigid double helix. We can therefore predict exactly how two different strands of DNA will interact in solution with impressive accuracy. DNA nanotechnology applies this ability to the generation of complex nanostructures … Lire la suite

2014 — Effects of thermal effluent on the diversity and distribution of benthic invertebrates in the St. Lawrence RiverRésumé
Temperature is a primary physical constraint on the distribution and abundance of aquatic organisms. Increasingly, human activities modify natural thermal regimes of aquatic systems, thereby altering the composition and structure of the organismal community. For decades, the Gentilly-2 Nuclear Power Plant (G2NPP) in Bécancour, QC, has discharged coolant water into the St. Lawrence River at temperatures more than 10ºC above ambient. My study aimed to quantify how the diversity, composition, and abundance of the St. Lawrence benthic macroinvertebrate community has been altered by G2NPP thermal effluent. Benthic samples were collected at sites along the thermal gradient downstream of G2NPP in …

2014 — Identifying factors involved in chromosome movement during prophase I of meiosis in Caenorhabditis elegansRésumé

2014 — The effect of model misspecification for polytomous logistic adjacent category item response theory modelsRésumé
This thesis explores the effect of model misspecification on the estimation of the latent trait in the polytomous logistic adjacent-category models from Item Response Theory (IRT). In any statistical analysis, issues of model misspecification arise whenever the posited model differs from the true data-generating model. In IRT, these issues are of particular importance since the latent trait is only measurable via the posited model.First, a discrimination-parameter weighted summed score is developed to extend the relationship between the summed score and the polytomous Rasch models to a generalized version of the Partial Credit Model (PCM). Theoretical results are developed for the … Lire la suite

2014 — Measuring emotions with an agent-based learning environmentRésumé
Learning and emotions are inextricably connected, but our scientific understanding of their relationship is largely limited by the trait-like use of self-report methods that still dominate the measurement of emotions. This methodological tradition is incongruous with the nature of emotions which are dynamic, rapidly changing, multi-componential, goal-related psychological processes. Moreover, as advanced learning environments (e.g., computer-based learning environments) continue to evolve in complexity, richer data from learners’ interactions with them is needed than global self-reports. One solution is a broad methodological approach to measuring emotions that captures how emotions change over the course of a learning session, what information is … Lire la suite

2014 — Low-power high-speed high-resolution delta-sigma modulators for digital TV receivers in nanometer CMOSRésumé
The use of high-speed high-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) allows part of the signal processing to be done in the digital domain allowing for higher system integration and cheaper fabrication. Becoming more in use, hand-held devices have low-power requirements to allow for longer battery life. Also, designing ADCs in nanometer digital CMOS technologies make them more integrable with digital processing blocks and cheaper. This thesis aims at designing a high-speed (16MS/s conversion rate) high-resolution (12bits) Delta-Sigma modulator with low-power consumption in nanometer CMOS. Delta-Sigma modulators can achieve high resolution in low and medium speed applications. For higher speed applications, the oversampling … Lire la suite

2014 — Creating meaning through theatre: a qualitative and phenomenological study exploring the positive power of theatre for adolescent girls in a single-sex private high schoolRésumé
This study examines the link between theatre and positive development in adolescent girls. Using Portraiture and Performative Inquiry methodologies, I worked closely with eight girls at a private single-sex school in Montreal over the course of eight months, teaching a theatre curriculum that allows students to create their own dramatic works by looking at topics of concern to them and performing in front of their peers. The theatre class developed their communication, expression and imagination, among other skills. My research also shows how theatre allowed the participants to create deeper bonds of friendship, develop a sense of empathy and an … Lire la suite

2014 — Influence of biogeographic origin and phylogenetic relatedness on the impacts of introduced aquatic speciesRésumé
Rates of species invasion are rising globally, particularly in freshwater ecosystems. The impacts of only a small fraction of these invasions have been studied, and some have been found to cause substantial ecological and socio-economic damage. Nevertheless, there have been recent claims that the impacts of non-native species have been exaggerated, that native species have an equal propensity to cause damage, and therefore the biogeographic origins of species should not be considered in management decisions. Here, I address these claims by comparing the socio-economic impacts of native and non-native species in freshwater systems. Using data from North American and European … Lire la suite

2014 — The requirement of TMED2 during trophoblast differentiationRésumé
TMED2 is a member of the p24 family of proteins involved in vesicle transport between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi. TMED2 localizes predominantly in the ER Golgi Intermediate Compartment, where it is proposed to function as a receptor for specific protein cargoes and coat proteins. We have shown that TMED2 is expressed and required in the mouse placenta. In fact, mouse embryos with mutations in Tmed2 fail to form syncytiotrophoblast cells, a cell type, which is critical for labyrinth placenta function. Expression of TMED2 is conserved in human placentas, and we reported expression of TMED2 between 5.5 and 40 … Lire la suite

2014 — Alternative Inka imperial strategies in Northern Ecuador: a comparative study of Tawantinsuyu’s subjugation of the Caranqui confederation and the YumbosRésumé
This thesis examines how the Inkas’ preconceptions of two neighboring Ecuadorian societies, the Caranqui Confederation and the Yumbos, affected imperial methods of subjugation. Drawing upon a mixture of primary historical sources as well as previous archaeological and ethnohistoric research, I suggest that regional Inka-proclaimed imperial accomplishments were not necessarily as successful as they conveyed. My analysis provides evidence to further support recently developed notions of Inka-propagated discrimination against societies of different environmental contexts; however, I also find that many of these biases were slowly being reassessed in northern Ecuador. 2014 — The era of megaphonics: on the productivity of loud sound, 1880-1930Résumé

2014 — Role and mechanism of action of FIAT and α NAC in bone biologyRésumé

2014 — Testing of extended shear tab connections subjected to shearRésumé
Shear tab, or single-plate, connections are widely used as simple shear connections in the construction of steel structures. These connections take the form of a single plate shop welded to a supporting column or girder. During erection, the supported beam is moved into place and connected to the shear tab using bolts. In some cases, the eccentricity of the bolt group to the face of the supporting member must be increased due to congestion near the support face or for constructability. In this case, the shear tab connection is considered “extended” (the alternative being conventional). The Canadian Institute of Steel … Lire la suite

This thesis is an analysis of the impact of social media on protest (more specifically on the 'Arab Spring') and the mediating function of civil society networks in affecting protest. The role of social media tools in facilitating anti-regime protest is qualitatively analyzed through case studies of the 2011 uprisings in key protest countries. While cross-national data on internet penetration and survey data on public perceptions of the role of the new media do offer some evidence in support of social media tools as a facilitator of protest, upon a more thorough analysis, it is clear that the degree of … Lire la suite

2014 — Limits of boolean functions over finite fieldsRésumé
… Lire la suite

2014 — An ethnographic and technological study of breakbeats in hardcore, jungle and drum & bassRésumé
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the United Kingdom's DJ-oriented electronic music community embraced new technologies and developed innovative techniques to master these technologies, resulting in the development of new genres. Three such genres, Hardcore, Jungle, and Drum & Bass (HJDB), emerged at the critical intersection between computer technology and the consumer market, which allowed computer music to be made through the use of home-based studios. The essential instrument in HJDB was the digital sampler, a device that offered musicians the ability to achieve realistic instrumentation through a "cut-and-paste" method of production. The thread that ties these three genres … Lire la suite

2014 — The (not so) gentle civilizer of consociations?: international human rights law and the challenges of group political rightsRésumé
This study examines the ambiguous and under explored relationship between international human rights law and consociational constitutional and political structures in the so called severely divided societies, understood as those societies where ethnocultural diversity is recognized and institutionalized in the constitutional and political realm. This study puts a central emphasis on the issue of political participation in severely divided societies. Consociational democracy, as a system of government institutionalizing strong political rights of ethno-cultural groups participating in the power-sharing formula, finds some support in collective and minority rights standards pertaining to political participation. At the same time, such collectivist systems of … Lire la suite

2014 — From providence to police: the development of the literary detective figure in the long eighteenth centuryRésumé
This dissertation establishes a new chronology for the development of the detective figure in English literature. In opposition to the traditional view of detective literature as a nineteenth-century innovation, this study argues that the roots of the literary detective figure can instead be found considerably earlier, during the long eighteenth century (1688-1832). As rationalist scientific knowledge increased during the Enlightenment, people no longer believed that an omniscient providence directly intervened in human affairs to detect criminal activity. During this period, providentially motivated criminal texts of the early modern period were gradually replaced by human-driven detective narratives. The first chapter examines how … Lire la suite

2014 — The world of concordance: Nicholas of Cusa's «De pace fidei» and the metaphysics of Christian-Muslim dialogueRésumé
Nicholas of Cusa's (1401-1464, Latin: Cusanus) religious dialogue De pace fidei (1453) presents his unique Christological approach to Islam. The fall of Constantinople in 1453 compelled Cusanus to unfold and elaborate his theological synthesis of religious concordance. To this end the argument in De pace fidei presents a profound dialectical account of the cosmos as actively flowing from, centered in, and returning to the Word and Wisdom of God, Jesus Christ. The dialogue moves within the metaphysical framework of Neoplatonic tradition, from confusion and disunity towards clarity of understanding and thence to affirmation of the inherent relatedness of the world … Lire la suite

Background. Negative symptoms (alogia, blunted affect, amotivation, reduced social drive) are a core feature of psychotic disorders. In comparison to positive symptoms, negative symptoms do not respond well to treatment, thus becoming persistent in a large percentage of psychosis patients. Persistent negative symptoms (PNS) remain an unmet therapeutic need, in part, due to our lack of understanding of the cognitive and neural correlates of these symptoms. Furthermore, most studies ill investigate PNS in patients with enduring schizophrenia, which introduces confounding factors. Hence, there is a need for a better understanding of these symptoms in patients with a first episode of … Lire la suite
