2018 — An examination of parents' socioeconomic background, stress and value of homework as predictors of quality of homework involvement
    Résumé

How parents help children with homework has important implications for academic outcomes. Research on the impact of parents’ socioeconomic background (SEB) on quality of homework involvement (QHI) is inconclusive. The present study replicated methods used by Dumont, Trautwein, Nagy, and Nagengast (2014) to examine immigration status, occupational status, and education level as predictors of parents’ QHI. Dumont et al. (2014) employed Self-Determination Theory as the theoretical framework in creating a student-report quality of parental homework involvement measure with parental control, structure, and responsiveness as the scales. In the present study, the QHI measure was further developed and adapted into a …  Lire la suite

2018 — Investigating the effect of AMPK activation on T cell-mediated anti-tumour immunity
    Résumé

T cells are important orchestrators of host defense against pathogen infections as well as damaged tissue. T cells play an especially important role in cancer immunosurveillance, although tumour cells are frequently able to evade immune destruction through immunosuppressive mechanisms. In order to enhance T cell anti-tumour responses, some of the most successful immunotherapy techniques involve enhancing T cell metabolism. AMPK is an energy sensor that is required for regulating T cell metabolic plasticity, and emerging evidence has shown that activating AMPK may enhance T cell-mediated anti-tumour immunity. However, many of the current methods used to activate AMPK are indirect, and …  Lire la suite

2018 — A gene association study to identify novel pancreatic cancer susceptibility genes

2018 — The netrin-1 receptor DCC in synaptic plasticity mechanisms underlying spatial learning and memory

2018 — Cigarette smoke stimulates cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) function in airway epithelial cells

2018 — Using information from an indication-based electronic prescribing system to increase pharmacovigilance around antidepressant use for indications besides depression

2018 — Manipulation of host ubiquitination by the intracellular pathogen, Legionella pneumophila
    Résumé

Legionella pneumophila is the causative agent of Legionnaire's disease, an acute form of pneumonia. It is often transmitted by inhaling contaminated aerosols with symptoms resembling other forms of pneumonia, including fevers, chills, and coughs. Pathogenic gram-negative bacteria use specialized secretions systems that translocate bacterial proteins, termed effectors, directly into host cells to interact with host proteins and hijack eukaryotic biochemical processes for the benefit of the pathogen. The secreted effectors allow the bacterium to create a replicative niche, the Legionella-containing vacuole (LCV), and escape the host lysosomal pathway after phagocytosis. Currently, about 300 effectors of L. pneumophila have been identified. …  Lire la suite

2018 — Reverse Agmon estimates and Nodal intersection bounds in forbidden regions
    Résumé

Let (M,g) be a compact, Riemannian manifold and V is smooth. Given an energy level E > minV, we consider L^2-normalized eigenfunctions of the Schrödinger operator. The well-known Agmon-Lithner estimates [Hel88] are exponential decay estimates (ie. upper bounds) for eigenfunctions in the forbidden region {V > E} in terms of the Agmon distance function associated with the degenerate Agmon metric supported in the forbidden region. The point of this thesis is to prove a partial converse to the Agmon estimates (ie. lower bounds for the eigenfunctions) in terms of Agmon distance in the forbidden region under a control assumption on eigenfunction …  Lire la suite

2018 — Multiscale architected materials with tunable thermal expansion
    Résumé

Systems in extreme thermal environments are susceptible to severe temperature changes. Variations in temperature can lead to undesired geometric changes in sensitive applications that require very fine precision, such as satellite antennas, space telescopes, and large array mirrors. These applications call for materials with zero coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) to avoid unexpected thermal deformation. On the other hand, other applications require materials with large positive or negative CTE which make them capable to morph and adapt their geometry in response to variations in temperature. In these scenarios, materials that are able to provide tunable thermal expansion with high structural …  Lire la suite

2018 — The role of D1R/D2R co-expressing striatal medium spiny neurons: Implications for psychostimulant response
    Résumé

Dopamine (DA) is one of the principal catecholaminergic neurotransmitters in the brain. Initially thought as a mere precursor to norepinephrine synthesis in the 1950s, it has been demonstrated to be an essential part of the mammalian central nervous system. DA is synthesized in the substantia nigra (SN) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA) by mesencephalic neurons, projecting to the striatum and the limbic system, among other targets (Tritsch & Sabatini, 2012). The striatum is largely influenced by DA activity. The dorsal striatum, also known as the caudate putamen (CPu), is the target of the nigrastriatal DA pathway originating from the …  Lire la suite

2018 — Effects of an uninstructed study-abroad program on L2 learners' perceptions of Mandarin tones
    Résumé

Recent studies of the effects of uninstructed study-abroad programs on learners' acquisition of a second language have yielded inconsistent results (Llanes & Muñoz, 2013; Collentine, 2004; Díaz-Campos, 2004; Wilkinson, 2002). However, few studies have focused on English speakers' perception of Mandarin tones through uninstructed study-abroad programs. Consequently, based on a practical need, this study investigates the extent to which an uninstructed study-abroad program in China could benefit native English speakers' perception of Mandarin tones. Fourteen native English speakers from an American high school were assigned to the treatment group, which attended an 18-day study-abroad program hosted by a local high …  Lire la suite

2018 — University students’ reactions to a peer’s cheating behavior
    Résumé

While academic dishonesty has been a topic of inquiry since the late 1920’s, research in this area has largely focused on the perpetrators of cheating and understanding why they cheat. Relatively little consideration has been given to understanding the reactions of those who witness cheating and identifying the factors that influence student observers’ decisions to either report or withhold information about this kind of transgression. The current study investigated university students’ reactions to an observed act of cheating in an experimental paradigm. Participants witnessed a confederate cheat during an exam and were subsequently questioned. The results suggest that while the …  Lire la suite

In this thesis, I attempt to quantify the effect of density on toad dispersal in a series of steps that coincide with the amphibian’s notable life stages, which are outlined by the five chapters of my thesis. Chapter 2 examines the direct effect of density on tadpole survival, growth and size at metamorphosis using a unique technique of density manipulation. I discuss potential downfalls of the traditional method of tadpole density-manipulations whereby raising them in crowded conditions might confound results as tadpoles are known to respond differently to chemical cues left in the water by conspecifics. My method of manipulating …  Lire la suite

2018 — Multi-User MIMO relay transceiver optimization: robust, energy-efficient and secure design approaches
    Résumé

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-aided wireless relaying can improve the quality of the communication links between the source and destination nodes, hence significantly increasing system throughput, especially in multi-user networks. Relaying strategies can mainly be classified as amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF). The AF relaying technique imposes lower signal processing complexity and latency; therefore, it is preferred in many operational applications. In this regard, transceiver design becomes crucial to fully leverage the benefits of multi-user MIMO relay systems. The primary objective of this thesis is to develop new transceiver design approaches for multi-user MIMO relay networks from the perspectives of robustness, energy …  Lire la suite

2018 — The role of MAP Kinase-interacting serine/threonine-protein kinase 1 (MNK) in melanoma progression
    Résumé

In melanoma cells, activation of the MAPK and PI3K-AKT pathways is involved in melanoma initiation and progression. In BRAFV600E mutant melanoma, aberrant BRAF activity leads to MAPK pathway overactivation while additional PTEN loss of function will lead to PI3K-AKT pathway overactivation, consequently causing melanoma initiation and progression. Understanding the molecular mechanisms behind the regulation of these two vital pathways in cancer cells is crucial for developing future therapeutics to reduce oncogenesis and prevent cancer progression. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) interacting protein kinases (MNK1/2) are activated downstream of the MAPK pathway. The best-studied function of MNK1/2 is their phosphorylation of …  Lire la suite

2018 — The role of peroxiredoxins in the regulation of pro-survival mechanisms in human spermatozoa

Translation is a fundamental, energy-consuming, process that permits quick and accurate responses to cellular and environmental conditions. The mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) acts as a central hub relaying signals to the translation machinery, which results in the modulation of various stages of mRNA translation. mTORC1 pathway is dysregulated in many human malignancies. As such, small molecule mTOR inhibitors are being investigated for cancer treatment either alone or in combination with other anti-cancer therapies. Different subsets of mRNAs are regulated in an mTORC1-dependent manner. These include transcripts encoding for some components of the innate antiviral response, characterized by …  Lire la suite

    Résumé

CCCTC binding factor (CTCF) is a highly conserved protein that plays a number of critical roles within a cell. CTCF regulates gene transcription by insulating promoters and enhancers, and protects the transcriptional activity of genes from repressive marks. Because of its ability to repress oncogenes and to activate tumor suppressor genes (TSG), CTCF itself is considered to be an important tumor suppressor. Recently, it was reported that CTCF copy number reduction can predispose cancer, but the mechanism remains elusive. In this thesis, we show that CTCF+/- cells have reduced CTCF expression, and diminished binding at the sites close to SNAIL …  Lire la suite
