My dissertation presents a survey of theories of violence in contemporary theological discourse. I consider four positions that represent a range of current trends within theology: Girardian anthropology, the radical orthodoxy movement, liberation theology, and feminist theology. Rene Girard creates a scientific model of violence as a universal scapegoating mechanism at the origin of all human culture, which he posits as knowledge gained through the revelation of Jesus Christ. The benefits of very high resolution data from scanning and vertically pointing radars in a research and operational environment are investigated. They are used to perform research on four test topics: the study of the melting layer of precipitation, the derivation of vertical wind profiles using conventional radars, high resolution radar hydrology, and a case study of an unusual weather event. The resulting findings include a quantitative description of bright band statistics, the development of a unique wind measuring technique, the quantification of the sampling problem at high resolution, and a description of the complex interaction between stratiform precipitation and …  Lire la suite

Data collected from zenith pointing radar is used to study the range dependence of some meteorological radar errors associated with different sampling methods between radar and gauges in stratiform precipitation. Errors due to the vertical variation of reflectivity such as those related with the bright band or with snow growth cause a much larger bias in radar estimates than those due to beam filling or gradients. The maximum useful range varies with the bright band height and the elevation angle program used, a CAPPI giving superior results especially for snow. This thesis aims to explain the complex and sometimes paradoxical relations between the defense of modern aesthetic manifestations and a fierce opposition to many aspects of modernity among writers associated with La Relève and La Nouvelle Relève (Montreal, 1934-1948). While the aesthetic reflection of these authors is the principal object of this thesis, their philosophical, political and religious positions—inseparable from their aesthetics—are also widely discussed. The first chapter is devoted to the European thinkers, from whom La Relève draws its main inspiration—including Jacques Maritain, Emmanuel Mounier and Daniel-Rops. This Master's Thesis offers a study of the works of Swiss travel narratives' writer Nicolas Bouvier (1929-1998). Bouvier develops a poetics that defines the practical rules of his travels as well as the aesthetic rules of his writing. These rules form a whole that can be named poetics of transparency and divided into two complementary poles, each linked to themes and images of disappearance or apparition. Both are oriented towards one single goal: to make the world visible for the reader. Le TCC détient aujourd'hui une place prépondérante dans le travail des chercheurs, médecins, hôpitaux spécialisés, et départements de santé publique à travers l'Amérique du Nord et l'Europe. Le profil épidémiologique du TCC peut être qualifié d'effrayant puisque sa prévalence au sein de la population est incroyablement élevée. Over the last three decades, mine backfilling has progressively integrated into underground mining operations. The high stresses associated with mining at depth in the Canadian Shield, also requires innovative approaches to mine backfilling to withstand the loading both during and after mining operations. Not only new or modified minefill systems are required, but also new techniques are needed to increase the speed of the mining cycle for optimizing the mining operation. Background. Epilepsy affects around 50 million people globally, with over one-third experiencing seizures resistant to antiseizure medications. Drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE_RS) is frequently linked to mesiotemporal sclerosis (MTS), which is oftentimes amenable to surgery. MRI quantification of mesiotemporal lobe (MTL) atrophy serves as a reliable in vivo indicator of MTS. While MTS is a strong predictor of drug resistance, findings in drug-responsive TLE (TLE-RSP) suggest that this lesion alone may not be a strong enough predictor. Several equivalent approaches to power domains are presented: the naturality of this concept for denotational semantics is stressed and its modal interpretation is explained. We show how to solve equations involving power domains and apply the theory to an equation that leads to a characterization of bisimulations. Power locales are introduced, as the analogue of both power domains and power spaces. Synthetic methods were developed for the preparation of several structurally diverse aromatic peptide nucleic acid (APNA) monomers containing all four natural DNA bases. This set of building blocks was useful for the preparation of oligomers designed to evaluate the hybridization properties of novel peptide nucleic acid (PNA) analogues, which incorporate aromatic rings into their backbone. Protocols for the solid-phase synthesis of APNA-PNA chimeras and APNA homopolymers were also developed. Thermal denaturation experiments involving APNA-PNA chimeras demonstrated that APNA backbones comprised of N-(2-aminomethylphenyl) glycine and N-(2-aminobenzyl) glycine as the backbone moiety exhibited good binding affinity for DNA and RNA. Here students are not encouraged to make connections between subjects or between the subjects and their own personal lives. In this positivistic view of reality teaching is reduced to technique. This thesis is a reflection on the nature and importance of a more holistic and interconnected education. Extensive research efforts are underway to generate composite coatings including carbon nanotubes (CNT) in order to improve the properties of the bulk coat. The present project concentrates on possible methods that would allow the plasma spraying of CNT-based nano-composite coatings. Various methods for producing metal-CNT composite powders for thermal plasma spraying are studied in this project. The first method discussed is based on CNT dispersion followed by an agglomeration procedure using a polymer binder. The object of this study was to investigate the scope of cognitive control over vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) performance during rotational vestibular stimulation. Human subjects, with head fixed to the body, were rotated in the dark through 20$ sp circ$ at 40$ sp circ$/s while trying to "look" at an earth-fixed target which was viewed straight ahead just before extinguishing the lights. La Rookerie de St Giles était était connu comme un bidonville irlandais au centre de Londres. Cette thèse retrace les origines du bidonville du début du XVIII-ème siecle jusqu'à sa fin présumée, au milieu du XIX- ème. À travers ces travaux, elle donne la vision d’une communauté oubliée de cinquante cinq mille ouvriers qui vivaient dans ce quartier. This thesis attempts to resuscitate the use of the much-disparaged term "problem plays" to describe Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida, All's Well That Ends Well, and Measure for Measure; three works which, I argue, share a strong and unifying thematic interest in the vexed relationship between individual sexual desire and social cohesion. Ornithine Aminotransferase (OAT) is expressed at high levels in liver, kidney, and retina. Tissue-specific regulation of OAT has been described for rat kidney and liver. To characterize OAT regulation in retinal lines, we studied OAT synthesis in retinoblastomas RB355 and Y79. OAT transcription and mRNA levels in the two lines were similar, but 3-fold greater immunoreactive OAT protein and enzyme activity were observed for Y79. Characterization of polysome-associated OAT mRNAs indicated that they were translated less efficiently, due to decreased initiation, in RB355. Over the last several years, scientific interest in the placebo effect has extended significantly in the medical literature. Understanding placebo is important to answer some important conceptual questions (e.g. the mind-body interactions) as well to optimize clinical trials' design and interpretation. Evidence based medicine relies heavily on clinical trials comparing aiming at showing the superiority of a given treatment over placebo. In fact, having a large placebo response is becoming one of the main reasons behind failed clinical trials. Dans cette dissertation, nous tenterons de décomposer la complexe étiologie du TDAH et de la réponse au traitement pharmacologique en combinant différentes approches afin d’élucider le rôle de certains gènes candidats. The high performance of bone implants depends on the positive response of osteoblasts to the surface of the materials manufactured for the implant. Cell response in turn strongly depends on the nature of the initial interaction of macromolecules involved in cell adhesion and proliferation with the atomic structure of the surface of the material used for the implant. The initial interaction between bone specific extracellular matrix proteins and the solid substrate influences cell response at the cell-implant interface. This thesis defines the role played by Mustafa Kamil in the development of the nationalist movement in Egypt. It is shown that his importance lay in having revived a spirit of patriotism among his countrymen at a time when the nationalist movement seemed to have become extinct following the British occupation of Egypt. The present thesis, for the most part, is concerned with the application of continuous optimization to the secure-economic dispatching of thermal power plants. The general concept of the continuous simulation of the optimum operation of power systems is introduced. This is the characterization of the solution trajectory of the underlying dispatching model as the loads vary along a forecasted trajectory, or as the system parameters continuously change. An efficient continuation algorithm is developed which characterizes the solution trajectory of a secure-economic dispatch model, given a piecewise linear trajectory of the bus loads, parameterized in terms of the system load.
