2018 — The effects of gestational weight gain on vitamin D status of the neonateRésumé
Introduction: Vitamin D deficiency is common in pregnant women and subsequently, their offspring can be born with low status. Growing evidence suggests that vitamin D requirements may be weight dependent, due to its liposolubility, and/or due to volume dilution effects in larger individuals. These mechanisms are applicable to pregnant women, as the largest constituents of gestational weight gain (GWG) are increasing fat stores and fluid accumulations. Associations between GWG and vitamin D status of neonates and their mothers has not been extensively studied. Objectives: Primary: To test for relationships between maternal GWG and vitamin D status of their newborn infant. Secondary: … Lire la suite

2018 — Rayleigh wave method for measuring the frequency-dependent shear modulus of soft biomaterialsRésumé
This thesis investigates the dynamics of Rayleigh and compressional wave propagation in viscoelastic materials. A variety of experiments were performed and computational models were created to quantify homogeneous and inhomogeneous material properties. The present research highlights the mathematical and physical principles of Rayleigh wave propagation. A basic mathematical model for single- and multi-mode Rayleigh wave propagation was created. Model predictions were used to interpret experimental observations. Spectral analysis in the wavenumber-frequency domain was performed to provide detailed information about the wave propagation phenomena, obtained both numerically and experimentally. The frequency-dependent viscoelastic material properties of silicon rubbers and one injectable hydrogel … Lire la suite

2018 — The flotation characteristics of magnetic/4C (Fe7S8) and non-magnetic/5C (Fe9S10) pyrrhotite superstructuresRésumé

2018 — The design and optimization of a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass-spectrometer for Barium tagging with nEXO and optimization of the Xenon-137 veto with EXO-200Résumé
The mechanism by which neutrino masses arise is still unknown, yet it is clear from neutrino oscillation experiments that they do have mass. One possible solution is through the observation of neutrinoless double beta decay, a lepton number violating process that is beyond the current Standard Model. The existence of this decay would show that the neutrino is a Majorana particle, meaning that it is its own antiparticle. This would provide a natural explanation for the smallness of the neutrino masses, as well as a measurement of the effective Majorana neutrino mass. The EXO collaboration is searching for neutrinoless double … Lire la suite

2018 — Improving access to mental health services among East Asian immigrantsRésumé
2018 — A democratic disconnect? Looking at age, period, and cohort effects in support for democracyRésumé
In two widely discussed articles published in the Journal of Democracy over the last two years, Foa and Mounk (2016, 2017) argue that mass rates of support for democracy have been decreasing across Western democracies, pointing to a general but also a generational decline: this "democratic disconnect" is most visible among the youngest generations. This thesis investigates whether such a decline is really happening across consolidated democracies, using multilevel models to distinguish between age, period, and cohort effects. It also seeks to go beyond overt support for democracy by disaggregating that concept into different components: opposition to non-democratic rule, support …

2018 — Titanium microalloyed Mg-6A1-0.5Mn (AM60B) for improved corrosion resistanceRésumé
The effect of Ti-microalloying on the microgalvanic corrosion behaviour of the Mg-6Al-0.5Mn (AM60B) alloy was investigated. The corrosion rate of AM60B decreased by 85% in immersion tests (hydrogen evolution) with 0.006wt%Ti alloying; polarization tests showed that the average corrosion current density also reduced by 25% and the average corrosion potential shifted to more noble values. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) confirmed better corrosion resistance of AM60B+0.006wt%Ti as the impedance curves obtained for the alloys were larger than the reference AM60B alloy. The charge transfer and diffusion resistances were also higher for the Ti containing alloy. Scanning Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (SKPFM) … Lire la suite

2018 — Bioinformatical analysis of intrinsically disordered regions in eukaryotes: Insights into the evolution of folding-on-binding regions and post-translational modificationsRésumé
Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) or Intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) in proteins can exhibit a partially folded or unfolded state under physiological conditions but confer several functional advantages. IDRs can fold into a stable tertiary structure when bound to their partner molecule, a transition that can be promoted by post-translational modifications (PTMs). Intrinsic disorder is found in all domains of life but is prevalent in eukaryotes. This thesis investigates the composition and evolutionary behaviour of disordered regions that undergo disorder-to-order transition and the evolutionary trend of PTMs in IDRs across eukaryotes using computational methods and tools. Bioinformatical parsing of human folding-on-binding … Lire la suite

2018 — Identification of responsible replacement plasticizers for Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate for polyvinyl chloride based applicationsRésumé

2018 — Sparse representations of audio signals with asymmetric atomsRésumé
Sparse representations of audio is a mature field that has evolved from decades of research that established its utility in a variety of applications, for example, audio coding, source-separation, and transformation. However, the performance of sparse approximation algorithms still depend highly on signal length, which is problematic for audio signals with durations of more than a few seconds. Furthermore, there is a need for elementary waveforms, atoms, that can effectively adapt to represent temporally asymmetric features. Atoms with temporally asymmetric amplitude evolutions have already shown promise in sparse representation applications, namely the gammatone and formant-wave-function, however, due to their origins … Lire la suite

2018 — The neurobehavioral correlates of appetite control and obesityRésumé
Obesity is characterized by excess fat accumulation to the extent that it results in adverse health conditions. Obesity is mainly a consequence of over-eating, and there is growing evidence that the mechanisms of over-eating might reside in the brain. The neurobiological mechanisms implicated in food intake are complex and are modulated by several factors such as metabolic hormones, stress levels as well as individual neurobehavioral differences. In today's obesogenic environment, not everyone is obese, suggesting that individual vulnerabilities in biological and psychological factors for obesity might exist. It has been suggested by Cabanac and Russek that "The best way to … Lire la suite

2018 — Preference integration in progressive dynamic multi-objective evolutionary algorithmsRésumé
… Lire la suite

2018 — How workable is the effect of attachment working models?: exploring the moderating influence of relational growth beliefs on the recall of interpersonal informationRésumé
Research has shown that approaching intimate relationships with feelings of insecurity can constrain the perception and memory of interpersonal experiences (Dykas & Cassidy, 2011). Attachment theory (Bowlby, 1969/1982, 1980) put forth that this happens because insecure individuals navigate their relationships guided by memories of previous relational difficulties, which can lead to more defensive and limiting thinking processes. This thesis examined this proposition more closely, and argued that interpersonal memory processing will be limited especially if insecure people tacitly presume that their relational history mirror what they can therefore expect in relationships. Specifically, the present research examined the general hypothesis that … Lire la suite

2018 — Uncovering the role of mutant RAC1 in cutaneous melanomaRésumé
RAC1 is a member of the Rho family of small GTPases. Next-generation sequencing studies discovered that 5-10% of cutaneous melanoma possess an activating hotspot p.P29S mutation. Previous studies have shown that RAC1-P29S promotes proliferation of melanocytes and modulates response to mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)-targeted therapy. However, the mechanism of action of RAC1-P29S remains unknown. To gain a better understanding of the role of RAC1-P29S in melanoma, we performed unbiased transcriptomic and proteomic analyses to elucidate signaling pathways affected by the p.P29S mutation. We performed RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) on melanocytes engineered to overexpress RAC1-P29S. We integrated our analysis with human melanoma data … Lire la suite

"Background: Systematic mixed studies reviews (SMSRs), i.e., systematic reviews combining qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies, are growing in popularity owing to their potential to provide a rich and practical understanding of complex health interventions and problems. Due to the heterogeneity of the included studies, one challenging issue concerns the critical appraisal of studies. A critical appraisal tool was developed to address this challenge: the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). The MMAT includes criteria for appraising the methodological quality of five categories of studies: (a) qualitative studies, (b) randomized controlled trials, (c) non-randomized studies, (d) quantitative descriptive studies, and (e) … Lire la suite

2018 — A role for p190RhoGAP in the signaling mechanisms mediated by the axon guidance cue netrin-1 and its receptor deleted in colorectal cancer (DCC) in primary cortical neuronsRésumé
Axon outgrowth and path-finding are crucial points in the development of the Central Nervous System (CNS), where neurons use the distal tip of their axons— the growth cone— to navigate towards their final destination. The growth cone contains highly dynamic actin cytoskeleton and it carries the machinery to respond to various guidance cues, one of which is netrin-1— a secreted, laminin-like protein family. Netrin-1 signal through a cell membrane receptor protein— deleted in colorectal cancer (DCC)— to induce an attractive response. Mutations and small nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in different components of netrin-1/DCC signalling pathway have been implicated in neurological disorders … Lire la suite

2018 — Multispecies distribution modelling: using integrative methods to project assemblages of small mammal tick hosts of Lyme DiseaseRésumé
The bacterium that causes Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) resides in tick vectors (Ixodes scapularis) that feed on and are carried by vertebrate hosts. For my thesis, I designed an integrative modeling framework to predict the distributions of these North American tick-hosts and assess Lyme disease risk from these projected community assemblages. I used species distribution modeling (SDM) to predict the current distributions of 11 small mammal reservoir species across North America using abiotic predictors. Species distributions were modelled at the single-species and community-level. However, models over-predicted the distributions of certain species. Traditionally, SDMs fail to incorporate interspecific interactions that influence … Lire la suite

2018 — Slide spatial bias in antibody microarrays: from characterization to minimizationRésumé
Antibody microarrays enable multiplexed protein detection with minimal reagent consumption, and although quality appears adequate when characterized using local replicates, they continue to be plagued by lack of reproducibility. Chemically-functionalized glass slides are the foundation of antibody microarrays, yet spatial inhomogeneity and its effect on assay variability has not been analyzed. Here, we (i) characterize spatial bias in antibody microarrays by measuring signal variation across the surface of 5 commercial slide models, and (ii) develop an experimental approach to minimize bias and optimize assay reproducibility. We used PBS and the 2 optimal buffers (among 28) for each slide to print … Lire la suite

2018 — Evaluation of neural dialogue models in large domainsRésumé
Dialogue systems enable humans to interact with computers in constrained domains using only natural language. However, such systems are typically specialized for a few tasks and do not scale to diverse domains. One approach to address this problem is to use deep neural networks to model human-human dialogue. The availability of large datasets of human-human conversation has allowed these models to produce reasonable responses across a wide array of domains.Despite these successes, neural dialogue models remain difficult to evaluate due to the large potential diversity of responses. When evaluating dialogue systems, it is useful to make a distinction between goal-oriented …

2018 — Effects of geographic range variation: Lessons from the post-glacial geographic range expansion on the morphology, development and competitive interactions of the American toad (Anaxyrus americanus)Résumé
One of the fundamental goals in ecology is to explain the variation in species richness and distribution across the planet, and in the geographic range size of individual species. Within the context of species’ geographic ranges, there are two principle aspects: the potential and realized range, which can be affected by such abiotic and biotic limitations to expansion as geophysical barriers, environmental limitations and competitive exclusion. Herein, I performed a review and analysis of post-glacial range expansions of herpetofaunal species across Canada to ascertain general patterns in the geophysical barriers that these species encountered that may be directing their range … Lire la suite

2018 — Determinants of immunization and days under-immunized in a Quebec cohort: 2012-2014Résumé
