The active form of vitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25D), is a key calcium (Ca++) regulatory hormone. It is also associated with functions unrelated to Ca++ homeostasis. Here, special attention is paid towards the anticancer properties of 1,25D. 1,25D strongly inhibits the growth of well-differentiated head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) derived cell lines. The objective of this study is to assess current distributional patterns of species within a community, while taking into account species' evolutionary histories, as reflected in their phylogenetic relationships. The hypothesis is that closely related species segregate along environmental gradients, either due to historic evolutionary divergence of their niches, or to ecological processes presently occurring within a community. Visual selective attention was investigated in children aged 5, 7 and 9 and in adults. The groups were compared on a filtering task in which conditions varied with regard to number (0, 2, 8) and location (close, far) of the non-relevant stimuli surrounding the targeted stimuli and the presence or absence of a solid-line border around the target stimuli.
