    2015 — The Hippocampus and decision-making

    2015 — High-order time-domain steady-state simulation for radio frequency applications

2015 — Dispersive Möbius transform finite element time domain method on graphics processing units

2015 — An investigation of knowledge transfer in a high school inquiry-based project: transferring students’ experiential knowledge in the form of lessons learned and stories
    Résumé

The process of knowledge transfer (KT) is an important factor in minimizing the loss of productivity and increasing performance in various organizations. This study adopts the view of a high school as a knowledge-based organization and responds to calls for research at the intersection of education and knowledge management. The postulation is that students will benefit from KT. In order to verify this postulation, the study’s framework is based on the adaptation and use of an empirically tested model put forth by Szulanski (1996). The study’s purpose is to investigate the transfer of experiential knowledge from past student cohorts to …  Lire la suite

2015 — Copyright protection and the ‘balance’ question in the digital age – an analysis of member states’ compliance with universally-agreed standards in international copyright treaties
    Résumé

This thesis considers the legislative approaches adopted by member states in the incorporation of the recently revised international copyright standards set out in the TRIPS and WIPO Copyright Treaty. It seeks to determine whether these domestic approaches adopted successfully maintained copyright balance in the digital age. Using a comparative approach, I intend to answer this question by classifying six countries into two distinct categories based on their ratification of the TRIPS and WCT before the revision of their existing copyright legislation. This thesis is divided into 5 chapters discussing the history of copyright in the digital age, its benefits and …  Lire la suite

2015 — The role of exchange protein directly activated by cAMP (EPAC) in cardiac remodeling
    Résumé

Cardiac arrhythmias remain a leading cause of mortality for patients afflicted by cardiac diseases, such as heart failure (HF). Sudden cardiac death is implicated in ~50% of deaths in HF, and remodeling of ion channels further leads to lethal arrhythmias. Neurohormonal activation plays a significant role in cardiac remodeling and progression of the disease. In this thesis, I investigated the role of exchange protein directly activated by cAMP (Epac) in cardiac remodeling.HF is associated with an increase in adrenergic drive, with plasma norepinephrine concentrations predictive of mortality outcomes. Reduction in the slowly activating delayed-rectifier potassium current (IKs) is commonly observed …  Lire la suite

2015 — Frailty and complexity: smallholder agriculture in semi-arid Kenya
    Résumé

Agriculture, the ‘backbone’ of the Kenyan economy, is dominated by smallholder farmers who account for 65 per cent of total agricultural production and 51 per cent of labour force in the sector. However, with 80 per cent of land classified as arid or semi-arid land (ASAL), smallholding in Kenya exists against a backdrop of poor agro-ecological conditions. In ASALs, 86 per cent of women and children in households are classified as ‘food insecure’. Climate change, characterised by increased frequency and intensity of drought in the region, inserts new layers of urgency and complexity into this already-great crisis. Responding to these …  Lire la suite

2015 — Capturing the effects of urban drive cycles and passenger ridership on transit bus emissions and investigating the potential of emission reduction strategies
    Résumé

Urban transportation is a major contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and air pollution. Worldwide, planners and policy makers are consistently encouraging individuals to reduce their reliance on private vehicles while promoting the use of public transit. While transit buses reduce per-passenger emissions of GHG and air pollutants, they generate a large amount of emissions on a vehicle basis especially when they are fuelled by conventional diesel. This research was motivated by the importance of reducing transit bus emissions which can only be achieved after understanding the factors affecting transit bus emissions and exploring the effects of various emission reduction …  Lire la suite

    Résumé

Numerical chromosome abnormalities significantly contribute to the high incidence of spontaneous abortions, stillbirths, and live births with congenital defects. The vast majority of these abnormalities are maternally related and attributed to meiotic errors occurring during oogenesis. The clinical relevance of these errors, the contribution to the overall rate of chromosome abnormalities, and the association with advanced maternal age are well documented. Maternally related chromosome abnormalities can also be attributed to errors occurring prior to meiosis. Select studies have estimated the incidence of pre-meiotic mitotic errors, though the prevalence, clinical relevance, and association with maternal age remain unknown. Therefore, we aimed …  Lire la suite

2015 — A low power ultra wideband transceiver and sensor interface architecture for wireless sensor networks
    Résumé

This thesis focuses on the design of a low power ultra wideband (UWB) transceiver and a low power sensor interface architecture, both for use in wireless sensor networks.Pulse-based UWB radios communicate using short broadband pulses, which allow the transceiver to be duty cycled such that power is only consumed when a pulse is being transmitted or received. This enables increased power savings when compared to traditional narrowband transceivers. The receiver designed here is based on peak detection, and it is shown that this type of non-coherent receiver can perform better than a more complex energy detection receiver in interference dominated …  Lire la suite

2015 — End-to-end text recognition with deep learning architectures
    Résumé

Accurate text recognition in documents was one of the milestones of machine learning and computer vision techniques. However, despite this early success, general text recognition still remains an unsolved problem. Since textual information is an artificial signal, designed to be simple to draw, it can be easily confused with other simple signals that naturally exist. Moreover, unlike in document text recognition, assumptions on the way text exists should be kept to a minimum in the general setting, creating the need for more robust detectors and recognizers. From a practical point of view, engineering an end-to-end system is an elaborate effort. …  Lire la suite

2015 — Mechanisms and in vivo functions for Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha-dependent non-Hebbian synaptic plasticity
    Résumé

Neurons of the brain communicate at specialized cellular junctions termed synapses, where release of neurotransmitter pre-synaptically and binding to neurotransmitter receptors post-synaptically is a highly regulated, yet plastic process. Among the best studied forms of synaptic plasticity are Hebbian plasticity mechanisms which are induced by (de-)correlations in neuronal activity, and whose induction and expression is relatively rapid (seconds to minutes). Other than Hebbian mechanisms, various other synaptic plasticity phenomena have been demonstrated, among which is homeostatic synaptic plasticity (HSP) which is thought to regulate synaptic strength by negative feedback (in opposite sign to Hebbian plasticity), and is expressed on a …  Lire la suite

2015 — Multiple memory reconsolidation blockades for treating post-traumatic stress disorder: a gender analysis
    Résumé

Background: Upon retrieval, a consolidated memory destabilizes and becomes labile once more. During this time it can be manipulated prior to re-stabilizing to long-term memory storage. This process called reconsolidation, allows for the updating, strengthening or weakening of memories. Previous research suggests that reconsolidation blockade using propranolol can be used as a treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However the use of open label designs or of a single treatment session per study participant limits the interpretation and generalizability of the results. The present Master’s thesis reports on a study that sought to overcome these limitations. Objectives: The primary objective …

Notre …  Lire la suite

2015 — Role of salivary electrochemistry and composition in regulating physical and optical characteristics of tooth enamel
    Résumé

A comprehensive study on the role of salivary electrochemistry and composition in regulating the physical and optical characteristics of tooth enamel is presented. Saliva is a complex exocrine secretion with several biological functions critical for maintaining the oral health. The pH and buffering capacity of saliva were previously known as the primary regulators of tooth enamel remineralization; however, certain conditions such as hyposalivation can increase the risk of caries, tooth loss and bacterial infection without altering salivary pH and buffering capacity. Therefore saliva’s buffering capacity cannot be the only protective factor against caries development. Negatively charged salivary proteins seem to …  Lire la suite
